Jan. 6, 1899

Dr. Addie Allen died Dec. 28, 1898; born Aug. 16th, 1844 in Columbiana Co., Ohio; married Cyrus Allen for 36 years; he preceded her in death eleven months ago; burial Highland Cemetery.

Charles Fasse, living on the A. C. Baker farm 3 miles south of Milford died Jan. 4 after a short illness; born in German in 1853; survived by wife and six children.

William Haffner died Tuesday morning; funeral was Wednesday from the house.

M/M Schraag's six-month-old baby died Dec. 30, 1898 of pneumonia.



Jan. 13, 1899

M/M Frank Bomer's baby died Jan. 8th.

Clara May, age 12 years and 3 months, daughter of M/M Wm. Clifton, died Nov. 14, 1898 of typhoid; Mrs. Clifton former resident.



Jan. 20, 1899

George Kilian died Jan. 19th of pneumonia.



Jan. 27, 1899

M/M Ed Austin's four-year-old child died Jan. 18 of membraneous croup.

Elizabeth Jane Irvine age 77 died Jan. 21 at the home of her son Calvin Irvine; widow of Lt. John Irvine of the 2nd Maryland Inf.; survived by 10 sons; burial Highland Cemetery.

Minnie, the six year old daughter of M/M Isaac Saunders, died Jan. 16 of diphtheria.

Albert Kummer died Jan. 21 of apoplexy at his home northwest of the city; native of Switzerland; leaves widow and six children; burial Highland Cemetery.

Mrs. Parthena Smiley died Jan. 15 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Olesen, after a short illness; born July 18, 1816 in Davis Co., Indiana; survived by two sons, two daughters and several grandchildren.

The infant son of M/M John Tritle died Jan. 21; funeral from the residence north of the reservation.



Feb. 3, 1899

Mrs. Margaret Butler, age 90; died Feb. 2 at her brother's, Mr. Pat Kennedy; widow of William Butler who died in 1883; burial today at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Mrs. Elizabeth Childs, mother of S. Grant Hoyt, died Jan. 30th of lagrippe; funeral Feb. 2 at Highland Cemetery.

Laverne King, aged 23, youngest son of M/M George W. King of Abilene, died Jan. 23 of typhoid fever; burial Indian Hill cemetery.

The five month old twin son of M/M Leithoff, near Milford, died Wednesday.

Mrs. Sam Orr, who has recently made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Norton, in Illinois, died there this week; she was the mother of Mrs. Blakely of this city, and one of its oldest residents; Mr. Sam Orr also lives here.

Mrs. William Osterhaus, age 44, died last night at her home four and a half miles southwest of the city, of pneumonia; leaves six sons and four daughters; burial Wreford.

Mr. S. Verbruegge, died on the 27th of pneumonia.



Feb. 11, 1899

Mr. C. D. Childs died Feb. 9 of lagrippe; his wife died last week.

Frank Cramer died Jan. 31 at Galesburg of heart failure; only son of Conrad J. and Harriet C. Cramer of Skiddy; also survived by a sister; burial Skiddy.

Mrs. Lee Dowdell died last week at her home in the north part of the city; leaves a husband and three or four children.

Mrs. Sarah Eldridge died Feb. 4 from the effects of a fall; born in New York on Dec. 6, 1829; 21 years later married Henry Eldridge who died 25 years later from exposure in the army; she was prominent in literary, charity and educational circle; survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Irma Eldridge Milton of South Dakota, and a sister, Mrs. L. M. Greeno; a brother Maj. Pirge Smith died at the age of 24.

Mrs. Katherine Elliott, age 70, died Feb. 8; sister of Jim Richardson.

Charles S. Lee, age 47, died Sunday night of pneumonia; born in Vermont; leaves a wife and one daughter.

Alma Lacy, aged five years, died of brain fever on the 2nd.



Feb. 17, 1899

Mrs. Betsey M. Linscott died Feb. 4; born Betsey Maria Trafton on April 18, 1813 in Shapliegh, Maine; married Rev. H. L. Linscott in 1834; mother of Sarah, who died 14 years ago, William Henry Linscott of Gentry, Arkansas and Hon. M. C. Linscott of this place; services and burial at Milford.

Mrs. Sam Cookson died Feb. 12 at her farm home four miles east and one north of Alida; burial at Highland Cemetery.

The 13-days-old daughter of M/M John Snyder died on the 13th.

John Harrington, age 80 years, died at the home of Nels Kelley, near Weston, on the 13th.

Mr. Forney, the brother in law of J. H. Winner, died at his Canton, Ohio home last week.

Sherman Harding, formerly of JC, was killed Feb. 5 in the Battle of Manila; son of Mrs. J. E. Howells and grandson of Mr. J. G. McCauthron of this place; member of Co. I, 2nd Batt., 1st Washington Vols.

Charles Tozier died Feb. 11 at his home on West Fifth St.; born Northumberland county, New Brunswick in 1827; moved to Maine as a boy where he grew to manhood; then to Wisconsin and in 1856, Kansas Falls; fought the border ruffians and at the outbreak of war enlisted in the 2nd Kans. Inf. and then 2nd Kans. Cav.; mustered out as first lieutenant; married Miss Gilbert in 1871; she died three years ago; survived by four children, two of whom, David and Will, are now serving at Manila as noncommissioned officers in the 20th Kans.; also a son George and a daughter, Miss Jessie funeral was Monday.



Feb. 24, 1899

M/M Frank Anderson's 10-months-old son died the 23rd.

Samuel Berry died Feb. 2 at his home in Manhattan; he was born in Juniata County, Pa., the son of Joseph Berry; married Miss Nancy Pollock on Nov. 9, 1854; they were the parents of three children, one of whom, John, resides near Shady Bend, Kans.; settled on Humboldt Creek in 1855; served three years in the Civil War; moved to his Lincoln County farm, in Elkhorn Twp., where he lived until the fall of 1898; after the death of his first wife on March 12, 1893 he married Stella Hecker of Lincoln; Mr. Berry was one of a family of ten children--two brothers and three sisters survive him.

Mrs. Robert Cairns, 63 years, died Feb. 15 at her home, of heart trouble and dropsy; survived by husband and twelve children; funeral from the Bethel church.

Johnny Herington died last week at the home of Nelson Kelly and was laid to rest in the cemetery in the Schmedemann district on Humboldt Creek; he was almost eighty years old.

Joseph Starling died the 21st of paralysis; funeral today at Madura cemetery near Wakefield.

Mary A. O'Donovan died Feb. 21 at her home in JC of lagrippe; born January 16, 1855 in Cincinnati, Ohio; family homesteaded on McDowell Creek on Sept. 19, 1857; her father died 16 years ago; a year ago moved from the farm to a home at 7th and Franklin; burial Catholic cemetery on McDowell Creek.

Teresa Agatha Doyle was killed Feb. 21 in an apartment fire in Chicago in attempting to jump from her window; she was the daughter of Joseph Doyle of Skiddy, and was born Jan. 12, 1867 in Douglastown, Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada; as an infant she came with her parents to a farm one mile south of Skiddy, where her parents still reside; she was employed in KC for several years and last year moved to Chicago to take a position with Burnham & Kellehar as finisher of fancy ball dresses; her brother, James, has gone to Chicago to bring the body back to JC for burial at St. Mary's Cemetery.



March 3, 1899

J. A. "Jack" Rimer, former resident died on Feb. 22 in Hooper, Colorado; his parents reside in Ohio.



March 10, 1899

James Louderbach died Wednesday (the 8th) at the old City Hotel; he leaves a wife.

The 21 months old baby girl of M/M Robert Briggs died Wednesday.

Private John T. McCormick, a member of the 12th Inf., died at the Post hospital last Thursday morning (March 2) of pneumonia, which he contracted in Cuba; leaves a wife and two little daughters; burial at Ft. Riley.

Mr. Moshe, recently taken to the asylum at Osawatomie, died there this (?) morning.

Col. Newell Greene died Saturday (the 4th) at his home; Newell Franklin Greene was born in Washington county, Indiana in 1833; his parents were natives of North Carolina; at age 23 he and a group of others came to Ashland; there he married Miss Marcia Elvira Woodward, the couple returning to Indiana where he engaged in merchandising and real estate; he returned to Kansas in 1870 with his wife and four children, making his home at the townsite of Ashland, which he helped found; after four years there, he moved to Junction City where he continued his success in business and real estate; survived by his wife and children: Paul Edward of Muncie, Ind.; Don of KC, Mo.; Frank in KC, Kans.; Gord, Charlie and Fred of JC; and Miss Inez, who teaches at the Territorial Normal School at Edmond, OK.

William H. Seymour died Feb. 28 after an illness of several days; he was born June 28, 1827 in Sodus, Wayne county, Indiana; married Miss Hannah Sedore at Lyons, New York, in December, 1860; came to Manhattan, Kans. in 1879; on July 20, 1884 their only son died of drowning at Manhattan at the age of 19 years; shortly after they came to JC where they have since resided; survived by his wife and daughter, Mrs. William H. Mackey, Jr.; burial Highland cemetery.



March 17, 1899

Miss Frances Amelia Austin died March 10 in Detroit, Mich.; she was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, where she had been residing; she was the daughter of the late Joshua Austin, and sister of Edward and Wallace Austin; an aunt, Mrs. Judge Nikirk of JC survives.

Mrs. Jacob Saurs died Monday; her nephew, Rev. H. W. Scott of Ottawa came to preach her funeral.



March 24, 1899

Thomas Dixon, Sr., died March 19th in JC; born in Killamagh parish, County Mayo, Ireland, on Sept. 8, 1831, the third son of a family of six sons and one daughter; named for his father; came to this country in 1849 with his parents, brother Jeremiah and sister Bridget to join his brother James in Fairmount, Va.; subsequently two other brothers, John and Patrick, joined the family; the brothers came to Kansas in 1854 settling near Ft. Riley; Thomas married Miss Mary Hoff on May 1, 1856 in Riley county; survived by his wife and nine children: John T., Thomas P., Charles, Cosmas, George A., Josie (Sister Mary Ursula), Ella, Mary Louise and Julia; one of the largest funerals JC has seen was held at the Catholic church on and burial was in St. Mary's cemetery, near the graves of his brothers, John, James and Patrick.

Mr. Sweiboldt, who was taken to the asylum at Osawatomie about two weeks ago with Mr. Moske, died there this morning.

Mrs. Harriet Blades and Mrs. H. T. Kirby today received word of the death of their sister in law in England.

Clarence Whitehair died March 14th of consumption in Chapman.

Grandpa Price, aged 84, died of the measles on the 15th in Chapman.

Mrs. Hannah Hansen, mother of Mrs. J. L. Carstensen, died March 21 at the home of Nick Erickson on Clark's Creek; she was 76 years old and died of pneumonia.

The 2-months-old son of M/M H. Zurmely, of near Alida, died on the 16th; burial St. Mary's cemetery.



March 31, 1899

William Solander, an aged gentleman who lived at Washington and 12th street, died on the 25th; burial was Monday at Highland.

Mrs. Elizabeth Hauserman, wife of Fred Hauserman, died at the farm home on Davis creek on the 28th; burial from the German Methodist cemetery on Davis creek.



April 7, 1899

Mrs. George Devinney was found dead in her chair by her husband on Sunday, April 2, when he returned from church; Margaret Devinney was born Oct. 10, 1834 in Franklin county, Pa.; she married George W. Divinney on March 18, 1857; she was one of six children, four of whom survive, including a brother, John Wallace of Humboldt (city or creek?); she also leaves a husband and seven children; resident on Humboldt creek for many years.

Little Mildred Shellhaas, only child of M/M John Shellhaas, died Easter morning; she was born June 27, 1896; burial Highland cemetery.

A brother of Mr. John Graham died at Grenada, Colorado last week.



April 14, 1899

Mrs. Laura Russell died last week in Oskaloosa, Missouri, and the remains were shipped to JC for burial; she was the daughter of M/M W. W. Parker of this city and her death was cause by lagrippe complicated by pneumonia.

Lloyd Tufts, 16 year old son of M/M John Tufts of JC died at St. Marys on Wednesday, April 12, from injuries suffered the previous day, when attempting to board a moving train, he fell and was thrown under the wheels; he was at the time working with Capt. Wright's railroad gang and was trying to catch a ride back to camp.



April 21, 1899

Blanche, 8 year old daughter of Joseph Baab, was killed near Wakefield on Sunday, from the effects of a runaway.

Hosea Bunch, son of M/M C. C. Bunch died April 14th of consumption, aged 19 years, one month and two days; services were Sunday from the home west of the city.



April 28, 1899

Reuben Emick died the 19th at (?) and his body was accompanied to this city by Capt. John K. Wright; he was formerly a businessman of this place.

Henry Johnson was killed April 14th near Burlington, Kans., when he slipped while unloading telegraph poles from a Katy freight train; the train started moving and he fell between the cars, killing him instantly; he was 25 years old and unmarried; body taken to Skiddy for burial.

Charles Christie Read/Reade was born in JC in 1896 to J. W. and Lottie Read; died at the home of R. C. Irvine on April 24, 1899, aged two years and eight months; father is on his way to Manila and does not know of his son's death or the illness of his other children; burial in Highland.

The baby son of Mrs. Ollie Rhodes, who died east of here a short time ago, was given to the charge of Mrs. Rhodes' mother, Mrs. Henry Snell.



May 5, 1899

Miss Jerusha McCathron died at the residence of her brother, J. G. McCathron, on April 17, aged 81 years, 4 months and 14 days; she was born in Washington county, New York, where she resided until seven years ago, removing to her brother's home in JC.

Mrs. Sarah McClellan, wife of Chas. McClellan, died April 27; burial was Saturday at Ashland.



May 12, 1899

Ross Pickens, seven year old son of J. Q. and Angie Pickens, died May 9th of pleural pneumonia; burial in Lawrence; 13 months to a day the Pickens lost another child to same disease.



May 19, 1899

M/M John Blaker's little two and half year old daughter died May 18th; funeral will be Saturday.

Johnnie, the little son of M/M J. A. Cox died May 12th; burial Highland.



May 26, 1899

Little Raymond, son of M/M E. J. Pritchett, died May 21st; he would have been a year old on May 29th; death due to measles complicated by pneumonia; burial Highland.

Fred William Asmussen, son of M/M Henry Asmussen of Clarks Creek, died May 20 of spinal meningitis, aged two years and nine months.

Emma Koepcke, age 18 years, died May 20th at her home at Davis creek of lung trouble; burial in the Lutheran cemetery at Clark's creek.

Mrs. Emma May Sunday died May 16th at her home, of consumption; Emma May Lawhead was born May 18, 1870 near Seymour, Jackson county, Ind.; married Charles V. Sunday near Hays Center, Neb., on Oct. 21, 1888; also survived by a seven year old daughter, Vernie Ethel; her brother, Frank Lawhead came up from Texas for the funeral; burial Highland.



June 2, 1899

Mrs. Mary Cameron, wife of Jack Cameron, died May 26th at her home on McDowell creek; daughter of M/M David Criswell of Antelope, Liberty twp.; survived by two children, a girl age five years and a baby only a few weeks old; burial in the cemetery on Humboldt near the Harris school house.

Mrs. Emma Cox died June 1 at their home at First and Jefferson, of fever; she leaves a family of six girls; burial Highland.

Mrs. Rose Klussner Clark, sister of Mrs. L. W. Oesterhaus of JC, died May 27th at her home in Kansas City; survived by husband and infant daughter; burial Holton, Kans.



June 9, 1899

August Foerschler, Sr. died June 6th at his home near the Reynolds school house on Humboldt creek; the remains will be accompanied by his wife and son August for burial; his sons George and Will earlier this week went back to their homes in Montana, feeling their father was somewhat better.

Beulah, daughter of M/M E. J. Gemeny, died June 7th at her home on East Fifthteenth; suffered from cancer of the shoulder.



June 16, 1899

James Crowe of Davis creek died June 13th; about eighty years old; burial St. Mary's cemetery.

Mrs. Dorothea Heidel, wife of Louis Heidel, died June 8th of dropsy; burial was in the Clarks Creek German Lutheran cemetery.

Mrs. Mable Phipps, aged 25 years, died in Kansas City on June 2; survived by her husband and two children; burial was on Sunday in the cemetery near Zion church in Dickinson county.



June 23, 1899

Elizabeth, the two year old daughter of M/M Alexander Dumbreck died June 18th of cholera infantum.

Mrs. Alwina Eulert, wife of Fred Eulert, died June 20th at her home on Clarks creek of septicemia; burial was Wednesday in the Lutheran cemetery on Clarks creek; coming from out of town for the funeral were her parents, M/M Marhenke of Eureka, and a sister Mrs. William Roeder of Palmer.

Frank Willoughby, aged 58 years, died June 20; burial was yesterday morning in Highland.

Mr. Talbott, colored, was found dead June 18th near Skiddy; he was an inmate at the Morris County farm; burial in the Skiddy cemetery.

The fifteen year old son of William Soutter died in Colorado of spinal meningitis; his uncle, J. A. Marrs accompanied the body to JC, arriving here Monday night.

Mr. Karmon, who lived nine miles north, lost his five year old child last week.



June 30, 1899

Charles, eight months old son of M/M Henry Devinney of Humboldt creek, died June 28th of bowel derangement.

Richard, little son of M/M Jack Taylor, died June 23rd; he was born May 8, 1898; funeral and burial was Sunday at Highland.



July 7, 1899

Harlan G. Allen died June 14th at his home in Lincoln, Kans.; born Dec. 11, 1844 in Donville, New Hampshire; formerly a resident of JC; survived by a wife.

Alphie Harris died July 1 and was buried at Greenridge cemetery in Dickinson county; he leaves a wife, the daughter of M/M R. Wilmer, a widowed mother, a brother and a sister.

Mrs. Sarah J. Jones, wife of Daniel Jones, living about ten miles south of the city, died June 30th of paralysis; aged about 63 years; burial High Point cemetery.

Noble G. Rhodes, brother of Mrs. W. C. Moore of JC, died June 30th in Cuba of yellow fever; he had recently finished dental school and set up practice in St. Louis, but the military spirit caught him and he wanted a commission.

Harrison Wade, the seven year old son of Charles Wade (colored) was drowned Sunday, July 2, in the Smoky river near the foot of First street. [note: later reports said the body was found a week later and buried at Highland.)



July 14, 1899

George Stephens, aged 82 years, died July 13 at his home two miles west of the city; resident for 30 years and member of the G.A.R.



July 21, 1899

Mrs. Thomas Canavan learned of the sudden death of her brother, Engineer Mike McCune at Parsons; he was scalded to death; his wife had died about nine months earlier, and he leaves four grown sons and a 16 year old daughter.

Edgar Knight, the 11 year old son of Henry Knight of Chapman, drowned July 14 in the Smoky; the body was recovered the next day; funeral from the Congregational church at Chapman.

The infant child of Jack and the late Mary Cameron died of stomach trouble; relatives had taken the baby to raise after the death of its mother.

Spring Creek--the little daughter of M/M Haag died July 14th.

Anna Rinell, wife of Rev. Rinell of the Swedish Lutheran church, died July 15th after a long illness; burial in Marion Hill cemetery.



July 28, 1899

Steward Gumness, son in law of John Holmgren, died of yellow fever in Cuba.

Artie, the eight year old son of Gottlieb Sautter, living west of Alida, died the 24th from the effects of getting his leg caught up in the wheel of a moving buggy the previous day.

Eva Belle, daughter of A. D. and Lottie M. Limbocker of Ogden, died July 23rd of stomach trouble, aged 22 months and eight days.



August 4, 1899

William Oliver died by his own hand on Aug. 1, at the Depot hotel; he left a note addressed to his sister, Mrs. J. H. Heffer explaining his actions; he had been married only a week before to a Miss Pollie Cushmeyer; she and his brother Tom B. Oliver attended the funeral on Wednesday; Tom's wife, the former Rosana Garland, whom he deserted some years ago, also lives in JC.

Fred G. Hall died July 28th of paralysis of the bowels; born in Troy, NY on June 10, 1849, son of Aaron S. and Emma W. Blakely Hall; nephew of William S. Blakely; came to Kansas at age 17; married Miss Hattie Lorena Dennis and to them were born two boys and a girl; those from out of town attending the funeral were Fred's mother and sister, Mrs. F. Thomas, from New York; Mrs. Fred Hall's mother from Denver and Mrs. W. S. Blakely from Lawrence; a younger brother of Fred's, who lives in Chicago, did not receive word in time to come; the widow expects to return to Denver with her mother.



August 11, 1899

Died at her home one half mile from Willow Spring, Mo., on July 28, 1899, Mrs. William Clark; the Clarks were in charge of the Geary County farm for many years.



August 18, 1899

Pearl, only child of Barneum and Mary Spears, died August 13th at the family home in Ogden; aged one year, three months and twenty five days.

Mrs. Emma Lichtenhahn, aged 63 years, died on the 30th at her home west of the city of cancer.

Anna Ottilie Haffner Hermann was born July 30, 1872 near Manhattan, Kans., died August 13, 1899 at Culbertson, Neb.; survived by husband, Matthew Hermann and two children.

Bennie, infant son of M/M Robert Hay, died at 2:00 this afternoon.

Mrs. Louis Krugar, who has been here visiting her parents, M/M August Roediger, was called home to Denver today by the death of her father in law.

The infant son of M/M S. L. Andrew of Weston died recently.



August 25, 1899

Miss Mary Milly, sister of Miss Harriet L. Milly died suddenly Aug. 22; it was planned that she would be operated on for a tumor, and was going to leave today for surgery.

G. B. Smith died on the 19th at his home on the Kregar farm south of the Fogerty mill, of old age; he recently came from his own farm near Detroit to lived with his son, Frank E. Smith; also survived by his wife and a son in St. Louis.

Dorothy, little daughter of James and Hattie White died Aug. 21 at the family home on east 17th street; aged 14 months; burial at Ogden.



Sept. 1, 1899

The infant of M/M L. E. Baldwin died Aug. 27 at the age of 18 days; Mr. Baldwin is the son in law of Conrad Schmidt.

Eva, the 14 year old daughter of Charles Matson, died on Aug. 25 of dropsy.

Stephen M. Hoyt, father of S. Grant Hoyt, died Aug. 25th; born September 28, 1813, at Warwick, Osage county, N.Y.; cause of death, Bright's disease;



Sept. 8, 1899

Henry Albro died Sept. 3 of Bright's disease, with a heart complication; he was 77 years of age.

J. H. McFarland died on the 1st of heart failure; James Horace McFarland was born Aug. 26, 1821 in Weston, Massachusetts; married Miss Charlotte Felton Cleveland in New Salem, Massachusetts on May 29, 1850; came to Kansas with his brother E. F. McFarland in 1857; in 1858 he brought his wife to their new log cabin home in Logan Grove, and built a new home the next year, where the couple has lived for 40 years; also survived by a son, Horace E. McFarland of St. Louis.

On Friday of last week the remains of the 11 weeks old daughter of Fred and the late Alwine Eulert were laid to rest in the Lutheran cemetery at Clarks creek; the infant was being cared for by Mrs. Henry Eulert, and was doing well, but died after an illness of two days.



Sept. 15, 1899

Little Maggie, 18 months old baby of M/M T.O. Brott, died Sept. 9th

William F. Brewer died Sept. 12 of consumption at his home at 8th and Madison; burial at Ogden.

Andrew Languein died Sept. 9th at his home on West Tenth street, of lockjaw; born 1821 near Montreal, Canada; came to Kansas in 1860; lived on a farm on Clarks creek for many years, spending the remainder of his life in JC; he leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his loss; burial St. Mary's cemetery.

Jack Wright died Sept. 8 in JC; an organizer of the Presbyterian church here; served in the 5th cavalry and also Co. M, 2nd Colorado.

Daniel Edmond Shane died Sept. 7th at Osawatomie; he graduated from JC High School and studied pharmacy at the University in Lawrence, graduating in the class of '89; he was buried from the home of his parents, M/M W. L. V. Shane; out of town family members attending the funeral included his sister, Mrs. J. L. Eaches of Burlington, Colo., and brother, W. T. Shane of Arkansas City.

Lucy A. Smith died Sept. 9th at Skiddy; burial at White City, next to her husband.

Will Reynolds died of typhoid on Sept. 5 at the home of his aunt, Miss Parkinson, on College Hill.



Sept. 22, 1899

J. Collins "Collie" Blakely died at Elsinore, Sevier county, Utah, Sept. 7, 1899 of blood poisoning; he was about 50 years old and a veteran; formerly lived on Clarks creek on the Eagan farm; married on July 27, 1880, Mary J. Bland, daughter of Joseph Bland; Mr. Blakely was a brother of Will Bland, and uncle of Fred G. Hall, who died recently; survived by his wife, four sons and three daughters, the oldest of whom is 18 years.

Will Compton died the 16th of an abcess of the lung, at his home near Wreford.

Claus Garranson of Briggs died the 14th after an illness of four months; one of the early settlers on McDowell; leaves a wife and eight children.

Mrs. Maria Morgan, of Stroud, Oklahoma, died Sept. 13th of heart failure; her husband, J. B. Morgan, died two months ago; it was just a year ago that they made a visit to their brother and sister, M/M J. P. Estes of Briggs

Mrs. William Soutter died Sept 15th at her home in JC of quick consumption; she was formerly Mrs. O'Keefe; burial was Sunday in Highland.

Cpl. Tom Olesen of Co. G, 1st Wyoming Volunteer regiment, died recently at Nagasaki, Japan, while on his way home from Manila of dysentery; he left this place about two years ago for Wyoming; his mother, brothers and sisters reside at the old home on Davis creek.

The little baby of M/M Philip Smith died Sept. 16th at Enterprise, and was brought to the home of its grandmother, Mrs. Murphy, on Fourteenth and Clay street; it was laid to rest in Highland.

The infant child of M/M J. R. Dalton died the 15th. "We extend many thanks to our neighbors and friends for the kindness shown to us during the sickness and death of our baby." Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Dalton

The infant son of M/M W. C. Calkins died the 24th

The mother of our townsmen, Jerre and Dan Hurley, died Sept. 26th in Galveston, Texas. Two daughters reside in Galveston, where Mrs. Hurley moved to last December.

Died, at Milford, Frances Belle, daughter of M/M Frank L. Seeley, on Sept. 23rd (another item said 24th), age five months and eighteen days.

Matthew Hammond died the 25th at the home of his son, Ed, here in JC; he was born May 30, 1833 at Clyde, NY; as a boy the family moved to Will County, Illinois where he married Nancy Stitt on Dec. 15, 1854; they had seven children, four surviving: Scott of Joliet, Ill., Albert and Oscar of Kansas City and Ed of JC; came to Kansas in 1877 and JC in 1884; his wife died Feb. 1, 1895; he suffered from bleeding of the lungs and pleurisy.

The infant child of Elmer Hoffman died Sept. 25th at the family home in Navarre; death due to cholera infantum.



Oct. 6, 1899

Mary Ethel, infant of M/M J. A. Putney, died September 29th of bowel trouble after an illness of three weeks; funeral the next day.

The mother of George Young died Sept. 22 at her home in Purdy, Tennessee, of old age.



Oct. 13, 1899

M/M Ed Hunt's four month old child died the 8th.

Mrs. Charles Kaufholz, age 27 years, died Oct. 9th after an illness of a few months; maiden name, Jennie Olson; leaves a husband and six year old daughter.

Mrs. Elizabeth Schnider, at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Fred Osward, west of the city died on the 11th of old age; she is the mother of Mrs. Jacob Disberger; mother of four children in Kansas and two in Ohio; funeral in Chapman.

Mrs. J. F. Streeter died Oct. 7th of heart failure; her daughters, Mrs. J. C. H. Lee, Mrs. Stuart D. Walling of Denver and Mrs. George Landers of West Point, New York were by her side; Josephine Fredonia Whittaker was born Sept. 17, 1839 near Columbia, Tennessee, the second daughter of Mack B. and Harriet Holt Whittaker; her mother died when she was four years old; she married John N. Hodges on on Sept. 4th, 1859 and the couple removed to Mississippi, near Aberdeen; Mr. Hodges died in December, 1863 leaving the widow with two young daughters, Sarah Katharine and John Clifford, named for the father she never knew; within three months Mrs. Hodges lost her father and two nephews, and her oldest brother stricken with paralysis; in 1868 James Streeter married Mrs. Hodges and brought her to JC, where her daughter Jean, now Mrs. Capt. Landers, was born; Mr. Streeter died in 1883; she is also survived by her grandchildren, Katharine, Clifford and Josephine Lee.



Oct. 20, 1899

Mrs. Emma Brady died at St. Margaret's hospital in KC on the 14th after an operation for cancer; she was 59 years of age and leaves a husband and two children; funeral at Chapman.

Mrs. Edith Letord, eldest daughter of M/M Louis Hauserman, died in Havana, Cuba, on Oct. 17th of yellow fever; Mrs. Letord had joined her husband, a government clerk in the War Department at Havana.



Oct. 27, 1899

Hugh S. Wallace died Oct. 21 in Omaha; the report said he was suffocated by gas; he was born in Coles County, Ill., and came to Kansas with his parents, M/M John Wallace, in 1855.

Dr. Henry Thomas, age 68 years, a highly respected citizen of Dickinson County, died Oct. 22 at his home near Upland; he had just returned from a visit to Oklahoma on the 18th; leaves a wife, son and daughter; services from the Zion Methodist church.

The infant daughter of M/M Frank Ford died Oct. 24, aged two months and thirteen days.



Nov. 3, 1899

Mrs. J. R. Allen died Oct. 28th at the Bartell House; she had been sick since January with consumption; she was a daughter of Gov. Boone; she leaves a husband, a daughter 13 years old and a son 2 1/2 years old; her sister, Mrs. F. D. Johnson of Stillman Valley, Illinois, Mrs. George Hovey of Horton and Mrs. W. H. Smith, a sister of Mr. Allen, of Marysville, were here to attend the funeral; burial at Marysville.

The six year old daughter of Mrs. Bessie Pratt died Oct. 26th.



Nov. 10, 1899

Harry Sparling, son in law of M/M James Loader of Gill twp., died Oct. 22 at his home in Eskridge from injuries suffered after falling from a horse.



Nov. 17, 1899

T. H. Good died Nov. 16th of Bright's disease; he was 78 years of age.

Mr. John Rufer died Nov. 15 of heart failure; he was a conductor on the Union Pacific, running up the Fort Kearny branch; leaves a wife and small family.

Willie, the infant son of M/M John Sherraden died Nov. 7 and was buried in the Rinehart Cemetery; he was their only child.



Nov. 24, 1899

Mrs. Mary Brunswick died Nov. 21 at her home on Clarks creek, aged 70 years; burial in the Clarks creek cemetery.

Mrs. Anna L. Daugherty died Nov. 17th at the home of her son, William F. Daugherty, in JC; she was 49 years and four months old at the time of her death; formerly lived in Philadelphia; her son is a sergeant in the Sixth Cavalry band at Fort Riley; burial Fort Riley cemetery.

Mrs. Betty Johnson died at Henry Stillwagen's on the 15th, aged 73 years; she is survived by four sons and one daughter; she was a member of the Dunkard church and her remains were laid to rest in the cemetery east of the church school house.

Mrs. Rhoda E. Lee died Nov. 19th at her residence in Abilene; she was born April 26th, 1857, in West Union, Iowa, the youngest child of L. C. and Laura Noble; came to JC in 1877 with her parents; married J. H. Lee on June 18, 1880 and to this union were born five children



Dec. 1, 1899

Mary Marguerite, daughter of M/M George M. Thompson, died on the 24th at the age of 1 year, 5 months and 9 days; burial in Highland Cemetery.



Dec. 8, 1899

Died, Nov. 30th at his home on Upper Humboldt creek, Herman Heintz; survived by wife and eight children; burial in the Lutheran cemetery on Clark's creek.

Mrs. W. L. V. Shane died Dec. 1 in the yard of her residence on First street; death due to apoplexy; she and her husband were among the first to come to JC; awaiting arrival of her son from Sterling, Kans. and her daughter from Burlington, Kans.; another daughter survives and the only relative in the area is Johnie Brannick on McDowell creek.

Dr. and Mrs. J. Sol Smith of Denver lost their four year old daughter on the 29th of November to scarlet fever; a boy of fourteen is their only child left.

Dr. F. Vogl died Dec. 3 of an enlarged heart; aged about 61 years.



Dec. 15, 1899

Mrs. Bridget Gleason died on the 12th of old age.



Dec. 22, 1899

Mrs. Burd of Clark's creek received the sad news of her sister in England.

H. W. Fairbank died Dec. 14, aged 39 years, at Lonesome Hollow; leaves a wife and three small boys' burial in Riley cemetery.

Mrs. Reading died Dec. 18th; funeral services were from the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Clark and were conducted by V. Wetzel of Riley.

The death of Mrs. W. H. Sanders' mother called her to Sylvan Grove, Kans.



Dec. 29, 1899

Mrs. L. M. Farlow died Dec. 26th of consumption at her home on south Washington street; her husband was on the range in New Mexico and was called back to JC on account of her severe illness.

Mr. E. B. Fullington died on Christmas Day in Milford twp.; among those attending the funeral were George and Forest Fullington, his nephews; Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Whiting of Topeka; John Carpenter, a brother of Mrs. Fullington, and his daughter, Mrs. Drury; G. A. Streeter of JC.

James B. Long, who was injured almost a month ago by falling from an electric light pole, died Dec. 24th of his injuries; he was born Jan. 2, 1862 in Pennsylvania; at age 3 accompanied his parents to Gretna, Neb., where he married Miss Della Thompson on March 5, 1893 his body was accompanied to Plattsmouth, Nebraska, his former home, by his wife and little son, for interment next to a little daughter who preceded him in death.

The remains of Miss Ella Pearson, a sister of Mrs. Will York, were taken to the home on Davis creek for burial.
