Widow of John M. Smith, Pvt. Co. H, 89th IN VOL


John M. Smith mustered in Aug. 28, 1862 at Indianapolis, Indiana, as a private into Co. H, 89th Indiana Volunteers

John M. Smith killed May 7, 1864 in the Battle of Bayou Murray, Moore, Louisiana. Surgeon General stated he was "shot in the bowels and died almost instantly."

John Minor Smith and Mrs. Jemima Chaney were married July 26, 1849 in Guernsey Co., Ohio.

Children of John M. and Jemima Smith living and under the age of 16 years at the time of soldier's death:
Jacob A. Smith, born Aug. 10, 1850
Benjamin F. Smith, born April 30, 1853, in Van Wert Co., Ohio
James L. F. Smith, born Sept. 16, 1855, in Appanoose Co., Iowa

Jemima Smith, Certificate #35069, admitted to pension rolls Nov. 28th, 1864 at the rate of $8 per months, commencing from May 7th, 1864; an additional $2 per month for each child under the age of 16 commencing July 25, 1866. At this time she was a resident of Decatur, Indiana.

Affidavit of Benjamin F. Smith and James L. F. Smith state that their mother, Jemima Smith, had exclusively been a resident of Kansas since Oct. 25, 1879. Affidavit signed March 4, 1880, Davis Co., Kansas

Jemima Smith dropped from rolls on account of her death which occurred May 24, 1904 at Junction City, Kansas. She was last paid May 4, 1904 at the rate of $12 per month.
