Junction City Business Guide
Goodwin's Pacific Railway Business Guide & Gazetteer of Missouri and Kansas, 1867-1868

Junction City was laid out in 1858. The original stockholders were J. R. McClure, Robert Wilson, P. Z. Taylor, John T. Price, Daniel Mitchell and F. N. Blake. It was at that time in Riley county, but the lines were subsequently changed, which resulted in its becoming the county seat of Davis county. The U. S. Land Office was immediately moved from Ogden to this point. The town grew rapidly during 1859 and 60, but war caused a suspension. Its improvement during 1866, as well as its promises for the future, are unprecedented. The town is built upon a beautiful piece of table land, at the confluence of the Smoky Hill and Republican rivers, and three miles west of Fort Riley. To the east are the lowlands of the Smoky Hill bottom, and to the west are the gently rising bluffs, which furnish a fine quality and inexhaustable supply of white magnesian limestone, a substance of much service in the adornment of the town. Its location possesses many natural advantages, which induce to the belief that it will be one of the most important points between the Missouri river and the Rocky mountains, on the Kansas branch of the Pacific road. The U. P. Railway, E. D., was completed to this point in November 1866, and it is at present and will continue to be, until the extension of the road to the terminus. At this point the U. P. Railway, Southern Branch, will intersect with the Eastern Division. The Southern Branch already has franchises sufficient to insure its construction and a bill is now pending in Congress providing for an extension of them via the Republican Valley to a junction with the main trunk at Fort Kearney. Coaches leave this point for the gold regions and other points in the mountains. About six thousand acres of beautiful prairie and bottom land, recently forming a part of the Fort Riley Military Reserve, have been donated by Congress to the State of Kansas, for the purpose of building a bridge across the Republican river. The Legislature placed said land in the control of the Republican River Bridge Company, who propose immediately commencing the construction of a first-class and costly bridge. The Junction City and Smoky Hill Bridge Company are at work constructing a bridge across the Smoky Hill, at a cost of $18,000. The County Commissioners are also building a bridge at an expense of $20,000. The population of the town is estimated at from 1,500 to 2,000. Its people are active and energetic, and much business is done. A large and beautiful stone school-house sits on an eminence to the southwest of the town; the Baptists have a neat and commodious place of worship; the Methodists and Episcopalians are finishing buildings.
