DOUGLAS COUNTY.
This county immediately adjoins Johnson on the west, and thus it will
be seen is in the second tier west of the State line, it also adjoins the Kansas
river on the north; and on that side is bounded by the counties of Jefferson
and Leavenworth, on the east by Johnson, on the south by Franklin, and on
the west by Osage and Shawnee; it 1ms a length from north to south of twenty-two miles; and from east to west of twenty-four miles. Lawrence is the
County Seat, and is situated in the northern part of the county, on the Kansas river. The county is well watered by the Waukarusa creek and five of
its principal branches, which flow from the south to the north, and are thence
emptied into the Kansas river. The county will be bisected by the Leavenworth, Lawrence and Galveston R. R.. It has the nine following townships:
Clinton, Eudora, Kanwaca, Lawrence, Lecompton, Marion, Palmyra, Waukarusa and the Willow Springs, and is one of the most important counties in
the State, having a population of at least 16,000.

This is the name of a village in
Douglas county, between 30 and 40
miles west of Kansas City. It contains a population of about 320.

This town is near the north-east
corner of Douglas county, and about
three miles south of the Kansas river
and nine east of Lawrence, the County Seat. This is a very beautiful and
fertile section of country, with both
timber and good water. The town
has grown and become thrifty and enterprising, and as the surrounding
parts are favorable, the place will
continue to grow and improve. It
now has a population of about 400

This is the name of a place on the
Waukarusa creek, in Douglas county
81 miles south of east of Lawrence,
the County Seat, and is in the midst
of a well timbered district, and contains a saw mill and post office.

This place, which is memorable in
the annals of Kansas, is the County
Seat of Douglas county, situated on
the south side of the Kansas river, 25
miles east of Topeka, the State Capital, by land, but some 34 by the river
and railroad. It has communication
with the east by the way of the Union
Pacific R. K., E. D. The town is situated pleasantly and has a thriving
and business population. It is surrounded by an excellent section of
country, and is destined to become
still more than it now is, a metropolis
of no inconsiderable importance; it
now has a population of 5,000, and is
steadily on the increase.

This town is situated in the north
part of Douglas county on the south
side of the Kaw or Kansas river, 9
miles above Lawrence by land, but
about twice that distance by the river
or railroad. It is near the north-west corner of the county, and has
quite an enterprising population. The
country is very pleasant and the scenery beautiful. Population 460.

This a small place in the west part
Douglas county, 15 miles south-west
of Lawrence, the County Seat, and is
situated on the old Independence and
Santa Fe road. There are two fine
creeks, one each on the west and east
of the place, which flow to the north
into the Waukarusa creek. Population, 80.
