First a Little History
The first election was held February 1880. There were 6 precincts set up for the election. They were Grant, Beaver, Bassettville, Oberlin, Prairie Dog and Jennings. See Original Township Map. The election was held to choose location of the county seat, 1 representative, 1 county attorney, 1 sheriff, 1 county clerk, 1 county treasurer, 1 probate judge, 1 clerk of the district court, 1 register of deeds, 1 county superintendent of public instruction, 1 county surveyor, 1 coroner and 3 county commissioners. Each of the townships would elect: 2 justices of the peace, 2 constables, 1 township trustee, 1 township clerk, 1 township treasurer, and 1 road overseer.
In this election for County Seat the votes were as
follows:
Decatur Centre 257 and Oberlin 552.
