Among the young eastern men that floated into Oberlin in 1879 was Frank H. Smith who came from Massachusetts and went to work in a store, and has always been accounted one of the best salesmen in the city. Mr. Smith has for thirty years been classed as one of the best singers in the city, having a fine well cultivated tenor voice. Six years ago he was a candidate for county treasurer. The various candidates were being called out to make a speech and when it came Smith's turn to talk he walked out before the two hundred delegates and said he could make a speech but if they wanted him to sing a song he would be glad to accomodate them. He sang very sweetly "A girl that is good to the old folks will surely be good to you" and completely captured the convention and was nominated on the third ballot. He made a splendid officer and retired two years ago with the respect and good will of the entire county. Mr. Smith stood by and watched the first paper printed on the HERALD press and has taken it since. He is now connected with the Oberlin Mercantile Co.
