A station on the Missouri River, Ft. Scott & Gulf R. R., and village of 300 inhabitants, settled in 1860, and located on Cox's creek, in the northeastern part of Crawford county, 20 miles from Girard, the county seat, and 104 from Kansas City, Mo. It contains three churches--Baptist, Methodist and Congregational-and a public school. It shipments are principally grain, coal and live stock. Stage to Girard and Lamar, Mo. Daily mail. Joseph T. BEULAH

A station on the Missouri River, Fort Scott & Gulf R. R., located in the southern central part of Crawford county, 6 miles from Girard, the county seat, and 130 miles from Kansas City, Mo. It contains a Methodist Episcopal church and graded school. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, Adams. Daily mail. Settled 1874. Population, 250. Mary E. King, postmistress.

CATO

The oldest settlement in Crawford county, is a place of 150 population, located on Dry Wood creek, in the northeastern part of the county, 13 miles from Girard, the county seat. Its nearest shipping point is Pawnee, on the Missouri River, Ft. Scott & Gulf R.R. The village contains a steam grist mill, Baptist church and public school. Live stock is largely exported. CHEROKEE

Was settled in 1874 and is incorporated as a city. It is a station on the Missouri river, Ft. Scott and Gulf R.R., located in the extreme south of Crawford county, 12 miles from Girard the county seat, and 129 miles from Kansas City, Mo. It contains two flour mills, a Methodist church and common school, and has also two hotels, a weekly paper the Cherokee Banner, and a fire brick and pottery ware manufactory. FARLINGTON

A station on the Missouri river, Ft. Scott and Gulf R. R., and village on Dry Wood creek in the northern part of Crawford county, 7 miles from Girard, the county seat, and 117 from Kansas City, Mo. The principal industry is coal mining. There is a Baptist church and public school in the village. Chief exports, coal, corn and produce. Daily mail. Settled 1870. Population, 75. G. E. GIRARD.

A thriving city of 1000 population, settled in 1869 and located on Cow creek, in the central part of Crawford County, of which it is the county seat. It is a station on the Missouri River, Ft. Scott and Gulf R.R. and the present northwestern terminus of the Joplin R.R. Girard has two steam flour mills, four churches--Methodist, Presbyterian, Christian and Baptist, a good school, one bank, the Farmers' and Merchants', with a capital of $50,000, two hotels, the St James being a first class house and the best on this line of road. There are two weekly newspapers published here, the Press and News. In the city there are two I.O.O.F. lodges, one lodge and a Chapter, A.F.& A.M., I.O.G.T. lodge, two Granges and a lodge of the Improved Order of Red Men. Principle exports, grain, live stock, flax seed and castor beans. Stage to Jacksonville, Mulberry Grove and Arcadia. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, Adams. Daily mail. C. G. Hawley, postmaster.

A village located on Lightning and Limestone creeks, in the extreme south of Crawford county, 15 miles from Girard, the county seat, 7 from Cherokee, on the Missouri River, Ft. Scott and Gulf R. R., it nearest shipping point, and 136 from Kansas City. It contains a saw mill, two churches, Presbyterian and Methodist, and a district school. Principal exports, grain and hogs. Stage to Cherokee tri-weekly, carrying the mail. Settled 1866. Population, 200. Eugene B. Guild, postmaster.

MULBERRY GROVE

On Little Walnut creek and the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Ry., was settled in 1873, and is incorporated as a city of the third class. It is located in the northwestern part of Crawford county, 16 miles from Girard, the couty seat, 124 from Kansas City and 155 from Topeka. Contains a steam corn sheller, elevator and corn meal mill, three churches, Methodist, Baptist and Catholic, and a district school. Shipments, grain, castor beans and live stock.
