Beta Reading Club
March 28, 1887
Wakefield, Kansas

Last Friday evening the Wakefield Beta Reading Club held its closing session for the season, in the Congregational parsonage, President Dodson in the chair. During the session the members have carefully read part of "In Memoriam" and the whole of "Enoch Arden," "Miles Standish," "Evangeline." "Lay of the Last Minstrel," and "Lady of the Kae." Rev. R. Kerr acted as critic. Outlines of the five complete poems have been given as essays, by Miss Jennie C. Kerr, and Messr. Phil Parrott, Elmer Dodson, Bert Batchelor and Ernest Spooner. These essays evinced a mastery of the subjects, and a power of condensation and literary expression which were highly creditable to those authors. Altogether, the Club has been quite a success and has proved a source of culture and pleasure which made the adjournment till the first Friday of October an occasion of regret to the members.
