John D. Weltmer.
John D. Weltmer, the present county clerk, is not only a pioneer but he
is a Brown County product as well.
He was born November 19, 1859 in
Walnut Creek Township, now Hamlin Township, and is a son of Jacob
and Elizabeth Weltmer, who were
among the earliest of Brown County's
settlers. Mr. Weltmer received a
good common school education and
then started to teaching. For ten
years he taught in the Brown County schools, three of them being in his
own home district. For four consecutive terms he was elected trustee
of Hiawatha Township giving universal satisfaction to the people of
the Township. At the Republican
primaries in 1899 he received the nomination for County Clerk and at the
election following was elected to
that office by a majority of 1034 over
his fusion opponent. He is a member of Hamlin lodge A. F. & A. M.
and Oak Leaf Camp of M. W. A.
He was married August 17, 1882 to
Miss Hattie Moore, daughter of Dr.
E. W. Moore formerly of Hamlin.
Their family consists of three sons,
Luther, aged 18, Frank, aged 13, Ivan,
aged 3 and a daughter, Nellie, aged 8.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Weltmer are
members of the Christian Church at
Hiawatha.
