Nick Larkin

by Della Larkin

Nick Larkin was born May 10, 1887 to Patrick and Mary Eliza Flohr Larkin, in Barber County. His parents came here from Missouri. He grew up in the Deerhead Community, attending the Deerhead school. He was the third of five children. Mary married Willis Dunn, Ed married Winnie Cooke, Nick married Della Helton, Chet married Irene Gibbs and John who married Zoa Meyers. All are deceased except Della, Irene and Zoa.

Della Irene Helton, daughter of Samuel and Mary Jane Cliff Helton, was born February 9, 1900, on the old Adams place. Della's father was born near Lexington, Kentucky, and came to Kansas when he was nine years old, growing to manhood near Sun City. Della's mother came to Barber County when she was a child, with her parents, and settled on a farm west of Sun City (now owned by the Frank Hoagland heirs). There were three girls and seven boys in the family. Mary Jane Helton died at age 83 years.

Della came from a family of 12 children, five of whom died in infancy. These grew to adulthood; Anderson, who married Lizzie Doud, Laura Pearl who married R.G. Scott, Cora Ellen, married Tom Edmonds, Della, who married Nick Larkin, Bill who married Rachel Barnes, Fern married Keith Walker and Arthur Ernest who never married. Della, Rachel and Keith are still living.

Della attended school in Sun City. Nick and Della were married October 28, 1916 at Pratt, Kansas. They made their home in the Deerhead Community and have two sons, Ernest Harold who married Mary Ellen Shepler and lives in Sun City, and Don Patrick who married Lavonia Gregory and lives in Wichita. Ernest and Mary Ellen's daughter, Mary Beth married Kerri Davis and they have a son, Ernest Glenn. They live in Sun City. Dona and Lavonia have a son Larry who married Dee Ann, and three daughters; Kelly who married Mark Miles, Tracie Lynn and Heather Ann.

Nick and Della sold their farm to Swaydens and it is now owned by Beulah Cline. They moved to Sun City around 1968, where they made their home until Nick passed away in 1970. Della still maintains her home in Sun City where she enjoys cooking, raising houseplants and visiting with her family and friends.

Comments: I really enjoyed reading the history of the Heltons and Larkins. I am the daughter of Larry Larkin, son of Don Larkin who was the son of Nick and Della Larkin. I am glad that our family history is being remembered. I would be interested in purchasing copies of some of the pictures. I do have a picture of Nick and Della on what I was told was their wedding day, but I am not sure about that. Keep up the good work. It is much appreciated and I enjoyed looking at all of it. I will be sharing it with my children as well.
