ATCHISON,
ATCHISON COUNTY. The county seat, is situated on the Missouri River in the northeastern part of the State, between the Missouri cities of St. Joseph and Kansas City; is the eastern terminus of the great Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe thoroughfare, and has a population of eighteen to twenty thousand. Its site is in the form of an amphitheater, though not lying on the river bottoms proper. Its topography is greatly diversified, and the numerous hills abound in quarries of blue limestone. The city is reputed to be healthy and clean. It was founded in 1854 by a town company, one of whose members was the now well-known Dr. Stringfellow. The first newspaper was the Squatter Sovereign, which appeared in 1855. The first railroad, what is now the Kansas City, St. Joseph and Council Bluffs, was built in 1860. Work on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe commenced in 1871. Atchison is very favorably situated as a commercial city, being the converging point of an extensive railroad system, and located on a navigable river. It is a great grain market, and has elevator facilities for handling a large quantity of grain. With all great grain centers, it is also a large flour producer, and has numerous extensive flour mills. The city has also stock-yards, and a pork-packing establishment which does an immense business. All other industries are well represented, especially manufactories, which produce such articles as canned fruit, flax, spice, crackers. cigars, harness and saddles, barrels, linseed oil, furniture, carriages, machinery, iron work, etc. The hotels are numerous and elegant. Six newspapers are pub lished in the city, three of which issue daily editions. Atchison is well-known to be a great railroad center, the following lines either terminating or passing through the city; the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, that modern wonder of the railroad world, of which Atchison is a terminal point, Central Branch Union Pacific, Atchison and Nebraska, Missouri Pacific, Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific, Hannibal and St. Joseph, Kansas City, St. Joseph and Council Bluff's, and Burlington and Missouri River Railroads. A Union Depot, the largest and finest in Kansas--a Gothic structure, heated by steam and possessing all the appointments of buildings of its class--has been built to accommodate the large passenger traffic.

There are many public enterprises well sustained, among them a system of water works and a line of street railway. The river is spanned at this place by a handsome bridge. Not only is Atchison a lively business mart, but it is socially attractive its churches form a very prominent feature. It has a library, four large public school buildings, and three higher institutions of learning, viz.: St. Benedict's College, the Atchison Institute, and St. Scholasticas Academy. Distance from Topeka, fifty miles; from Pueblo, 619 miles; from Santa Fe, 853 miles.
