ATCHISON COUNTY. Situated in the northeastern portion of the State, is bounded on the north by Doniphan and Brown counties, on the east by the Missouri river, on the south by Leavenworth and Jefferson counties, and on the west by Jackson. 0rganized in 1855, it contains 409 square miles, or 261,760 acres, of which about 181,000 are under cultivation. County seat, Atchison; population, 16,770. Coal is found and mined to a limited extent, and limestone is very abundant. Railroad facilities are good, three important lines centering at Atchison (besides those on the Missouri side); these are, the main line, Atchison extension and C. B. div. of the M. P. Ry; the A., T. & S. F., while the K. C. br. of the U. P. Ry runs through the southwest corner. The surface is undulating, with bluffs along the Missouri river. Population June 1883, 28,858.


ARRINGTON. An improving village situated on the Delaware river, a water power stream, in the southwest of Atchison county, 26 miles southwest of Atchison, the count seat, and 37 north of Topeka and 2 east of Larkin on the C. div. of the U. P. Ry, its shipping station. Banking facilities at Valley Falls, 9 miles south. Methodist, Christian and Baptist churches and a public school are sustained. Live stock, hay and grain are shipped. CUMMINGSVILLE. A village in Atchison County, on the A., T. & S. F. R. r. (railroad name Cummings), 11 miles southwest of Atchison, the county seat, and 40 from Topeka. It has Methodist and Baptist churches and a district school. Ships flax, grain and live stock. Population 100. Tel., W. U. Exp., Adams and Wells, Fargo & Co. Mail daily. R. Kennish, postmaster.

EDEN. A village on Independence creek, in Atchinson county, 11 miles northwest of Atchison, the county seat, its nearest railroad point and bank location. It has a public school, Catholic church, and ships grain and live stock. Population, 80. It is on the daily stage route between Atchison and Hiawatha. Anton Tester, postmaster.

EFFINGHAM. A flourishing town on the C. B. div. of the M. P. Ry, in the central part of Atchison county, 18 miles west of Atchison, the county seat, the nearest bank location, and 68 (by rail) from Topeka. Baptist, Catholic Presbyterian and Methodist churches and a district school are sustained. Grain and live stock form the shipments. Population, 600. Tel., W. U. Exp., Pacific. Mail, daily. G. W. FARMINGTON. A town located near Stranger creek, in the central part of Atchison county, and a station on the C. B. div. of the M. P. Ry., 13 miles southwest of Atchison, the county seat, its nearest bank location, and 60 from Topeka. Grain is the principal shipment. Has a Christian church and public school. Population, 50. GOOD INTENT. Country postoffice in Atchison county, 6 miles northwest of Atchison, the county seat and nearest railroad and banking point, and 56 from Topeka. It has a Congregational church and district school, and ships grain and produce. It is on the daily mail stage route from Atchison to Highland. C. M. Streeper, postmaster and farmer.


HURON. A village and station on the O. line of the M. P. Ry, in the northern part of Atchison county, 16 miles northwest of Atchison, the county seat. The nearest bank is at Everest, 6 miles north. Has Christian and Presbyterian churches and public school. Live stock, grain and flax are shipped. Population, 300. Tel., W. Exp., Pacific. Mail, daily. D. Starr, postmaster.

KENNEKUK. A village on the Delaware river, in the northwestern part of Atchison county, 25 miles northwest of Atchison, the county seat, and 6 southwest of Everest, on the Omaha line of the M. P. Ry, its nearest banking and railroad point. It has a population of 25, Methodist and Baptist churches and a district school. Mail, daily by stage from Muscotah to Willis; fare, $1. A town on the Elk river, partly in Atchison and partly in Jackson counties, 10 miles east of Holton, the county seat of Jackson county, the nearest bank location, and 30 southwest of Atchison. It is a station on the K. C. br. of the U. P. Ry, 47 miles from Leavenworth and 72 from Kansas City, Mo. Has Methodist and Catholic churches and a district school and a population of 300. MUSCOTAH. An incorporated city in the western central part of Atchison county, on the B. div. of the M. P. It is located on the Delaware river, an excellent water power stream, and has Methodist and Congregational churches, a district school, and ships grain, flax and live stock. Population, 800. Tel., W. OAK MILLS. Settled in 1854, is an incorporated village and station on the M. P. Ry, in Walnut township, southeastern part of Atchison county. It is on the Missouri river, and is 38 miles from Kansas City, Mo., and 10 from Atchison, the county seat and nearest bank location. Shipments, grain and wood. Population, 70. Mail, daily.
