Atchison County Directories North Missouri and Eastern Kansas Business Directory for 1867-1868
Atchison.
The County Seat of Atchison county is situated on the west bank of the
Missouri river, 40 miles in a direct
line, but considerable more by river,
above the mouth of the Kansas river,
and 16 miles above Ivcaven worth and
15 miles below St. Joseph; it is situated at the eastern terminus of the
Atchison and Pikes Peak R. R., on
an extensive bend of the Missouri river, which it makes toward the west,
bringing this place farther west than
any other important place in the State
on the river. The country back is
very good and has a rich soil and is
well cultivated. The railroad west is
completed out as far as Nemaha
county, and will soon reach the Little
Blue, which will open a very fine trade
to this already enterprising town. Population about 5,000.
