ELSMORE. About 300 inhabitants in Elsmore township, southeastern part of Allen Co., 18 miles from Iola (c h), and 16 from Humboldt, its shipping point and location of nearest bank. It has a district school, Methodist and Christian churches, and ships corn and hogs. Stage to Humboldt and Fort Scott, tri-weekly, with mail; fare 50 cents and $1.50. O. B. Wood, postmaster.

FAIR LAWN. Recently established postoffice in the eastern central part of Allen Co., 11 miles east of Iola (c h), on the K. C., L. & S. R. R., the shipping point and location of nearest bank. It has a population of 150, and a district school, in which services are held by the different religious sects. Corn, cattle, wheat and hogs are marketed. A general store is needed. GENEVA. Was founded in 1857 on the Neosho river in Geneva township, northwest corner of Allen Co., 10 miles from Iola (c h). Neosho Falls and Colony are its shipping points, the former 4 miles west, the latter 8 miles northeast. It has Congregational and Presbyterian churches, a district school, and about 100 inhabitant. Stages to Neosho Falls and Colony, daily, with mail. J. M. Mattoon, postmaster.

HUMBOLDT. An incorporated city of the third class, first settled in 1857, and located on the Neosho river, in Humboldt township, southwestern part of Allen Co., 9 miles from Iola (c h). It is an important station on the Neosho division of the M. K. & T. Ry, also on the K. C., L. & S. R. R,and is 85 miles from Parsons, 86 from Kansas City, the same distance from Lawrence, and 115 from Topeka. The principal manufactures are a grist mill, furniture actory and a flour mill, while the shipments are chiefly grain, flour, castor beans and live stock. Religious and secular instruction is afforded by 6 churches and 2 schools, the denominations of the former being Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Evangelical and Lutheran. There are several hotels and a bank here, as well as 2 newspapers, the Union and Inter State. Stags to Erie, Fort Scott, Fredonia and Buffalo. Telegraph, W. U. Express, Adams. Mail, daily.

IOLA. An important station on the K. C., L. & S. R. R., located in the central part of Allen Co., of which it is the county seat. It is one mile east of the Neosho river, 78 from Lawrence, 108 from Topeka, and 105 from Kansas City, There are here graded and high schools, with 6 teachers, and Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist and Episcopal churches. The town is increasing rapidly in business and population having gained during 1879 some 400 in population, making the total number about 1,500. There have been 30 new houses built, and a good prospect of several large brick and stone business houses being built in the spring of 1880. It is doing a fine trade, and the country around is settling up very rapidly, which gives an additional impetus to business. A machine shop, 350 by 300, at present unoccupied, offers an opportunity for manufacturing enterprises. Shipments, hogs, cattle, corn, wheat and castor beans. Stage to Ft. Scott, semi-weekly. C. M. ROCKLOW. Recently established postoffice on Marmaton river, in township of that name, Allen Co., 18 miles southeast of Iola (c h), and 21 east of Humboldt, its shipping point and bank location.
