Haycock was alone, no family, so Uncle John married her on January 31, 1893 at the residence of J.B. Stillings. Uncle John's home site, land he inherited from his father was situated on the left of the road toward Bellview as follows: The N1/2 of NW, Section 14 T.10 R. 7 containing in all 80 acres more or less. After Uncle John's death in 1908, his widow, Dovie, sold the place to Samford Mc Murphy, who in turn sold the place to Charles R. and Jessie Vaughan Kennedy. John Washington Reaves and wife, Dovie A. Haycock, had no children. They adopted his great niece, Carrie Annie Dear (Deer). After the death of John W. Reaves, his widow, Dovie A. Haycock Reaves married J.D. She was born 12 Jan 1855 in Blacks Bend Wilcox County, Alabama1, and died 15 Apr 1934 in Reaves Chapel Community, Wilcox County Alabama1.Notes for W ILLIAM MCDANIEL REAVES:William McDaniel Reaves, Sr, born November 15th, 1844 in Nellie, Alabama, was the son of James Leon and Sarah S. Vinson Reaves, of English-Irish descent. He was a farmer, member of Reaves Chapel Methodist Church and veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted in the Confederate Army on November 25th, 1862, at Choctaw Bluff, Alabama, and served as courier with Company F, Baldwin Rifles, 21st Alabama Regiment. He was captured at Fort Gaines in Mobile, Alabama, held prisoner on Ship Island off the coast of Biloxi, Mississippi, and was exchanged at Meridian, Mississippi on April 1865. Family legend is that he walked every mile of the way from Meridian to Nellie, Alabama. He died February 12th, 1928, age 83, at home and was buried in Reaves Chapel Cemetery, Reaves Chapel Road, Camden, Alabama. His grave is marked with a Confederate stone. He married Harriett Frances Kennedy on January 25th, 1882, at her home in Nellie, Alabama. She was born January 12th, 1855 in Blacks Bend (Coy), Alabama, and died April 15th, 1934, age 79 and was buried in Reaves Chapel Cemetery. She was the daughter of Thomas Lee and Martha Elizabeth Pilkington Kennedy. Thomas Lee Kennedy was born in Sumter County, South Carolina, son of William and Ann Muldrow Kennedy of Scot-Irish descent. He came to Alabama in 1840, first settling near Bells Landing in Monroe County, Alabama, then moved to Blacks Bend (Coy), Alabama in 1850. Martha Elizabeth Pilkington was born in Marion District, South Carolina, came to Alabama in 1839 with her parents, John Dura (Drury) and Elizabeth McCown Pilkington. Six children were born to William and Harriett Frances Kennedy Reaves: Frances Emma, Harriett Issie, James Thomas, William McDaniel, Jr., Sarah Martha, and Minnie Lee. Reaves of Sedan died at home last Sunday, February 12, and was buried at Reaves Chapel Cemetery on Monday. Mr. Reaves was a Confederate Veteran. Democrat of the old school, a successful farmer, and a loyal citizen. Though he was above eighty years of age, he led an active life until recently. Mr. Reaves leaves a large family connection and a host of friends throughout the county. The Era extends sympathy to the bereaved ones. From the Wilcox Progressive Era, March 22, 1928 "In Memory" Another veteran has answered the last roll call. Early Sunday morning, February 12, 1928 just as the sun was coming over the eastern horizon, the spirit of Mr. Mack Reaves took its flight to the God who gave it. He had been in declining health for some months and his death was not unexpected. He bore his afflictions with much patience and fortitude, and when the spirit left the body it was as quiet as the passing of a shadow. His sweet, affectionate wife who never left his bedside, was not aware of the change until she looked into his pallid face. His calm and placid look showed signs of peacefulness and resignation. He was never heard to utter one word of complaint, and once in his delirium he talked of the Resurrection. This venerable man had reached the age of 83 years. He served in the Civil War in the 21st Alabama Division and after the war closed he returned home and married Miss Hattie Kennedy. To them were born six children --two boys and four girls. One son, Bill gave his life for his country's sake during the World War. His wife and other children and several grandchildren survive him. He was a successful farmer and loved the freedom and enchantment of country life. Fox hunting was one of his much loved sports and, until his weakened vitality prevented it, he called himself "one of the boys" and frequently indulged in it. Honest was his policy and this was evidenced in his daily life and attitude toward all mankind. He belonged to the household of faith, professing Jesus in early life, and was a consistent member of Reaves Chapel Methodists Episcopal Church South. His body was laid to rest in Reaves Chapel Cemetery to await the Resurrection Morn, and to our beloved fri3end we do not say goodbye, but rather good morning, for we know that he shall live again. Death's wicked hand turns joyful days into sorrow but the burden-bearer helps to bear the sorrows: and we point the bereaved ones to our beloved apostle's own words. "As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive". Reaves-Thompson Wedding On Friday Evening at 6:00 o'clock, December 26, 1917, Miss Issie Reaves and Mr. Samuel Ross Thompson, Jr. were joined in the holy bonds of matrimony. The wedding took place at Reaves Chapel Church, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion with Southern Smilax, candles and ferns. The bride and groom and their attendants,: Miss Mattie Reaves and Howard Vaughn, Miss Clara Thompson and James Tom Reaves, Miss Pearl Thompson and Chester Farish and Miss Karen Loftin and Robert Kennedy entered the church while Lohengrin's Wedding March was played by Miss Edge. A short but impressive ceremony was performed by Rev. Strout of Camden, Alabama. The bride never looked more beautiful than in her wedding gown of satin and georgette crepe. She carried a bouquet of white roses tied with dainty white ribbon. The bridesmaids wore white-gap silk dresses with light blue sashes. Immediately after the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. S.R. Notes for WILLIAM MCDANIEL REAVES JR.: William McDaniel Reaves, Jr., a member of the 38th Infantry, Machine Gun Company, world War I, was killed October 11th, 1918, in the Battle of Argonne Forest, France. His parents, William McDaniel Sr., and Harriett Frances Kennedy Reaves received notice of his death from the War Department November 25, 1918. The news of this death came at a time when all were rejoicing over the termination of the conflict. His body was returned to his home on September 19, 1921, sent from Hoboken and accompanied by a private in the US Army. The remains were met by his aged father, now in his 76th year, a Confederate Veteran of the 21st Alabama Infantry from 1862 to 1865, also by his brother, James "Jim Tom" Reaves and other relatives and friends. The flag shrouded casket was conveyed to Reaves Chapel Cemetery, Reaves Chapel Road, Camden, Alabama, and in this very hallowed cemetery, the funeral was conducted on September 22, 1921, and his pastor Rev. " I was about seven years old when Uncle Billie's (William McDaniel Reaves, Jr.) body was brought back to the home of my grandparents, William McDaniel, St. and Harriett Frances Kennedy Reaves, for burial." "My mother, Frances Emma Reaves (Mrs. John Godfrey Lambrecht) was his sister, and I accompanied my parents and six brothers and sisters-James Albert, Henry Winfred, Godfrey McDaniel "Mack", Harriett Mary "Hattie Mae", Julia Aline, and Annette Naomi, the baby of the family then, to Grandpa and Grandma's home for the funeral. I can remember Grandpa Mack walking up and down the driveway by the house trailed by most of us grandchildren and several of the older family members and friends. He was very stooped, his face almost to his knees, and his hands locked behind his back. His back was injured during the time he was held prisoner during the civil War on Ship Island off the coast of Biloxi, Mississippi. I recall that some of the adults said, "Papa, are you going to open the casket?" No, he replied, we can't do that. If that is not Bill's body in there, I couldn't stand it , and I know it would kill Hattie and you children." Slim was born at home in Franklin, Monroe County, alabama either December 1918 or January , 1919. Until first grade, his name was Casle Lee, His mama assured me that he was named for a great uncle. In those days, teacher were held in highest esteem. Well, this esteemed teacher proceeded to change the spelling of his name to Cassie. That was his name from that day for the rest of his life. By having been recorded on his school record, it stuck. He never did know the date of his birth. He decided his mama most likely knew when he was born, so he took January 6, 1919 for his birthday. Much as most kids in that time, he went to a small school in Franklin for a few years. Then on to Monroe County High School in Monroeville, Alabama. He next worked for his papa in the logging business. he quit that job because his older brother tried to boss him. He worked for Vanity Fair for a short time. He got a job with a furniture factory and worked there until Germany and Japan wanted to take over the world. The Second World War started. A lot of young men and wormen "joined up". All able-bodied men were drafted. Slim was inducted and sworn in at Ft. McClellan, Alabama, May 16, 1942. About this time at Ft. D.A. Russell in Marfa, Texas, the 81st Chemical Mortar Battalion was being formed. Slim was assigned to this Battalion. Small groups were assigned all along until October 17th when 500 men from the land of Turnip Greens and Cornbread descended on the battalion. These were raw recruits, no basic training. The 81st motto was "Equal to the Task". These men were whipped into shape. P/D/Q. The 81st was formed when the country was faced with the necessity of creating a highly trained, efficient Army in a minimum of time. They thought they had gone through some tough training at Ft. D. A. Russell. They found out what touch training was when they arrived at Camp Gordon Johnston in Carrabelle, Florida. They went through highly specialized training. The program was vigorous, hazardous and exciting. IT was during this time that several fell by the wayside due to the rapid pace and constant exertion under the hot tropical sun. This program consisited of cobat swimming, speed marching and unorthodoz exercise such as street fighting, judo, hand-tohand fighting, use of knives, bayonets, demolition and use of explosives. After still more training at Camp Pickett, Virginia, Company D which was Slim's company was detached from the batallion for oversears duty, August 13, 1943. The men of COmpany D were fortunate enough to be sent over on the Queen Elizabeth. Five days later, Company D was at the famous Assault Training Cneter near Ilfracombe, North Devon, England. Intensive amphibious and assault exercises were conducted at the A.T.C. and along the western adn southern coast of England. It was learned that German E. Boats were operating in that vicinity. It was here that D Company rejoined the battalion. After a little more than six months of intensive preparation following its arrival in England, the battalion was alerted on May 12, 1944 for what proved to be the greatest event of all time-the Invasion of Europe. In the invasion of France, the mission of the 81st was to furnish close mortar support for the two leading assault regiments. In the accomplishment of this mission, the 81st landed at +1 plus 50 minutes on D-Day under continuous fire from the enemy. After many hard-fought battles across France and German, the Germans were defeated!! Thank God . Such a joyful time, you can't imagine! Slim came to see me soon after he got home. He knew I had a big crush on him when I was about 14. He didn't know what he was getting into. To cut it short, we got married. We started farming. We raised 6 children. Those wonderful children gave us 15 grandchidlren adn going on 8 great-grandchildren. The greatest kids on Earth. In the 60 years, Slim and I were married, our greatest accomplishment is our family.
