The Means family lived and raised their families in Greene County mostly in the Pleasant Ridge area. The family ventured into Pickens County also.

Thomas Means was born March 14, 1791 in Union County, South Carolina and married Jane Kennedy on January 6, 1814 in that county. Their daughter, Jane Means, was born Oct. 22, 1814. The following January 1815, the mother died. Thomas Means came to Greene County about 1826 and lived here until about 1845 when he moved to Saltillo, Miss. where he died September 23, 1862.

Mary Means was born 1794. She married John P. Archibald. They made their home in Pleasant Ridge and both are buried there. They were the parents of seven children:
Eliza Jane Archibald;
Margaret M. Archibald;
Elizabeth C. Archibald married Ralph W. Dodson;
Mary Amanda Archibald married Samuel Wiggins Hood;
Vincent Archibald;
Samuel Scott Archibald, who raised his family in Saltillo, Miss.;
Martha P. Archibald married James H. Weir. She died in 1911. Known in the family as "Cousin Mattie".
