If Nancy Caroline Elizabeth (Carrie) Maughan’s mother was Mary Ann
Elizabeth Johnson, it makes sense that she was the Mary E. Johnson,
daughter of Samuel and Nancy Johnson and the granddaughter of Gail and
Rebecca Johnson.
Mary E. would have been born in about 1856. She would have been 15 when
Carrie was born.
1870 Census, Pickens county, Olney, page 8. The census was taken on
July 1, 1870, so Mary and Capus Maughan wouldn’t have married until after
this. Samuel had evidently died between 1860 and 1870.
