pleased God to bless me, it is my will advice that they be dispersed of as follows viz:

I have found and confirmed much of the info back to Hugh G McAllister Sr.

but could find no info on his parents due to many records being destroyed in SC,

during the Revolution and Civil Wars.

I have been searching for him as Hugh "Gaston", due to his son Hugh Jr. being

identified as Gaston in message boards and due to later descendants being

named Gaston. I now feel this has been mis-spelled or just wrong, and I'll

explain why later.

I found a message on Genforum's "Mcallister" forum, titled :

"McCallister / McAllister born SC 1813/14+/-" dated 2002.

In this post, this person speculated that Hugh G. may be the son of a Charles

and Elizabeth McAllister; with Elizabeth being the daughter of a Hugh Graham

and his wife Sevil. After reading this I set out to find information to prove or

disprove this speculation. I searched the census records and searched for the

will spoken of in the post.

I located the Will of Hugh Graham at the Museum of History and Archives of

South Carolina and downloaded a copy.

In Searching the census transcripts of Williamsburg, S.C. where the will was

filed, I also noticed the name of another family that proved to be helpful. As I

researched the Williamsburg censuses, I noticed that near each McAllister or

Graham family was a family named Gaskin. I wondered if rather than Hugh

"Gaston" could this have been mis-spelled or, due to a Scottish verbal accent,

mis-pronounced and was really "Gaskin" - and not Gaston.

Back at the Museum of History and Archives of SC, I located a will of an

Ezekel Gaskins, from Kershaw, SC and downloaded a copy.

In this will, Ezekel Gaskins leaves 5 schillings to each of his children. The first

of which is a Cathrin Maccullaster.

I searched censuses and archives in SC for Catherine McAllister / Gaskins

and found one that was married to John McAllister in Williamsburg and in the

Familysearch IGI found that the names of her children included several names

that were given to descendants that I have already verified both in Houston

County, Alabama, Georgia and SC. These included 1 named Charles that was

born in SC.

In John's Will (also from SC Archives), he mentions a son named Charles.

During this peroid, I found 2 Charles:

1 was shown as btwn 26 - 45 in the 1790 Williamsburg, SC Census.

(Same age as John)

The other was between 17 and 26 in 1820 who was born in

Williamsburg and is shown with young children in the 1820 census

(I believe this is the father of Hugh G. Sr.)

In searching SC censuses, I noticed that in the late 1700's there were few

mcallisters, and according to CMA website there were 13 Mcallister families.

Noting these facts, I concluded that this is the one that is spoken of in the

Forum.

Through all of my research, and the facts I have collected, it is my belief that:

John Mcallister (b. 1752) married Cathrine Gaskins (b.1756 - daughter of Ezekel

Gaskins and either his 1st wife, unknown, or his 2nd wife Talitha) and had a

child named

Charles McAllister (b. 1791) who married Elizabeth Graham (abt 1790 -

daughter of Hugh and Sevil Graham)

Who had a child named

Hugh (b. 1813, Williamsburg SC - and believed to be Hugh Gaston or Gaskin

McAllister b. 1813)

While speaking with Keith Seagle, and John Earl Smith, both discussed

the possibility of a land dispute that may have lead to family members changing

the spelling of their name. In Keith's notes that he e-mailed to me in 2008, there

was mention of Hugh G. having a 2nd wife after Sarah's death. I then searched

thru the Geneva County, Alabama 1880 census and found "G. Hugh McAlister

(66yo) with a wife A.E. Mary (20yo), and sister -in- law, Sarah Armstrong,

living 2 houses down from Andrew Vincent. I have not been able to find any

Armstrong in Dale, Geneva, Henry and Wakulla, FL counties before 1880, and

no record of A. E. Mary McAlister (of any spelling) born in 1860, in any later

censuses in Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Wakulla, Jackson, and Holmes

counties.

However, if Hugh (66) married a 20 year old (20 years younger than his

kids), only a year after Sarah's death, this may have caused hard feelings, and/or

a dispute over Hugh's estate, between his children and his 2nd wife.

1. Charles and Hugh obtained a marriage license in 1833 in Telfair, Georgia,

USA.

2. He had a residence in 1837 in Hawkinsville, Pulaski, Georgia, USA. where

Son Hugh Jr. was born. (My assumption) There is a McAllister Cemetery

in Dodge county, Ga - in an area that was once part of both Telfair, and

Pulaski counties. I assume this was their land.

McAlister Cemetery is a Cemetery in the state of Georgia (county of

Dodge), located at latitude - longitude coordinates (also known as lat-long

or GPS coordinates) of N 32.22097 and W -83.33428. McAlister Cemetery

is shown in the center of the topographic (topo) map, which is sourced from

the United States Geographical Survey map USGS West of Eastman quad.

The nearest major town is Hville, GA.

no stone is there, it is my belief that Hugh G. Sr. is buried at next to his wife

Sarah D Gregory McAllister.

During the trip to the cemetery, we noticed that there was an open space

near the stone for Sarah D. It looks as though there may be a grave there

and someone has placed a cinder block at the place that the headstone would

be. Since there is no other known grave, and most other family were buried

near there in New Providence Cemetary, it would not be unreasonable to

assume that Hugh G. Sr. was buried next to Sarah.

It is easy to miss this cemetery. It sits at the edge of the property and was

completely overgrown in 2001. Many of the inscriptions have been worn

away with time and will be unreadable in the not so distant future.

Smith Family Cemetery is located at 31 degrees 4 minutes, 27.63 seconds

north latitude and 85 degrees, 27 minutes 51.89 seconds west longitude.

From the juncton of State Road 109 and New Hope Rd. in SW Houston Co,

Alabama, go west approximately 2/10ths of a mile. The Smith Family

cemetery is on the south side of New Hope Road. There is no sign, but the

tombstones abut the road right of way and are easily visible. This cemetery

is not being maintained and is overgrown with brush. There is one shattered,

illegible tombstone and 5 flat concrete grave covers with no legible

inscription. Graves marked with metal funeral home markers are noted as

these markers often do not survive for a long time. The cemetery area,

family groupings, and all tombstones were recorded with a digital camera

and the full set of high resolution photos plus this text file will be placed in

the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, for public use. Original

This story was told to me when I

was in gradeschool, while writing a

report about our family name. It has

been repeated by my father and

Grandfather several times since.

According to my father (Howard

Lawrence) and Grandfather

(Howard Shelton) our family once

spelled their name McA(llister).

During the move to Georgia or soon thereafter, one of our Grandfathers

stole a horse. In order to keep from getting caught, he changed the

spelling of his last name to the McC. spelling.

Noticing the military and census records, all ancestors spelled their name

as McA. until we find the gravestone of Sarah D. (Gregory) McAllister.

Because Hugh G. Jr used the McC. spelling on his gravestone, and this is

the first usage of the McC. spelling in our family line, I assume that Hugh

G. Jr. is the person this story is told about.

31st Infantry Regiment [also called 27th Regiment] completed its

organization in November, 1861, at Cusseta, Georgia. Its

companies were from the counties of Muscogee, Chattahoochee,

Monroe, Bartow, Pulaski, Dawson, and Newton.

After serving Savannah it was ordered to Virginia and placed in

Lawton's, John B. Gordon's, and C.A. Evans' Brigade, Army of

Northern Virginia.

The 31st participated in various conflicts from Seven Days' Battles

to Cold Harbor, moved with Early to the Shenandoah Valley,

and took part in the final campaign at Appomattox.

It contained 1,200 men when organized, and reported 170

casualties at Gaines' Mill , 55 at Sharpsburg , 78 at

Fredericksburg , and 23 at Chancellorsville . The regiment

lost more than twenty-five percent of the 252 engaged at

Gettysburg , and surrendered with 120, of which 66 were

armed.

The field officers were Colonel Clement A. Evans, John H. Lowe,

and Pleasant J. Phillips; and Lieutenant Colonels John T. Crowder,

Daniel P. Hill, and R.T. Pride.

Jack Smith (Lennie and Aubrey's son) says he has always heard that

"Hugh Mac" McAllister fought and was wounded at Sharpsburg, (or

Antietam creek as the North calls it). The story is that he always said

"I thought I was wounded so bad I couldn't move, but when them

Yankees broke through, I got up and ran!"

Stated that James "Curtis" McCallister lived in the white wood

framed house beside Howard Shelton McCallister

(Granddaddy). He had a stroke while plowing tomatoes in a

field behind his house (located where Janie Williamson lives

now), and he died several days later .

Also remembers him kneeling down while talking to his sons

in the barn that was located between Granddaddy's

(H. Shelton) house and his.

He had a small boat with a 12 hsp motor on it and liked to

fish.

Wore coveralls all the time.

Hugh R. "Ned" McCallister

Mr. Hugh "Ned" R. McCallister died Thursday,

Nov. 27, 2008, at Southeast Alabama Medical

Center in Dothan. He was 91.

Funeral services for Mr. McCallister will be 3:30

p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Bethel Baptist

Church with the Revs. Ricky Plummer and Wallace

Russell officiating. Interment will follow in Mount

Pleasant FWB Church Cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends at the funeral

home tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the

family requests that donations to the Bethel Building

Fund or one's favorite charity in his honor.

Mr. McCallister, the son of the late James Curtis

and Mae McCallister, was born in Houston County

on April 26, 1917. He was a life long resident of

Dothan and was a decorated veteran, serving in the

U.S. Army during WWII as a medic. He was a

farmer and carpenter by trade and loved playing the

guitar, harmonica and piano. Mr. McCallister was a

member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he was a

Sunday School Teacher.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Charlie

McCallister, Buford McCallister, Roy McCallister,

Russell McCallister; sister, Betty Jo Aman; son-inlaw,

Robin Burdeshaw.

Mr. McCallister leaves behind to cherish his

memories his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Sewell

McCallister; children, Danny McCallister (Cheryl)

Lorrie Morrison (Donald), Nancy Watson (Dave),

Kathy June Burdeshaw; grandchildren, Rachel

Robinson Morgan Robinson , Donald Kane

2005 after Lennie's and Donald's funeral) about his

WWII experience. I looked up unit history, and the

dates and places fit with Jack's recollection.

warfare specialist, said "we kept thinking the Japs were

going to use chemicals, so we were getting ready, but

we never used them."

Trained at Kessler (army air corps?) base in Miss.

Then to shipped Australia then to New Guinea for over

a year, then 'they moved us to Okinawa" where he was

till the end of the war (sept 45)

Jack said he was then shipped home to Vancouver,

Canada, then Eugene, Oregon then back to Kessler,

Miss. Where he found out he had Malaria. All the time

in the pacific, he never got malaria, but must have right

at the end b/c it was diagnosed as soon as he got back

stateside.

While recovering in the Kessler hospital, a friend told

him he was going to U fo A and said, 'come go with

me' Jack replied he didn't have any money to go to

college and the friend told him about he GI Bill where

he could go to college and get paid ($45 per month?).

in New Guinea thought that was "a heck of a deal" and

went to U of A in 1946.

Jack continued on thru Law school and was admitted to

the Alabama bar February 9, 1953
