Isaac Brittingham, born abt 1785/95 probably in South Carolina; died 1848 in Wilcox County, Alabama. He married abt 1820 to Jane _____, born 1790 in South Carolina; died aft Jul 1860 in Alabama.

The earliest record found for the Isaac Brittingham family is the 1830 Census of St. Johns Berkley Parish of Charleston County, South Carolina. This census shows Isaac Brittingham as age 30-40 with 2 males age 5-10 years. One female (obviously his wife Jane), age 30-40 and 1 female age 10-15.

The exact date the Brittingham family moved to Wilcox County, Alabama has not been determined, but Land Certificates issued by the Old Cahaba Land Office confirms that Isaac Brittingham acquired land in Wilcox County as early as January, 1833. Isaac Brittingham was an active member of the Gravel Creek Baptist Church which was located in the Gravel Creek Community near the cemetery. The Bethlehem Baptist Association Minutes (1827-1967 and Beckbe Association Minutes 1826 (The Bethlehem Association was known as the Beckbe Association until 1827). In 1846 Isaac Brittenham (sic) and his neighbor Rob't Henderson were elected as Messengers {Delegates} of the Gravel Creek Church.

I Isaac Brittingham do publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking all others. First – I desire my body decently intered. Secondly I desire all my just debts to be paid. Thirdly My will and desire is that what property may be left after the payment of my just debts shall remain together during my wife’s life time and used for the benefit and support of my wife Jane my Daughter Nancy Ann and my son Isaac Monroe Brittingham. After the death of my wife Jane I will that my daughter Nancy Ann have a Negro boy name Sam a Negro girl name Betsy and a Negro girl named Hester and in the meantime I desire that my daughter Nancy shall support and raise the above named Negro children until they become old enough to work for themselves. The remainder of my Negro property at the death of my wife I do give to my son Isaac Monroe except a Negro woman named Hannah. I desire that Hannah may be at liberty to choose whether she will belong to my daughter Nancy Ann or my son Isaac Monroe. All my real estate I hereby devise to my son Isaac Monroe. And my personal property not above disposed of I desire shall be equally divided between my daughter Nancy Ann and my son Isaac Monroe. The division of property herein provided for consisting of Negroes lands and cattle hogs farming tools household and kitchen furniture is not to take place till after the death of my wife but to be kept together for the common benefit of the family.
I hereby appoint James T. Johnson and my son Isaac Monroe my executors.

It is interesting to note that the Will did not mention John J. Brittingham, the son of Isaac Brittingham. It is assumed that John's share of the inheritance was distributed at the time of the sale of the 40 acres to Robert Henderson 27 Nov 1839 as noted in the Deeds listed above.

Johnson who has heretofore applied for letters of testamentary on the last will and testament of Isaac Brittingham dec’d and withdraws his application for such letters and therefore Moves the Court to admit to probate the last will and testament of the said Isaaac Brittingham dec’d lately of said County. And it appearing to the Satisfaction of the Court now here that a Citation has issued and been served upon Jane Brittingham the widow, Isaac M Brittingham and Nancy Ann Brittingham who were all of full age being the only persons who would be entitled to distribution in said Estate in Case the said Isaac Brittingham had died intestate, to appear and show Cause why the same should not be admitted to probate and letters issue thereon. Thereupon I have Caused to Come before me on this day L. M. Henry, T. M. Cree and James Cree subscribing witnesses to said Will, who being each duly sworn say that they were each present on the day when said Will purported to have been signed by the said Isaac Brittingham, that the said signature to said Will was signed acknowledged by said Isaac Brittingham in the presence severally to be his signature and that he signed published and disclosed the same to be his last will and testament and they signed their names thereto as witnesses in presence of the said testator and at his request. And that the said testator was at the time of signing the same of sound and disposing Mind and of the age of twenty one years. Be it remembered that on this day before the Probate Court of Wilcox County personally appeared Joseph Van De Vourt Admr with the will annexed of Isaac Brittingham decd as also appeared Jane Brittingham wife of the said Isaac and Seymore Garner Nancy his wife and Isaac M. Brittingham being the only Heirs and legatees under the will, of the said Isaac Brittingham decd, and who are all of full age. And the said Joseph Van De Vourt Admr as aforesaid having at a previous term of this Court filed an account between himself and said Estate together with such vouchers and written evidences as he relies on to sustain the credit side of said account for a final settlement of said Estate to be had at the present term of this Court, and prays the Court now here to audit and examine said account and to state the same and render a decree thereon. And it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court by proof duly made that 40 days notice of the time and place fixed for this settlement previous to this day had been duly given by advertisement for three consecutive weeks in the “Sentinel” a newspaper published in Wilcox County, that all persons concerned in adverse interest might appear on this day and contest said Settlement if they thought proper. The Court thereupon proceeded to examine said account and it appears from such examination that the said Joseph Van De Vourt Admr as aforesaid is chargeable with the sum of Four Hundred and Ninety 93/100 Dollars, and entitled to credits to the amount of Two Hundred and Nine 48/100 Dollars leaving a balance in the hand of said Administrator due said Estate of Two Hundred and Eighty one 85/100 Dollars. It is therefore ordered by the Court that said account so stated as aforesaid be allowed and that it be recorded. It is further ordered that the said Joseph Van De Vourt Admr as aforesaid proceed to make distribution of the said balance so found due of Two Hundred and Eighty one 85/100 Dollars among those entitled thereto in manner and form following to Wit; that is to say –

To Jane Brittingham wife of the said Isaac decd the sum of Ninety three 95/100 Dollars which is hereby assessed and decreed as her distributive share of said Estate and which the said Joseph Van De Vourt is decreed to pay over to her and for which Execution may issue c.

Jane Brittingham, the widow of Isaac, is found enumerated on the 1850 Census in the household of her son-in-law Samuel Seymore Garner. Nancy Ann Brittingham [daughter of Isaac Jane Brittingham] married Samuel Seymore Garner between the time the Will was probated 16 Aug 1848 and the time of final settlement 16 Dec 1850. The exact date of death for Jane Brittingham has not been determined. She died after the July 1860 Census as she was enumerated as head of household and living alone at that time.

+ 3 ii Isaac Monroe2 Brittingham, born 1823 in South Carolina; died btwn 23 Nov 1863-30 Apr 1864 in Tennessee while serving in the CSA during War Between the States. He married Sarah Catherine Henderson.
+ 4 iii Nancy Ann2 Brittingham, born 1827 in South Carolina; died btwn 1850-Jul 1860 in Wilcox Co., Alabama. She married Samuel Seymore Garner.

Generation 2

2. John J2 Brittingham (Isaac1), born 1820/25 in South Carolina; and apparently died bef 1870. He married abt 1861 in Alabama to Elizabeth Ferguson, born 1845 in Alabama. She was the daughter of William Elizabeth Ferguson.

Isaac's son John left the Gravel Creek area and moved to Lower Peach Tree and Choctaw Point and married Elizabeth Furgerson and they had one son named William and they have settled in Owassa, Alabama. This information regarding John Brittingham was furnished by his grandson, William Brittingham [then age 79] and lived in Owassa, Alabama. [Ref: The Brittingham Family From 1830-1976 by Euphemia R. Taylor, dated Nov. 1976].

At time of the 1870 Census of Clarke Co., Alabama, Elizabeth (Ferguson) Brittingham [age 24] and son William [age 8] were enumerated in the household of her parents, William and Elizabeth Ferguson. Since John J. Brittingham was not included, it appears that he had died sometime during the time between the birth of his son William [b. 1862] and the 1870 Census. Since this was the time of the War Between the States, it appears possible that John J. Brittingham may have served in the war and if so may not have survived. However, this possibility has not yet been confirmed.

The widow, Elizabeth (Ferguson) Brittingham and the son William moved to Conecuh Co., Alabama prior to the 1880 Census. On that census, Elizabeth and William [then age 18] were engaged in farming at Fork of Sepulga. Descendants are later found living at Owassa, Conecuh Co., Alabama.

3. Isaac Monroe2 Brittingham (Isaac1), born 1823 in South Carolina; died btwn 23 Nov 1863-30 Apr 1864 in Tennessee while service in the CSA during the War Between the States. He married abt 1846 in Alabama to Sarah Catherine Henderson, born 14 Oct 1832 in Camden, Wilcox, Alabama; died 5 Mar 1905; buried in Friendship Cem, Pineapple, Wilcox, Alabama, daughter of Robert Henderson and Elizabeth McCowan.

Isaac Monroe Brittingham was a veteran of the War Between the States. He enlisted in the Wilcox County State Militia that was known as "The Belle Rifles." His brother-in-law, William R. Rayburn, was also a member of the same militia unit. After the commencement of the War Between the States, most of the Alabama state militia units were made a part of the Confederate States Army. The Belle Rifles militia unit was made a part of Company H, 38th Ala Inf Regmt CSA. Both Isaac Monroe Brittingham and William R. Rayburn served in Company "H", 38th Alabama Infantry Regiment and both men died during that war. In her book "Men of Wilcox, They Wore The Gray" by Ouida Starr Woodson, she indicated that Monroe Brittenham died in Civil War in 1863 in Tennessee.

A family tradition story exists that Isaac Monroe Brittingham was killed in a powder house explosion in Mobile, Ala. and is supposed to be buried at Mobile. However, that is in conflict with the Military Record of Issac M. Brittingham on file in the National Archives at Washington, D.C. It is also in conflict with the Alabama Special 1866 Census. The National Archives indicates that he was on the Muster Roll of Flewellen Hospital, Cassville, Georgia from July 1 to Oct 31, 1863. That he received at Montgomery 23 Nov 1863 from The Confederate States $9.90 for commutation of Rations while on sick Furlough from Nov 21 to Dec 20th inclusive. His file does not indicate he returned to military duty. The Alabama Special 1866 Census, Schedule 1, page 19, listed the Brittingham family and indicated he had "died of sickness."

It is interesting to note that Isaac Monroe Brittingham was on the muster roll of Flewellen Hospital, Cassville, Georgia from July to October 1863. His brother-in-law William R. Rayburn died at this same Flewellen Hospital on 9 December 1863 per his Military Record.

The date of death for Isaac Monroe Brittingham is calculated to be between 23 Nov 1863 and 30 Apr 1864. This date established since Isaac Monroe Brittingham was last paid on 23 Nov 1863 and his widow, Sarah Brittingham, filed for Benefits of deceased soldier on 30 Apr 1864.

After the death of Isaac Monroe Brittingham, his widow, Sarah Catherine (Henderson) Brittingham married 25 April 1869 near Camden by Wm. Huff, to William Calvin Brooks. Four children were born of her marriage to William Calvin Brooks.

After the death of William Calvin Brooks, Sarah Catherine filed for a pension based on W. C. Brooks' Indian Wars military service. Her pension application was rejected, but some vital genealogical details and dates are provided. It is noted that her application indicated her previous husband [Isaac Monroe Brittingham] had died in 1865, but this is in error as she filed for her deceased husbands benefits in April 1864.

The soldier and Sarah C. Brooks were married near Camden, Alabama on 25 April 1869 by Wm. Huff. Her previous husband died 1865.
Previous wife of the soldier died in 1868.
At the time of entering service, the soldier was 21 years of age, 5'9" tall, and had dark eyes, black hair, dark complexion, was a farmer. He was born in Conecuh County, Alabama.
