The Bradford, Gardner, and Baker families were in Greene County
as early as 1825 coming from Kershaw District, SC. Many family
members moved into Pickens County, moving into the Bethany
Community. There are many descendants in Greene and Pickens. This
family information is taken from Bradford Roots and Branches, by
Nancy Jacob, 1975.
Thomas Ingram Bradford, born Dec. 17, 1818, died Feb. 15, 1884,
believed to be the son of Samuel Bradford and Mary Ingram, married
Henrietta Hines, born Aug. 3, 1851 and died Oct. 4, 1904. Both are
buried at Pickensville in Pickens Co. Their children were:
1. Kitty Estelle Bradford, born July 22, 1873 and died Nov. 23,
1899, married S. L. Youngblood. They are buried in Pickensville
Cemetery.
2. Nancy Elizabeth Bradford.
3. Samuel Thomas Bradford
4. Ida Bradford. Buried in Pickensville Cemetery.
5. Lydia Bradford, born March 15, 1792, died Dec. 7, 1860, was the
fifth child of Thomas Bradford and Martha Miller. Lydia Bradford
married in Kershaw Co., SC ca. 1816 to Reuben Gardner, born Dec. 9,
1790 and died Jan. 12, 1843. He was the son of Thomas Gardner and
Eliza Henard. Lydia and Reuben are buried in Bethany Cemetery in
Pickens Co.
Reuben Gardner was listed as a private on the Muster Roll Dec. 7,
1814 at Camp Hadrill under Capt. Chapman Levy's Company of Riflemen
that was one of two companies who were enlisted in and around
Camden, SC for defense in the War of 1812.
Thomas Bradford gave his daughter, Lydia Bradford Gardner a slave
July 15, 1825, in Greene Co., AL. Reuben Gardner served as acting
Justice of Peace in Pickens Co. 1833.
Children of Lydia Bradford and Reuben Gardner were:
1. Jane Gardner, born Oct. 1, 1816, md. Sept. 22, 1836 to D.W. Hood,
born 1811.
2. Thomas Bradford Gardner, born Jan. 30, 1818, died Nov. 15, 1869.
Married (1) Emma Caroline Lanier in 1849. She was born Jan. 3, 1831
in York Co., SC and died Aug. 17, 1852 and (2) Mary Jane Baker.
3. Amelia Elizabeth (Betsy) Gardner, born Feb. 6, 1820 and died July
18, 1892. Married (1) Dr. John Gillespie on Jan. 20, 1842 and (2)
James Duke.
4. John J. Gardner (twin of Betsy), born Feb. 6, 1820 and died Feb.
21, 1914. Married Emily Baker on Jan. 27, 1857.
5. Martha Gardner, born Jan. 12, 1822. Married Jan. 6, 1845 to Jim
Clinton. She died young; Negroes killed him, left 2 or 3 small
children.
6. Amanda Gardner, born Feb. 17, 1824, died July 1, 1849(?). Married
L. B. Stephenson. He married (2) Sarah Haile.
7. Mary Gardner, born Dec. 15, 1825. Married a Mr. Mabry.
8. Dr. David Gardner, born Nov. 15, 1827. Died June 14, 1871. Buried
at Bethany Cemetery in Pickens Co AL.
Thomas Gardner, born ca. 1750 and died Nov. 1815, married
Eliza Kenard. They lived in Kershaw District SC. Their children
were:
1. Thomas Gardner, Jr.
2. William Gardner
3. George Gardner
4. Daniel Gardner, born Dec. 5, 1785 and died Jan. 12, 1872. Married
Elizabeth Taylor, daughter of Meredith Taylor, a Rev. Soldier of
Fairfield Co., SC.
5. James Gardner, born 1787. died 1843.
6. Millie (or Amelia) Gardner. Married John Bell.
7. Reuben Gardner, born Dec. 9, 1790 and died Jan. 12, 1843. Married
Lydia Bradford. They are buried at Bethany Cemetery in Pickens Co.
