“The Wilcox County Kennedys were two first cousins who came in the 1840s, and one branch had a large family, with descendants still in the area. The other, David Kennedy, had only two daughters, who went back to SC after the Civil War, and raised their families there.

Thomas Kennedy, son of William, grandson of Thomas, Sr., also called in my book as "Thomas of Wilcox", was born in 1798, in Darlington or Sumter County, South Carolina. His modern gravestone in Wilcox County, Alabama shows a middle initial of M., but no one in the family knows if this is accurate. He was married first to a woman named Ann, in South Carolina. Ann and Thomas moved first to Florida, then to Monroe County, Alabama in 1839. Somewhere along the way, they had a son, and, then, shortly afterwards, Ann died. Thomas was unable to care for the son, and left him with relatives, possibly in Tennessee.

Later, on 18 May 1843, he married in Wilcox County, to Martha Elizabeth Pilkington, who had come to Wilcox County in 1835 from Marion District, South Carolina, with her parents, Elizabeth McCown and Dura Pilkington, Jr. Martha and Thomas lived in the area of Bell's Landing in Monroe County, where Thomas was said to have been a farmer and Presbyterian minister at the Bell's Landing Church. About 1851, they moved to Wilcox County, at Black's Bend, now known as Coy, where he owned Kennedy's Landing, on the Alabama River.

David Kennedy, son of Thomas Kennedy, Jr., became a prominent citizen of Wilcox County, Alabama, after emigrating there about 1840. He was proud of his Darlington roots, listing his birthplace on his tombstone, being born 23 May 1805. His first wife was Mrs. Sarah Warburton, who was born 3 May 1815, near Black River, in Sumter District. She died 11 July 1855. David married secondly, Sarah Isabella McDowell, the eighth child of Frances McCown and William McDowell, Jr., of Darlington District. Sarah Isabella McDowell Kennedy died 19 April 1874; David died 6 January 1878. All three are buried in what is now known as the Capell Cemetery, in Wilcox County. The land for the cemetery was donated by David Kennedy, but it and the surrounding lands were later sold to the Capell family, hence its name. Also buried there is David's brother, Samuel, who died 7 October 1840, just following their arrival in Wilcox County.”

"Thomas Kennedy came into South Alabama about 1839 from the Sumter District of South Carolina. He was a widower and about 41 years old when he arrived in Monroe Co., Alabama. Thomas was the son of William Kennedy and Ann Muldrow of the Sumter District, South Carolina and the grandson of Thomas Kennedy of the Darlington District, South Carolina.  It is thought he came here with his cousins the Muldrows, who also settled in Monroe and Wilcox counties. We do not know the name of Thomas' first wife, but it was family legend that she died en route to Alabama and their small child was left with relatives in Tennessee. He married second Martha Elizabeth Pilkington in Wilcox County on May 18, 1843. Martha was a daughter of Dura Pilkington and Elizabeth McCowin, who came to Wilcox County from the Marion District, SC in 1835. (Dura Pilkington was a large landowner on the east side of Camden. The family cemetery is located on Betty Kennedy's land.) Thomas and Martha made their home first at Bell's Landing in Monroe County. Family legend is that Thomas was a Presbyterian Minister at the Bell's Landing Church. Here Thomas and Martha began raising their family.

     In 1850 they moved across the county line into Wilcox County to a place called Blacks Bend (Coy). Here Thomas farmed cotton and shipped it down river from Kennedy's Landing. His plantation was located next to the present Coy Cemetery. It was a grand two-story home which burned in the 1870's.  Thomas & Martha had eleven children.   ........  After the War, times were indeed hard for the Kennedy's. According to legend, in 1869 Thomas Sr., Thomas Jr. and his sister Ann all died within a few days of each other with typhoid fever.  They are buried at the Coy Cemetery.........  She [Martha] eventually sold the plantation to David Kennedy, a cousin of her husband, and moved to Bellview. William Oliver Kennedy was b. 14 Apr 1848, Wilcox Co., Alabama; d. 28 Jul 1928 at Midlothian, Ellis County,

Texas. He served in War Between the States as member of Company I, 3rd Alabama Calvary. He was wounded

and captured at Missionary Ridge near end of war. He was imprisoned at Rock Island, Illinois.  Accused of

murder, William left Wilcox County with John, his brother for Texas. He was later exonerated of the charges

when the real murderer confessed to the crime. Since the family was able to locate him, William never knew.

Worked for a textile mill, probably as a mechanic, as he was listed in the 1880 Census. He was listed as William

Oliver on the 1880 Census. Buried in the Midothian Memorial Cemetery in Midothian, Ellis County, TX. Married

Laura Jane Rebecca Storey in 1877 in Presbyterian Church in Wesson, Mississippi. Residence 1880 Census –

COMMENT:  It appears that the enumerator made errors in listing children as adopted daughter Sarah Isabella would be about age 30 at time of this census and daughters Sarah Frances and Elizabeth Carolina should both be under age 10.  It appears that the enumerator may have omitted adopted dau Sarah Isabella's name but showed her age for dau Sarah Frances. Pg 8 & 207 - David Kennedy and Henry Kaster, owned a Camden Mercantile Store.  David Kennedy was a partner but Henry Kaster did the operation of the store. The business was in a brick building that is now [2002] occupied by Albritton's Flower Shop. Henry Kaster died 20 August 1878, the same year that David Kennedy died.

COMMENT:  The Will of both David Kennedy and his wife Sarah Isabella Kennedy indicate names of the two

daughters as (1) Sarah Frances and (2) Elizabeth Caroline.   The above Guardian Bond indicates names as Sarah

Frances and Isabella Caroline.  Since both parents indicated the name to be Elizabeth Caroline it is concluded that

the showing of the name here as Isabella Caroline is in error. EDR

Notes for William McDaniel "Mack" Reaves

William McDaniel Reaves, Sr. born November 15th, 1844 in Nellie, Alabama, was the son of James Leon and Sarah S. Vinson Reaves, of English-Irish descent. He was a farmer, member of Reaves Chapel Methodist Church and a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted in the Confederate Army on November 25th, 1862, at Choctaw Bluff,  Alabama, and served as courier with Company F, Baldwin Rifles, 21st Alabama Regiment. He was captured at  Fort Gaines in Mobile, Alabama, held prisoner on Ship Island off the coast of Biloxi, Mississippi, and was exchanged at Meridian, Mississippi on April 1865. Family legend is that he walked every mile of the way from Meridian to Nellie, Alabama. He died February 12th, 1928, age 85 at home and was buried in Reaves Chapel Cemetery, Reaves Chapel Road, Camden, Alabama. His grave is marked with a Confederate stone.

He married Harriett Frances Kennedy on January 25th, 1882, at her home in Nellie, Alabama. She was born January 12th, 1855 in Blacks Bend (Coy), Alabama, and died April 15th, 1934, age 79 and was buried in Reaves Chapel Cemetery. She was the daughter of Thomas Lee and Martha Elizabeth Pilkington Kennedy. Thomas Lee Kennedy was born in Sumter County, South Carolina, son of William and Ann Muldrow Kennedy of Scot-Irish descent. He came to Alabama in 1840, first settling near Bells Landing in Monroe County, Alabama, then moved to Blacks Bend (Coy), Alabama in 1850. Martha Elizabeth Pilkington was born in Marion District, South Carolina, came to Alabama in 1839 with her parents, John Dura (Drury) and Elizabeth McCown Pilkington. Six children were born to William and Harriett Frances Kennedy Reaves: Frances Emma, Harriett Issie, James Thomas, William McDaniel, Jr., Sarah Martha, and Minnie Lee.

"Confederate Veteran Answers Last Roll Call"

Mr. W. M. Reaves of Sedan died at home last Sunday, February 12, and was buried at Reaves Chapel Cemetery on Monday. Mr. Reaves was a Confederate Veteran. Democrat of the old school; a successful farmer, and a loyal citizen. Though he was above eighty years of age, he led an active life until recently. Mr. Reaves leaves a large family connection and a host of friends throughout the county. The Era extends sympathy to the bereaved ones.

"In Memory"

Another veteran has answered the last roll call. Early Sunday morning, February 12, 1928 just as the sun was coming over the eastern horizon, the spirit of Mr. Mack Reaves took its flight to the God who gave it. He had been in declining health for some months and his death was not unexpected. He bore his afflictions with much patience and fortitude, and when the spirit left the body it was as quiet as the passing of a shadow.

His sweet, affectionate wife who never left his bedside, was not aware of the change until she looked into his palid face. His calm and placid look showed signs of peacefulness and resignation. He was never heard to utter one word of complaint, and once in his delirium he talked of the Resurrection.

This venerable man had reached the age of 83 years. He served in the Civil War in the 21st Alabama Division and after the war closed he returned home and married Miss Hattie Kennedy. To them were born six children--two boys and four girls. One son, Bill gave his life for his county's sake during the World War. His wife and other children and several grandchildren survive him. He was a successful farmer and loved the freedom and enchantment of country life. Fox hunting was one of his much-loved sports and, until his weakened vitality prevented it, he called himself "one of the boys" and frequently indulged in it. Honest was his policy and this was evidenced in his daily life and attitude toward all mankind. He belonged to the household of faith, professing Jesus in early life, and was a consistent member of Reaves Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church South.

His body was laid to rest in Reaves Chapel Cemetery to await the Resurrection Morn, and to our beloved friend we do not say goodbye, but rather good morning, for we know that he shall live again. Death's wicked hand turns joyful days into sorrow but the burden-bearer helps to bear the sorrows: and  we point the bereaved ones to our beloved apostle's own words. "As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive."

February 18, 1890; son of William McDaniel and Harriett Frances Kennedy Reaves. Not married. Volunteered for

Service World War I. Killed in Battle of Argonne Forest France Oct. 11, 1918)

the 38th Infantry, Machine Gun Company, World War I, was killed October 11, 1918 in the Battle of Argonne

Forest, France. His parents, William McDaniel Sr., and Harriett Frances Kennedy Reaves received notice of his

death from the War Department November 25, 1918. The news of this death came at a time when all were

rejoicing over the termination of the conflict. His body was returned to his home on September 19, 1921, sent

from Hoboken and accompanied by a private in the U.S. Army. The remains were met by his aged father, now in

his 76th year, a Confederate Veteran of the 21st Alabama Infantry from 1862 to 1865, also by his brother, James

"Jim Tom" Reaves and other relatives and friends. The flag shrouded casket was conveyed to Reaves Chapel

Cemetery, Reaves Chapel Road, Camden, Alabama, and in this very hallowed cemetery, the funeral was

conducted on September 22, 1921, and his pastor Rev. Gafford officiated.  Here the gallant young soldier was laid

to rest near where he was born among family and friends.

(William McDaniel Reaves, Jr.) body was brought back to the home of my grandparents, William McDaniel, Sr.

and Harriett Frances Kennedy Reaves for burial. My mother, Frances Emma Reaves (Mrs. John Godfrey

Lambrecht) was his sister, and I accompanied by parents and six brothers and sisters-James Albert, Henry

Winfred, Godfrey McDaniel "Mack", Harriett Mary "Hattie Mae", Julia Aline, and Annette Naomi, the baby of

the family then, to Grandpa and Grandma's home for the funeral. I can remember Grandpa Mack walking up and

down the driveway by the house trailed by most of us grandchildren and several of the older family members and

friends. He was very stooped, almost to his knees, and his hands locked behind his back. His back was injured

during the time he was held prisoner during the Civil War on Ship Island off the coast of Biloxi, Mississippi. I

recall that some of the adults said, "Papa, are you going to open the casket?"  No, he replied, we can't do that. If

that is not Bill's body in there, I couldn't stand it, and I know it would kill Hattie and you children." "I can still see

the flag over the casket, with the young private in his uniform saluting during the military funeral."

makes Supreme Sacrifice Mr. W. M. Reaves of Camden, Rt. 3, received notice from the Department of War on

Monday that his son, William, was killed in action on October 11. The news of this death comes at a time when

all are rejoicing over the termination of the war, and his parents have the sympathy of all in their sad bereavement.

 He was an industrious boy, kind, consider of everyone, and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him.

Frances Emma Reaves - School Teacher, Methodist

Frances Emma Reaves was born April 10th, 1883, Nellie, Alabama, the daughter of William McDaniel and Harriett Frances Kennedy Reaves. She attended Reaves Chapel School, and was a member of Reaves Chapel Methodist Church. She attended college at Montevallo, Alabama and then returned home and taught in Reaves Chapel School until she married. She married John D. Godfrey Lambrecht, Jr. of Blacks Bluff (Coy), Alabama on January 23rd 1907, at home in Nellie, Alabama. He was the son of John Godfrey Sr. and Mary LaMarie "Mollie" Laffler Lambrecht. She died May 4th, 1943 at home in Coy, Alabama and was buried in Reaves Chapel Cemetery, Reaves Chapel Road, Camden, Alabama.

Nine children were born to this couple: James Albert, Henry Winfred, Godfrey McDaniel, Harriett Mary "Hattie Mae", Florence Emma, Julia Aline, Annette Naomi, John Thomas, and Issie Lee "Doll" Lambrecht.

Reaves-Thompson Wedding

On Friday Evening at 6:00 o'clock, December 26, 1917, Miss Issie Reaves and Mr. Samuel Ross Thompson, Jr. were joined in the holy bonds of Matrimony. The wedding took place at Reaves Chapel Church, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion with Southern Smilax, candles and ferns.

The bride and groom and their attendants, viz: Miss Mattie Reaves and Howard Vaughn, Miss Clara Thompson and James Tom Reaves, Miss Pearl Thompson and Chester Farish and Miss Karen Loftin and Robert Kennedy entered the church while Lohengrin's Wedding March was played by Miss Edge.

A short, but impressive ceremony, was performed by Rev. Strout of Camden, Alabama. The bride never looked more beautiful than in her wedding gown of satin and georgette crepe. She carried a bouquet of white roses tied with dainty white ribbon. The bridesmaids wore white-gap silk dresses with light blue sashes. Immediately after the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Thompson left for the home of Mrs. M. D. McIntosh, where they will reside.

James Thomas "Jim Tom" Reaves was born on September 17th 1887 in Nellie, Alabama. He was the son of William McDaniel and Harriett Frances Kennedy Reaves. He attended Reaves Chapel School, school in Mobile, Alabama, where he received training as a bookkeeper, which profession he followed for a number of years. He returned home to assist in caring for his aged and ill parents. He was a member of Reaves Chapel Methodist Church. He was a farmer, very successful and productive, and several of his sons have followed in this enterprise. He married Martha Rebecca Knight on June 9, 1918. She was born on February 8th, 1902, the daughter of James Claude and Zella Elizabeth Peavy Knight. She died on April 11th, 1973 and was buried in Reves Chapel Cemetery, Reaves Chapel Road, Camden, Alabama. "Jim Bob" Reaves died November 25th, 1961 and was buried in Reaves Chapel Cemetery.

Jim Tom and Martha Reaves had twelve children: James Thomas "J. T.", Billie Mack, Steven Edicon, Charles Rogers, Frances Elizabeth, Labon Oram, Willard Savage, Doris Ione, Marjorie Delano, Fabris Rebecca, Linda Sue and Douglas.

She married James Collie McIntosh on May 10th, 1914 in Camden, Alabama. He was born on June 5, 1890, the son of James Columbus "Beecher" and Millie Nettles McIntosh. He died on February 19, 1978, and was buried in Reaves Chapel Cemetery. After her marriage, she joined the Morman Church with her husband Collie.
