The shield, or Armorial Coat, has shepherd's crooks crossed on a screenlike dark background. Black for constancy, croziers for church authority.... The upper one-third is The Chief and the curved line the Chevron. So placed and illuminated in silver it signifies authority granted as a special reward for prudence, also successful command in great emergencies.
In The Crest the crook and sword repeat the St. Andrew's cross design and indicate both church responsibility and same success in scaling the walls of towns...."In Deo Confido," I Trust in God."
