Hugh Chick is the son of Harry and Ruth Chick born in 1924. He was a member of A Co 298th Combat Engineer BN and was captured the night of 6-7 AUG 1944 outside Mortain, France. According to my father the night was very foggy and it was close to 3 am when the convoy he was in ran into a German panzer column. My Father's vehicle was blown into a ditch and shortly after exiting the vehicle my father was shot through the shoulder which caused him to scream leading to his time as a POW. My father escaped from Stalag IIIC, outside present Kostrzyn, Poland 28 JAN, 1945 and made his way to Odessa, Russia where he was repatriated via a British hospital ship. Upon returning to the States my father returned to work as a conductor with the Burlington Northern Railroad. He married Etta Auer 10 MAR 1973 and had two sons Robert and Stephen Chick. My father retired from the railroad about 1981 after a long bout with illnesses caused by his time as a POW. My father passed away 7 AUG 1990 46 years to the day after being taken as a POW. He is survived by his wife Etta Chick-Oros; sons Robert spouse Gloria, and Stephen who had two children Myles and Briana Chick. I joined the Army 28 JAN 1992 47 years to the day after my Father escaped from Stalag IIIC and had the chance to visit the site where he was held in 2002. Stephen also joined the Army and was assigned to the 298th Combat Engineer BN 1994-1997 in Bamberg Germany.
