According to his granddaughter:
My grandfather died at age 54 of type 1 diabetes that he had since retuning from the war in 1945. He died April 13th 1982. He lied about his age and was just 15 when he enlisted!!! If he was captured on DDay, then he was just 16 when captured. He returned to Mifflin County PA and had 4 children including my Dad, with his wife Jackie.
