King Family History

Owen King 1796-1882

Owen King was born about 1796 in County Down, Ireland. About 1825 he married Mary Anne Maginn (another source has Macklin for her name). They had at least 4 children: Edward, born about 1826; Michael, born about 1828; Isabella, born about 1831 and Patrick, born in 1833.

In 1847 Owen and the children left Ireland and emigrated to Canada via Boston, according to family legend. Mary Anne Maginn, either did not make the trip or died en route.

According to the obituary of Michael King they lived for a time in Chinquacousy Township in Peel County and then moved to Culross after the Great Land Sale of 1854. However, the first document recording the Kings' presence in Canada is the 1851-2 Census in which the Kings were enumerated in Caledon Township.

The four children listed are Edward, Michael, Patrick and Elisabeth. Presumably Elisabeth and Isabella are the same person (Isabella being the Spanish version of Elisabeth), but we will likely never know. Michaels King's obituary mentions two daughters, but only one by name.

Unfortunately we do not know exactly where they were living; the agricultural census which would have contained this information has been lost. However by comparing the 1851 Census with a commercial directory published in 1850 it appears that they were living near Lot 18 of the 6th Concession EHS (east of Hurontario Street - now Highway 10) in Caledon Township. This is on the west side of Airport Road about 4km south of the village of Mono Mills.

While they were in Peel County, 3 of the children met their future spouses. Edward married Annie Brophy who with her family came from County Tipperary to Toronto Gore Township about 1833. Michael married Jane Cartwright who was born on Lot 25 Con 3 EHS of Chinquacousy Township (now know as Dixie Road - lot 25 is about 1 km south of the King Sideroad). Isabella married Michael Donnelly who was living in Albion Township, perhaps near the village of Bolton.
