"COLUMN ONE"
By Mary Mayo, Editor, "Jenks Journal"

Introduction: By Susan Mayo-Strain

Jenks, Oklahoma, forty years ago. A slower, more intimate time for everyone, and especially those who were blessed to be living in a small town like Jenks. Grocery stores were "Mom & Pop" establishments. Dry cleaners, cafes, drug stores, furniture and hardware stores, all were run by entire families, from the oldest to the youngest.

During the early sixties, a very young "Jenks Journal" asked my mother, Mary Mayo, to become its editor. Momma, who wanted not only to put her writing talents to work after so many years of raising children, but also to become more involved in the workings of the town, took on that position for the newspaper, and also became the Town Clerk of Jenks.

Although she only edited and wrote for the newspaper for a couple of years, her "Column One", a weekly "visit" with her subscribers, was looked upon as freshly informative, always interesting, and well worth the nickle that the weekly cost then!

I am presenting all of the "Column One" articles I have. Some are just fun. Others are intended to build civic pride. But all hold some history of the town I love, and can help paint a picture of what it was like to live in Jenks America forty years ago!

Thank you, Momma. You are still my inspiration. I miss you so much.
