Notes for JAMES PATTERSON HOLLEY:

Holley's were originally from Wales. They are from the states of North and South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky and Texas, and were of English, Dutch and Irish descent. The state of Texas has the largest number of Holley's residing there than any other state in the U.S.

James Patterson Holley, Mary Elizabeth Young and their seven children, Cuddy, John, Minnie, Lou Belle, Jim, Add, and Sammy migrated to Texas from Kentucky in the year 1887. James's wife Elizabeth was only thirty years old at the time. What an experience that must have been for the whole family. It was the first train ride for all but James, and the stories they told must have come straight out of " Slow Train Through Arkansas". Some of the stories may have become enhance over the years, and some may be sheer imagination, but they are worth telling.

One story concerns Minnie an Lou Belle, the only daughters. They sat quietly on the train with wet handkerchiefs over their noses to filter out the smoke from the coal fired engine, when a man came through the car selling bananas. Minnie and Lou Belle each bought one, having no idea what they were, having never seen one before. After a while, Lou Belle decided to try a bite, just after her first bite the train went into a tunnel, when the train came out of the tunnel, Minnie decided to eat hers, Lou Belle immediately advised her not to eat, " I took a bite of mine and went stone blind for a few minutes.

Notes for MARY ELIZABETH YOUNG:

Mary Elizabeth Young Holley could neither read nor write, but she could keep an audience of children spellbound for hours while she sat in a comfortable rocking chair, dipped her snuff with a twig from an elm tree, and told her stories of growing up and moving to Texas. She was happy in her rocking chair, with her snuff box, her little lace hanky and the children at her feet.

James Alfred Holley was the fifth child of James Patterson Holley and Mary Elizabeth Young. At age four he traveled with his family to Texas. A highlight of his life was a trip he took with his father at age seventeen back to Kentucky to visit family. He married Miss Cora Duncan of Enloe, Texas and settled in the Dial Community where he spent his life farming cotton and corn. For recreation he played his guitar at community gatherings. He and Cora were members of the Dial Presbyterian Church. " Jim" died of a heart attack in 1955 and is buried in Dial, Texas.

When James was a schoolboy he had to use "mud pencils" and a slate for his home work. Mud pencils consisted of hand rolled clay to the proper length and dried at the fireplace by the evening fire. When lead pencils became available he treated them as precious items and was very stingy with their use. When each of his children became of school age, they were given a cedar pencil and made to understand that it was to last the whole school term. Cedar pencils sold at the store, two for a nickel.

Jim Holley used to sometimes take his family to East Texas to visit John Hardin Holley whose home was near the little town of Dike, Texas. There was no hassle with, planes, trains, or automobiles, they just hitched up a team of high stepping mules and headed  southeast for a long ride. They would take enough fried chicken, corn on the cobb and fresh tomatoes to last two days. After a couple of days with John and Willie, they would leave for home with enough fresh peaches to make jam and jelly to last all winter.

Few artists have left such a lasting Impact on "Rock and Roll" music. He came out of a country background and grew up to the music of "Western Swing" and "Honky Tonk" music. He performed briefly with with "Western" groups before forming his own group known as "The Crickets". The sound they created was uncluttered and clean, a sound with simplicity, with clean guitar leads, and with drums providing raw energy.

Buddy's family life was very stable and he was very sociable, he was anything but a loner. His songs reflect a happy upbringing, his lyrics centering upon the trials and tribulations of a teenager. Listen to the classics, "Peggy Sue", "Everyday,"  "  "When Will I Be Loved ", "Maybe Baby", and " well Alright", He and his writers captured the teen experience.

Buddy Holly is probably the most talked about and recognized artists of the  "50s". Many performers of today draw from his style, Listen to James Taylor and other soft rock singers. Buddy's style and repertoire can be hear on radio stations and at concerts any day of the year. He may be the most copied artist of all time. He was truly a pioneer in music and his contribution will be everlasting. His great talent came to an end on a rainy night in Iowa, when the private plane in which he was a passenger crashed.
