Notes for HANCE

CUNNINGHAM:
Information from
Russell Cunningham who lives in Birmingham, Alabama states that the Cunningham
family moved from Bedford County, Tennessee to Franklin and Lawrence Counties,
about 1817. This is consistent with information from Debbie Terry Tillman of
Huntington Beach California, Who is the great, great, great grand daughter of Jesse James
Cunningham.
Russell states that
Hance M. was the first sheriff of Lawrence County, Alabama.
Information on children of Hance came from Louis J. Hardwick, a great grandson Of Jesse James. Louis Hardwick's mother was Alice Ann Cunningham, daughter of James Monroe Cunningham (Jesse James Jr.)

1938 in Nashville.Tennessee. He married (2) MARY C. HURLEY abt 1841.
She died in Cooper, Delta County, Texas, Feb. 1880 and is buried in Oaklawn
Cemetery, Cooper. Texas. He Married MATTIE WILCOX Aug. 12, 1880 in Delta
County, Texas.
Notes for JESSE
JAMES
CUNNINGHAM:
Records obtained from the Tennessee State archives
show Jesse as marrying Mary A .E. Williams on November 30, 1838. The
signature on the marriage certificate and the marriage bond are an exact match
to signatures on probate records and land titles showing his signature. His first born
was Nancy Emaline born June 3, 1840, in Moulton, Lauderdale County, Alabama.
Nancy married Wiley C. Nanney in Itawamba Mississippi. Information obtained from
Ronney Nanney of Cedar Hill, Texas states that Nancy's mother was named "Easter", he
does not know if this was a given name or a surname. I am going under the
assumption that the "E" initial in Mary Williams name is Easter.
Nanney believes that Nancy's mother died while Nancy was very Young, In
this case, Jesse married again, and
to Mary C. Hurley. The 1870 census shows Mary C. as being born in Alabama.
Jesse James is found in
the 1840 and 1850 Alabama Census, and in Mississippi census in 1860. The birth
dates, and birth places of his children indicate that he moved to Mississippi
about 1852 or 53.
Jesse James Cunningham entered the
Confederate Army of America in 1861, Company K, 1st Regiment, Mississippi
Volunteers, known as Mississippi Yankee Hunters. Most of the men in this
division were from Itawamba County, they were organized in Corinth, Ms. They
were in the battle of Hopkinsville Kentucky, November 11, 1861.They were at
Bowling Green and Columbia, Kentucky October 8, 1861, they
were captured in the battle of Ft. Danielson, Feb. 16,1862, and held at
Ft. Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana until August of that year . He was captured
again at the battle of Port Hudson, Louisiana on July 9, 1863 and released on
July 13, 1863. Information taken from Confederate Army records, roll #20 sheet
7, and roll # 188, sheet 10. He later joined Featherstones Brigade and took part
in the Georgia campaign and later in the battles of Franklin and Nashville under
General Hood in December of 1864.

Notes for JAMES
MONROE
CUNNINGHAM:
It is believed that
James Monroe Cunningham's full name is Jesse James Monroe Fraser Cunningham, and
that perhaps he is a "Jr",
however, that is uncertain. It is believed he dropped all but James Monroe. He
was a farmer, a carpenter, and a blacksmith, however , farming was his
occupation. Carpentry and Smithing were trades that were a necessity to him. He
taught all his sons carpentry. He owned several farms in Texas, mostly in Delta
and Runnells County, but it is believed he also owned land in Comanche and Milam
Counties as well as in Garza County where his first grandson was born.(
information from Vivian Faye Cunningham Welsh). He died on a farm in Runnells
county during the Christmas Season and was buried in Oaklawn Cemetary in Cooper,
Texas, where he lived when he first came to Texas

James Wesley Thompson was born in Tennessee, and moved to Texas about 1878 when
he was about 14 years old. It is said he left home and came to Texas because his
stepmother beat him. It is quite
likely that James Wesley was part Cherokee, perhaps as much as one-half.
James Wesley died of
heart failure, he was living with his daughter Minnie and her husband Sam. He
had ridden a horse to go see the corn, they found him lying beside a fence post.

Alice Ann Cunningham
Gray died at a very early age. She was just past thirty when she died of
perontitis in a Paris , Texas Hospital. She was a wonderful mother and was much
loved by her children and husband. She was a very beautiful woman, really quite
a fox.
Her daughter, Carrie
Cethel, wrote to one of her daughters "My father kept a picture of my
mother on the table alongside his bed, and kissed it goodnight every night. He
did this even after he remarried". He must have been a wonderful husband.
Alice Ann is buried in
Oaklawn Cemetery next to her mother, father and several brothers, near Cooper,
Texas

was $37.50. Casket #01, size 5/9 and box $27.50, robe $5.00, care of body $5.00.
This information received from Betsy Mills at Lamar County Genealogical Society,

Effie Ambers Gilliam Cunningham and Jesse Henderson Cunningham
Notes for JESSE
HENDERSON
CUNNINGHAM:
Jesse Henderson was a
farmer, a smithy, a carpenter and a devout Christian man. It appears that he
moved his family from Garza county to Abilene about 1934, the "dust
bowl" drought made farming impossible on those high dry plains. He bought a
service station, grocery store in Elmdale, a crossroads community about five
miles east of Abilene. This was an unsuccessful venture and he soon moved to
Abilene and spent the remainder of his life building houses, During the second
world war he was a builder at Camp Barkley, an Army Post that has long since
been torn down, however, at one time it housed twenty thousand soldiers. Jesse
was a well respected member of the community, and a trusty, and deacon in the
Immanuel Baptist Church, then later at the Temple Baptist Church.
Notes for EFFIE
AMBERS GILLIAM
(GILLEM):
Effie Ambers always
spelled her last name Gilliam, however, her brothers used Gillem, and Gillam.
Her father is listed in different census's as Gillem, Gilliam, and Gilliarn. Her
fathers given name was also a controversy, he was sometime Hugh Berry, and some
times Houghberry, and sometimes Hough Berry.
Effie Amber Gilliam was
a good Christian woman and much loved by all who knew her. She was also loved by
many who knew her only by her reputation
as a good samaritan. She was a nurse and always available to anyone in need. She
was the "Mother Teresa" of West
Texas. Her daughter in Law, Vivian Faye Cunningham Welsh says that if she had of
been Catholic, they would have made her a Saint.
In about 1935 or 36,
she provided a home for her sister Mattie's daughter, Tempe Mahota Williams so
that she might attend school in Abilene. Tempe Mahota Williams Sills now lives
with her son Bruce in Rogers, Arkansas.
Effie had to have both
legs amputated in 1940 due to "flesh eating disease". It was an eight
hour operation, she had a spinal block for the surgery, and laughed and kidded
the Doctors during the entire operation. One of the surgeons, Dr. Jack Crowe
says he had never seen such a brave and strong hearted person. She was in a
wheelchair the rest of her life with never a complaint. She continued to do her
own cooking, cleaning, washing and ironing for her family.
According to
information that Mahota got from her grandmother, Effie's mother and father
were both of Indian descent.

Notes for WALTER

Walter always had a
smile on his face and had a chuckle for everyone. He was easy to know and easy
to like, and the firstborn child of Jesse H. Cunningham and Effie A. Gilliam. He
learned farming and other skills from his dad, and farmed for awhile in his
younger days near Lamesa, Texas. He soon followed the rest of the family to
Abilene during the dust bowl, and bought a filling station at fifth and Hickory
St. in Abilene. This proved to be an unprofitable business, and he went into
carpentry for awhile.
In about 1941 he moved
his family to Ft. Worth, Texas when he became a journeyman sheet metal worker in
the defense industry in an aircraft plant. I*n the mid forties he moved his
family to Albuquerque, New Mexico for a few years before moving to La Puente,
California where he remained for the rest of his life.

sometimes drank a lot. He could be a very ugly person when he had had a lot to
drink. In his later years he gave up drinking and became a very mellow and
friendly person. He was easy to make friends with. Marvin served in the US
Marine Corp. for about six months, he was discharged for medical reasons.

Notes for DOROTHY
LORENE
YOUNG:
Dorothy Lorene died in
an automobile accident near Ballinger, a small town a few miles northeast of San
Angelo, Texas on a sunny July afternoon. She was driving, in the car with her
was her younger sister, Burta Lee (Ginger) Caldwell, who was critically injured.
Ginger spent several weeks in intensive care at a San Angelo hospital.
Dorothy's funeral was
held at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home in Abilene. Elliott's has buried many
Cunningham's over the years. She is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in block 115,
lot 5, space 5, not far from her mother and dad, Alburtice T. Young and Minnie
Lee Holley, as well as many other relatives and in laws. She is buried next to a
favorite nephew, Lowell Petifils who was buried there in May of 1998.
After her divorce from
Marvin Cunningham during the second world war, she joined the Women Ordinance
Workers. After her basic training in Cisco , Texas she was sent to Ft. Worth,
Texas and worked in an aircraft factory for awhile. She was later transferred to
Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana, then to Camp Barkley, Texas
near Abilene. She was transferred once more to Ft. Carson, Colorado near
Colorado Springs, where she met and married her second husband, Norman Karas.

He married LYNDELL
NAYDAL
BAKER
June 30, 1935 in Elmdale, near Abilene, Texas.
Notes for VIRGIL
ELMER
CUNNINGHAM:
Virgil was the youngest
son of Jess Cunningham and Effie Gilliam, he was always a happy person and the
"apple" of his mothers eye. He served his country during the second
world war in the combat engineers in the south pacific with the US Army. His
mother always kept a star in her window signaling that she had a son in the
service of our country.
Virgil was a great joke
teller, and always had a story for all his friends, which were quite numerous.
Virgil lived for ten moths after it was determined that he had cancer, he spent
the last 22 days of his life at the VA Medical Center in Big Spring, Texas.
Lyndall, his wife remained in Midland for several years, but was moved to a
nursing home in Abilene to be near her son Leon, and Daughter, Dorothy.
Notes for LYNDELL
NAYDAL
BAKER:
I am unsure of Lyndells
middle name, Nydal or Naydal. Lyndell was a very wonderful woman, a good wife
and a great mother. She was one of Effie Cunningham's favorite daughters in law.
Lyndell remained in Midland after her husband, Virgil's death, she was employed
by Midland Public Schools as a cook. After she retired she fell and broke her
hip and never fully recovered. She spent the remainder of her life in an
Abilene, and was visited daily by her daughter Dorothy, who lives near Abilene.
