A second marriage is given in Schuyler Co IL for a William C. Avery - Mattie Morgan on 21 Sep 1868, but this must not be the same William. In 1870, William's wife in the census is still listed as Nancy. Avery file information indicates only one wife, Nancy, and she outlived William.

Nancy Black Avery 1841-1919

William Clark AVERY and Nancy BLACK were married on 28 February 1861 in Schuyler County, Illinois.38 Nancy BLACK, daughter of Bernard BLACK and Rachel OWENS, was born in December 1841 in Illinois.11 She died on 25 August 1919 at the age of 77 in Beardstown, Cass County, Illinois.22

A copy of her death certificate found on Ancestry.com notes that the informant was Moses Vail. she died of cerebral hemorrhage (a stroke).
