First Generation

1. HANS HEINRICH HOLZKLAU¹ was christened on 26 March 1647 at St. Nicolai Church in Siegen, Germany.² Weidenau is a small village near Siegen. His father was "Johann Holtzclaw of Weidenau" He died in August 1711 in Oberfischbach, Germany.³

He was Christened on Oculi Sunday (March) 1647; his godfather was Hannes from Tieffenbach (an ironworks in the parish of Netphen). In 1664, Hans Henrich was admitted to the Guild of Smelterers and Hammersmiths, but followed in his fathers occupation as a teacher.
In 1711, when he died, his son Jacob was the schoolmaster in Oberfischbach.
Records show that Hans Henrich was the schoolmaster at Trupbach in 1667-1670 and after 1681. From 1671 to 1680 he was the schoolmaster of Krombach, in Nassau-Siegen, Germany. He passed the office to his eldest son, Johannes by 1693.

Always referred to as a schoolmaster. From about 1671 to 1680 they moved from Truppbach (near Weidenau within the Siegen parish) to Krombach where John Henry was schoolmaster. Returned to Truppbach to serve in that position in 1680.

HANS HEINRICH HOLZKLAU and GERTRUDT were married about 1666. GERTRUDT died before 1692.⁴

Often said to have been the Gertrude Solbach baptized 30 Oct 1644, daughter of Johan Solbach & Elisabeth, in Siegen, Westfalen, Prussia, Germany. There is no documentation which relates this infant to the wife of Holzklau. Gertrude being a fairly common German given name, this would be a leap of faith with no documentation. As it is not provable to be the same person, and it has been assumed from this source, without acknowledging the fact that there is no actual marriage licence or written record available, she should not be given this surname.

Died after birth of youngest child in 1683 and before 1692 when the death register at Siegen began.

HANS HEINRICH HOLZKLAU and GERTRUDT had the following children:

3	ii.	Johannes HOLZKLAU⁵ was christened on 4 January 1670 in Trupbach, Germany.⁶ He died in 1707 in Oberfischbach, Germany.⁵ John was a schoolmaster like his father. He married Agnes Catharine Lobericht, daughter of Wilhelm Lobericht, schoolmaster at Oberfischbach. He succeeded his father-in-law as schoolmaster. Buried Jul 24, 1707.
4	iii.	Anna Margaretha HOLZKLAU was christened on 8 April 1672 in Krombach, Germany.⁵ She died on 5 May 1672 in Krombach, Germany.⁵
5	iv.	Christina HOLZKLAU was christened on 16 March 1673 in Evangelisch, Krombach, Westfalen, Prussia.^5,7
6	v.	Johann Hermann HOLZKLAU was christened on 9 August 1674 in Evangelisch, Krombach, Westfalen, Prussia.^5,7
7	vi.	Guetje HOLZKLAU was christened on 20 February 1676 in Krombach, Germany.⁵
8	vii.	Thoeniges\Anton HOLZKLAU was christened on 28 April 1678 in Krombach, Germany.⁵
9	viii.	Caspar HOLZKLAU was christened on 2 November 1679 in Krombach, Germany.⁵ Johan Heinrich and Caspar were twins; christened on Nov. 2 or 7.
10	ix.	Johann Henrich HOLZKLAU was christened on 2 November 1679 in Evangelisch, Krombach, Westfalen, Preußen, Germany.^5,7 Twin of Caspar
11	x.	Clara HOLZKLAU was christened on 10 July 1681 in Evangelisch, Siegen, Westfalen, Prussia.⁵
