Mrs. Lettie Carney
Mrs. Lettie M. Carney, 79, of Fayetteville, died Friday at a local hospital after an extended illness. Born July 26, 1901 in Union Town, the daughter of J. M. and Ellen Wood Comstock, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fayetteville.
Survivors are her husband, Cy Carney Sr of Fayetteville; one son, Cy Carney Jr. of Jacksonville; one daughter Mrs. Kathryn Coatney, of Fayetteville; one brother, Paul Comstock of Van Buren, Ark.; two sisters, Mrs. Maud Redman of Van Buren, and Mrs. Pauline Clark of North Little Rock; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Nelson's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

I think I thought Uncle Cy and Aunt Let had the store in Fayetteville forever. But for the 1940 census, they were still living in Rudy, Crawford Co. They owned their home worth $2000.

Cy & Lettie made a trip to Europe in 1947. I knew them then and am surprised I don't remember hearing anything about the trip. They arrived in New York on the S.S. America from Cherbourg, France, on October 24, 1947, having left Cherbourg on October 11.

Cy Carney dies; longtime UA benefactor was 96.
Longtim University of Arkansas benefactor and Fayetteville business man Cy Carney, 96, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1993, in a local hospital.
His upbringing on the family farm at Rudy in Crawford County prompted him and his wife, Lettie, to establish the Carney Scholarship Endowment Fund in the UA College of Agriculture and Home Economics with a $12,000 gift in 1965. The fund has provided more than 200 individual scholarships since its inception.
Carney extended more than a financial helping hand - he also invited students to visit him in his home.
Born May 6, 1897, at Rudy, the son of william M. and Phoebe Henderson Carney, he established the Cy Carney General Merchandise Co. with $750 in 1919 at Rudy. He also constructed a warehouse there and shipped produce. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in World War I.
Carney came to Fayetteville in 1944 after opening a propane and appliance business in 1938. He also started business enterprises such as the Sunrise Nursing Home and made investments in real estate and cable television.
He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Arkansas Butane Dealers Association and president of the Liquified Petroleum Gas Association.
Carney was a lifelong member of the Republican Party, serving as a national delegate to the 1956 National Republican Convention in San Francisco and a delegate to several state and county conventions. He was a 50 year member of the Lions Club and United Commercial Travelers.
Although Carney made donations to other UA projects like the Athletic Department and the restoration of Old Main, his generosity was not limited to the state's flagship university. Carney contributed steadily to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.; the Arkansas Children's Hopital in Little Rock; the local Salvation Army; United Way; and Goodwill Industries.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Fayetteville.
His wife preceded him in death in 1980.
He is survived by his son, Cy Carney Jr. of Jacksonville; his daughter, Kathryn Dickey of Fayetteville; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be a 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Nelson's Funeral Home with Dr. Jere Mitchell officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
