11. James Moses HIGGINBOTHAM36 was born about 1755 in Amherst County, Virginia.8 He died on 1 November 1826 at the age of 71.8 According to the Higginbotham research, this Moses was James Moses, although his father and his son appear to be just named Moses. Fought in the Revolution with his brother Robert at Kings Mountain and Guilford Courthouse. Moses and Robert left New Glasgow in Amherst Co in the midst of the Revolution and settled in Indian Territoy, known as the Holston Vally (southwest VA & TN). In Aug 1781 Moses filed claim for 150 acres for improvements he had made in 1778. Warrant issued 20 Dec 1781. He acquired additional tracts of Land. Moses & Robert were active in the formation of Tazewell Co and it was formed in 1799. Said to have married Elizabeth Garrison, 3 Feb 1785, Washington Co. Married (2) Elizabeth Faires, 28 Apr 1800. James Moses HIGGINBOTHAM and Elizabeth "Betsey" GARRISON were married on 3 February 1785 in Washington County, Virginia.36 Elizabeth "Betsey" GARRISON died before 1800. James Moses HIGGINBOTHAM and Elizabeth "Betsey" GARRISON had the following children: 70 | i. | William Kyle HIGGINBOTHAM36 was born about 1786.36 He died about 1855 at the age of 69.36 He served in the military in War of 1812. Married Elizabeth Bolling in 1806. Elizabeth apparently died before 1850; he died a few years later. Children: Elizabeth, David, Jennie, Moses, Polly, James, Bailey Washington, Rebecca. | 71 | ii. | James Garrison HIGGINBOTHAM36 was born on 27 December 1789.36 He died on 18 February 1866 at the age of 76 in Tazewell County, Virginia.36 Married Elizabeth Hensley abt 1809. Elizabeth b. 29 Mar 1790, d. 25 Sep 1841. He married (2) Isabella Scott in Smythe Co VA 3 Mar 1847. | 72 | iii. | Moses HIGGINBOTHAM36 was born on 18 January 1791.36 He died on 27 October 1869 at the age of 78 in Saint Charles County, Missouri.36 Married Elanor Jane Smith, Tazewell Co VA 15 Oct 1813. Moved to St. Charles Co MO ca 1838. | 73 | iv. | Frances HIGGINBOTHAM36 was born in 1792 in Russell County, Virginia.36 She died on 23 March 1855 at the age of 63.36 Married Bailey Bolling, Russell Co VA 16 Feb 1816. | 74 | v. | Aaron HIGGINBOTHAM36 was born about 1795 in Tazewell County, Virginia.36 He died in November 1846 at the age of 51 in Linn County, Missouri.36 Will dated Oct 10, 1846 in Linn Co MO. Free 3 slaves, leaving them a tract of land. Apparently no heirs. An Aaron Higginbotham is found still in Tazewell, VA, 1830 & 1840. 1830: age 30-40 1840: age 40-50 He lived alone. | 75 | vi. | Joseph HIGGINBOTHAM36 was born about 1797.36 He died in September 1877 at the age of 80 in Tazewell County, Virginia.36 Married Millie Young 6 Feb 1817. | 76 | vii. | George HIGGINBOTHAM was born about 1798 in Russell County, Virginia.36 Married Patsy Chaffin, 21 Jun 1822. left Tazewell Co between 1830-1840. |
James Moses HIGGINBOTHAM and Elizabeth FAIRES were married on 8 April 1800. Elizabeth FAIRES was born (date unknown). James Moses HIGGINBOTHAM and Elizabeth FAIRES had the following children: 77 | i. | Jane "Jennie" HIGGINBOTHAM36 was born in 1804 in Tazewell County, Virginia.36 Married Samuel D. Sayers in Tazewell Co VA 16, Sep 1820. | 78 | ii. | Charles HIGGINBOTHAM36 was born in 1808 in Tazewell County, Virginia.36 Married Rebecca Bolling on 26 Dec 1826 after he inherited the old family home place. Before 1860 they moved to Morgan Co KY. | 79 | iii. | Thomas HIGGINBOTHAM37 was born in 1811 in Tazewell County, Virginia.36 He died in June 1862 at the age of 51 in Fannin County, Texas.36 In 1838 brother Charles sold his interest in the family farm to Thomas. About 6 years later he moved to Morgan Co KY and at the same time Thomas & his family moved to Scott Co VA. In 1852 Thomas sold the farm to his nephew Thomas Jefferson Higginbotham, son of James Garrison and Elisabeth Hensley Higginbotham, and moved to Morgan Co KY where his brother Charles and the Goodwin family had settled. However, Thomas and Gracy moved on to Fannin Co TX ca 1858 on Bois d-Arc Creek about 8 miles north of Honey Grove. Thomas operated a steam mill. He died July, 1862, and was buried in the family cemetery on the farm. Gracy and the younger children lived there until ca July 1869, when they moved to Newton Co MO where she bought a farm at Miller's Branch near Seneca. She died there 3 Jun 1872. 1850 Census. Higginbotham (female), 22 Thomas may have been in declining health when he deeded his personal goods to his wife Gracy. Others in the Fannin Co deeds seem to make similar arrangements - perhaps a way to avoid making a will. Fannin Co TX Deed Book L., p.389 Thomas H. Higginbotham of Fannin Co for $1 to Gracy Higginbotham, one Negro Woman Sally & son Isaac, also Sam, Jane, Hannah, George, ?Reese, Hugh, Jeptha & Rosabella. Also 16 head of horses & 4 mules, 75 head of cattle, 3 wagons & a buggy, my present crop of corn and cotton, farming implements and household furniture. To have & to hold forever. 2 Sep 1859. Gose 17 Apr 1828. By 1840 they had left Taxewell. In 1846 John Gose was a witness to the will of his brother-in-law Aaron Higginbotham in Linn Co MO. |
