13. Charles HARMON^11,12,13,14 was born on 4 October 1811 in Hamilton County, Ohio.^2,14 He died on 29 March 1883 at the age of 71 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana.¹⁵

Harrison Township
....The first which settler in Harrison township was Martin Crist, who, in 1840, staked off a claim and erected a log house on the north bank of Little Wildcat. ....In 1841 came David Bates, Charles Harmon, Bernhart Learner
....The first corn was grown in Harrison township in the summer of 1841. Charles Harmon, who settled on the quarter section in the southeast corner of the township, had by the spring of '41 cleared enough ground to put in a patch of five acres. That was undoubtedly the largest cleared strip of ground in the county at that time, outside, of course, the small prairies in the northern and northwestern parts.
....The first orchards in the township were planted by Marion Crist, J. W. Heaton and Charles Harmon. The latter went to Indianapolis for his trees. He brought back one hundred, mostly apple, but mixed with them were a few cherries and pears.

1870, Howard Co IN, Taylor Twp, p.489b. Listed as Charles Harmel, age 59, b. Ohio. Elizabeth was age 56, b. New York. "C.M.", male, age 20, lived with them, listed as a Farm Hand.

1880. Charles & Mary Harmon, both age 69 were in Howard Co IN.
Clara Lowery, age 11, lived with them - no relationship stated

Dear Inez and David:
Enlcosed are copies of the tiems I have collected on our Great Grandfather Charles Harmon. Some you may already hold, but since I do not know what you have, I will send it all. charles was born in what is now Cincinnati, Ohio. Hamilton County was at the time of his birth, the crossroads where the northern and southern migration routes met, and then moved on into Indiana and Illinois. I feel that Charles was a single birth, not a twin, as some researchers think. I will expand on this later. His DOB and Date of Death are well established.
His marriage to Elizabeth Rodman was very hard find for me. My grandfather, John Thomas Harmon, insisted that he married an Appligate. All members of the Applegate families daid NO!! As it resolved, it was his older brother, Charles H. Harmon, that had married Laura B. Applegate. Elizabeth Rodman was a sister of William S. Rodman, and with William S. rodman's marriage to Emily Harmon, daughter of James Harmon and Philadelphia Dickerson, the Harmon-Rodman family ties were very close.
By the 1840 census almost all the Harmon families had moved from Marion County, Indiana to Hamilton County, Indiana, or to Illinois. Both the Charles Harmon and the William S. Rodman families were living in Illinois during the 1840 federal census, according to the census index. To date, I have not been able to access this 1840 census record. Perhaps you can have better success with your computer.
Charles Harmonn and the William S. Rodman families arrived in the Miami Indian Territory in what is today Howard County, Indiana in the early 1841's even before it was opened for settlement. I have seen the first land survey of the county and there were many settlers (squatters) in the county before it was officially opened. Enclose with letter are some of Blanchard's early history of Howard County, Indiana. As you can see Charles Harmon was a very active person.
I have not gone to the Tax Office and tried to determine where charles lived/owned property. That can be very time consuming, as all the old records are hand written, sometimes very poorly. Perhaps today they are all indexed.
If you have any information on Charles Harmon that I have not forwarded, please furnish me with a copy. I will pick up in the next letter with the families of the children of Charles and Elizabeth Rodman-Harmon.

Charles HARMON and Elizabeth RODMAN were married on 30 March 1831 in Marion County, Indiana.⁵ Elizabeth RODMAN, daughter of RODMAN, was born on 9 August 1815 in New York.^14,15 She died on 22 March 1873 at the age of 57 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana.¹²

Elizabeth's grave marker may have a different birthdate. FindAGrave has that she was born 9 Sep 1815, instead of August. She died 22 Mar 1873, Kokomo, IN and is buried Albright Cemetery. Memorial #20142711

Charles HARMON and Mary SNODGRASS were married on 22 July 1873 in Howard County, Indiana.¹⁵ Mary SNODGRASS was born on 1 September 1810. She died on 30 December 1885 at the age of 75 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana.

On last Wednesday Mrs. Mary Harmon who has been living with her daughterm Mrs. Murial Carr of this place, died of paralysis. Her remains were interred in the Alto cemetery on Thursday. Funeral services at the M. F. church by Rev. Foster. Mrs. Harmon was 75 years old and from early childhood had lived a true Christian. She leaves a host of relatives and many friends to mourn her. loss.
