Fifth Generation

220. Nancy SHEPLER was born in 1806.2 She died in 1882 at the age of 76.2

Nancy SHEPLER and Smith FRYE were married on 21 March 1824 in Washington County, Pennsylvania.2 Smith and Nancy were second cousins. Smith FRYE2, son of Abraham FRYE and Hester JOHNSON, was born on 11 August 1806 in Washington County, Pennsylvania.2 He died on 22 June 1860 at the age of 53 in Peoria County, Illinois.2

Smith is the first of the family to carry that given name. No ancestors named Smith have been found but there were Smiths living along Cedar Creek in Virginia that were neighbors of the Fryes. He is said to be the 12th child in the family, but I don't have a complete list.

Smith Frye was shot. He had a contract with a Charles C. Carroll to feed cattle from the slops of Caroll's distillery. There was a dispute over the final payment of $100 and Carroll drew a gun; when Smith grabbed Carroll's hand the gun fired and shot Smith in the abdomen. He died the next day. Smith exonerated Carroll of blame, but he was tried just the same and was found guilty of manslaughter.

There was a will dated 25 Dec 1858, naming wife Nancy as Executrix. Nancy was to dispose of his property and pay bequests to the children. Sons Peter, Jacob & Henry had received advances; Smith and James were to receive their bequest at age 21. Daughter Jane had received her share; daughters Sarah, Catherine Margaret, Natilla & Peoria E. still had their bequests coming. The will was filed for probate 6 Jul 1860.
