267. WILLIAM CHARLES "Bill" HADEN was born on 7 April 1910 in Ladonia, Fannin County, Texas.²¹⁸ He died on 11 September 1992 at the age of 82 in Springdale, Washington County, Arkansas.²¹⁸

His birth certificate filed 7 Apr 1910, does not give his name - only that he was born alive, the son of Robt C. Haden, and Audrey Earl White. His father listed as a merchant.

John Haden story:
When William was in High School (school went through 11 grades only) he was in study hall when a group of elementary children were practicing the "Star Spangled Banner". Willie stood up and wouldn't sit down until the song ended. He was asked what his parents would say about his behavior. His reply: "They'd think they had a very patriotic son!"

May 30, 1947 Ladonia News listed graduates up through that year. William graduated in 1928, along with neighbor Bernice Fuller, his best friend Bill Hulsey, cousin Anna Bell Wishard and one of Lois's Fry cousins, Bessie. I have his graduation invitation and all the cards, apparently from his gifts. Commencement was held Friday evening, May twenty fifth at eight-fifteen o'clock, High School Auditorium. I also have a copy of the Senior play, "At the End of the Rainbow", a College Comedy in Three Acts, by Lindsey Barbee. William played the part of Stanley Palmer, also called "Hawkins, the Butler". The Play was presented 26 Dec 1927.

During the school 1928-29, William attended North Texas Agricultural College. It has formerly been a military school and until 1933 had a high school unit. I have pictures of William in a military appearing uniform. One letter to his grandmother states that he would rather be studying art - in the most beautiful handwriting. He also thanked his grandmother for the candy she sent him. That letter as well as those written to him while he was in business college had been saved in a candy box - assorted chocolates from Jacobs of New Orleans. I very much suspect this is the box that came from his grandmother - the thank you letter is addressed to Mrs. J. B. Haden, Sr. of Ladonia, Texas, dated 16 Dec 1929. A piece of tape on the bottom of the box reads "Perisha(ble) PLEAS(E)... From R. C. Had (en) Low (quite possibly Lowell, Arkansas).

Apparently sometime in 1929 or 1930 William entered Metropolitan Business College in Dallas. I have copies of a lot of letters his parents sent to him, beginning with 8 Sep 1930 when he was applying to re-enter the school. He also asked his father about attending Texas A & M but was told that wasn't a good idea. Over the next couple of years, he did attend the business college, dropping out on occasion to help his father in his business. The letters end as he is preparing to take exams to graduate on May of 1931. I don't know if he did pass or not. He told us years later that he had worked at a bank in Dallas after attending business school but had to leave to go home and run his father's business. He seemed to consider this a turning point in his life. Many of the letters speak to him both about his spending habits and his failure to apply himself. His father discusses his own ill health in nearly every letter. They are altogether quite sad.

Lois and Bill Haden eloped. They were married at 5:30 PM on the 25th day of Nov. 1932 by Rev. Ernest Quick, minister of the 1st Baptist Church of Hugo OK. Witnesses: were Mrs. Quick and Winifred Quick. The marriage was recorded on p.179 of Book 23 in Choctaw Co OK. A note by Lois in her "wedding book" said the weather was "a beautiful crisp autumn day".

William's grandfather Joseph B. Haden, noted in his diary for this day, "Our grandson William, married."

I found his Draft Classification cards for World War II. In July of 1943, he was classified as II-A because he had dependants; by Sept this was no longer a legitimate exception so he was reclassified as I-A, or available for military service, but in Oct of 1943, William was classified II-C - deferred because his occupation was necessary to farm labor. Both his brothers served - Robert in the Navy and John as a Marine pilot.

WILLIAM HADEN
William C. "Bill" Haden, 82, of Springdale died Friday, Sept 11, 1992, at his home. Born April 7, 1910 at Landonia [sic-Ladonia], Texas, the son of Robert Charles and Audrey White Haden, he was a retired partner of the Lowell Seed Company. He was a Baptist. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Haden, in 1988.
Survivors are three sons, Jim Haden of Little Rock, Don Haden of Wetumpka, Ala., and Ralph Haden of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers, Robert Haden of Springdale and John Haden of Bedford, Texas; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Bluff Cemetery with the Rev. Burton A. Miley officiating. Arrangements are by Sisco Chapel of Springdale.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

They eloped LOIS GENEVA PIPPIN, daughter of JAMES FRANK PIPPIN and CARRIE DOVE FRY, was born on 29 September 1915 in Ladonia, Fannin County, Texas.²¹⁸ She died on 12 November 1988 at the age of 73 in Springdale, Washington County, Arkansas.²¹⁸

I have an autograph book that belonged to Lois. Entries are dated 1928-1930. The flyleaf says "Shoolday Memories bring back Pleasant Thought of Happy House, Spent in Work and Play.
Lois wrote this note:
I first went to school in the Town of Ladonia. I went to school 5 years then moved to Leonard and went 5 or 6 moths there. Thin I moved to Bonham, and went to school in [unreadable but it must be the name of a school in Bonham] for a long time. I am now living in Honey Grove & expect to live here for a pretty good time. I have found real friends in Ladonia, Leonard & Honey Grove. Some people in Honey Grove have proved themselves a true friend, and friend to me and I'll always remember a few of them

Saturday night, R. W. Ward, Joseph Bailey and Fred Hedricks turned over in a car on West Market street and R. W. was hurt about the head. He was taken to the Paris sanitarium and is improved. Joseph Bailey broke two ribs, and the Hedricks boy was uninjured.

The book has notes from several cousins: Ruby Lee Dillard, Pauline Pharr, and Lois and Robert Lansford.

There was also an old photo album from Lois's high school daysk in very bad shape and falling apart. Items gleaned from it included:
Program from what must have been the Football Banquet, 1930. Lois Pippin was on the Pep Sqaud.
She must have admired a young man named Paul Wisdom as she kept several articles and underlined his name. There was also a picture of Sanders Magness of Honry Grove - quite handsome.

She notes, "We met in Ladonia on February 5, 1932 - had our first date on the night of Feb. 5.
They were married on "a beautiful crisp autumn day" at the home of Rev. Ernet Quick, 5:30 PM, Nov 25, 1932, Hugo, Oklahoma. Witnesses were Mrs. Ernest Quick & Winifred Quick.

Miss Lois G. Pippin and W. G. Haden, prominent Ladonia, Texas, residents, were married here Friday evening in the First Baptist parsonage by the Rev. Ernest Quick. The ceremony was witnessed by several Hugo friends.
[Note: they had eloped. No waiting in Oklahoma and brides only had to be 14 back then to marry without parental permission.]

Popular Ladonia Couple Wed Fri.
A Wedding of much interest to many friends in Ladonia and else where took place Friday, Nov. 25th at five p.m. at the First Baptist church in Hugo when Rev. Quick impressively, with the ring ceremony, united in wedlock, Mr. William Charles Haden and Miss Lois Pippin.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Pippin and has been principally reared here, where she is much loved by all who know her, for her splendid traits. Mr. Haden is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Haden and has lived in Ladonia all of his life. He is known as an upstanding young gentleman and is in every way worthy of the splendid young woman he has chosen as his life partner.
Mr. Haden is at this time associated with his father in the wholesale fruit and plant business.
It is a great pleasure for their relatives and numerous friends to extend to them the very best wishes for a long and happy married life.
Mr. and Mrs. Haden are at home in an apartment at the R. T. Bartley home on Church street.

On December 1st, 1932, at the home of Mrs. Jno Miller a shower was given in my honor. Twenty five guests were present and a beautiful array of gifts were received after a very interesting treasure hunt.
Lois also noted: We were married on November 25, 1932, in Hugo, Okla. at the home of Rev. Ernest Quick, at 5:30 o'clock PM. A beautiful crisp autumn day.
Lois listed her guests and filled out a family tree. She didn't know her father's parents, and she listed her mother Carrie Fry's mother as Viola Elizabeth Higginbotham Fry. She recorded the birth of the first son: James Charles Haden, born July 25, 1935.

Mr. and Mrs. W. C. (Bill and Lois) Haden celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Nov. 25 in their home in Springdale. Attending were two of their three sons and five of their eight grandchildren: Jim and Sandy Haden of Little Rock with Jim's sons, Brian Haden of Hendrix College and Lewis Haden of Conway; Master Sgt. W. Ralph and Belinda Haden of San Antonio, Texas with the nexest granddaughter, Amanda Jo, and sons, Seth Haden and Jeremy Haden. Other guests were Mrs. Jim Haden's mother and brothers, Mrs. Billye Shore of Jacksonville, Monty Shore of Tulsa, Okla., John Shore of Fayetteville, and Beverly Chandler of Fort Smith. Unable to attend were Don and Kay McKim Haden of Wetumpka, Ala. and family, Steve Haden of Tulsa University, Stuart Haden of Auburn University and Suzanne [sic-Susanna] Haden.

Lois G. Haden, 73, of Springdale died Nov. 12 at Springdale Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept 29, 1915, in Ladonia, Texas, the daughter of James Franklin and Carrie Dove Fry Pippin. She was a homemaker and a member of Elmdale Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Haden of the home; three sons, Jim Haden of Little Rock, Don Haden of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Ralph Haden of Omaha; one brother, Jim Pippin of Durant, Okla.; two sisters, Mrs. Jack (Juanita) Deatherege of Durant and Mrs. Don (Virginia) Gibbon of Golden, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bluff Cemetery with the Rev. Burton Miley officiating. Arrangements are by Sisco Chapel of Springdale.
