SMITH-HADEN WEDDING OF WIDE INTEREST
A marriage of interest throughout the South, particularly in Alabama and Texas, was that of Miss Mary Alice Haden, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Haden, of Quanah, Texas, and Luther Hill Smith, son of Mrs. Paul Smith of Montgomery and the late Mr. Smith.
The marriage took place at the home of the bride's parents in Quanah on wednesday, March 25, at high noon, in the presence of relatives and immediate friends.
....Mrs. Smith is a young woman of great charm and beauty. She attended St. Mary's College at Dallas, Texas, and Sullings College, Virginia.
Mr. Smith is the youngest son of Mrs. Paul Smith. Paternally and maternally he is of ancestry which has been prominent in the history of Alabama. He is a grandson of Walter L. Bragg and William H. Smith.
He is now prominently associated with the Eugene R. Smith cotton firm of Quanah, Texas, and is identified with the social and civic life of the city.
NOTES: Walter Lawrence Bragg (February 25, 1838 – August 21, 1891) was an American Democratic politician and government official. He was one of the original commissioners of the Interstate Commerce Commisssion serving from the Commission's creation in 1887 until his death in 1891.
William Hugh Smith (April 26, 1826 – January 1, 1899) was an American planter and politician, the Twenty-First Governor of Alabama. He was the first Republican elected as governor in the state, serving from 1868 to 1870 during the period of Reconstruction. A former slave owner, he had opposed secession from the union on the grounds it would imperil slave property. He appeared driven by practical consideration rather than principled opposition to slavery.
