220. Adm. George Allan HOLDERNESS Jr.229 was born on 10 November 1900 in Tarboro, Edgecombe County, North Carolina.229 He died on 17 April 1987 at the age of 86 in Bethesda, Montgomery County, Maryland.

1923 US Naval Academy Yearbook, Lucky Bag, "Biographies" has both a picture and article about George. The biographies include baby or toddler pictures and do no seem to be in any particular order. He is noted as being on the Track Squad years 4 & 3 and playing class Basketball, years, 4, 3, 2. He was a member of Star years 4 & 3.

...After the reception Lieutenant and Mrs. Holderness left for Louisville, KY, where they will attend the Kentucky Derby, after which they will sail for Bermuda from New York. After June 1, they will be at home in Pittsburgh, PA.
The bride is the youngest daughter of Mrs. John Marvin Clark and the late Mr. Clark. She attended Salem College.
Lieutenant Holderness in the son of Mr. & Mrs. George A. Holderness of Tarboro. He was graduated from the United States Naval Academy, later doing work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Caregie Institute of Technology at Pittsburgh. He is now stationed at Pittsburgh, in the office of the inspector of naval materials.

21 May 1937. The Monarch of Bermuda sailed from Hamilton, Bermuda, on 19 May 1937, arriving in New York City on May 21st. I suspect this was the return of the Honeymoon. Listed as passengers were Lt. George A. Holderness, age 36, and Mary C. Holderness, age 24. He was born 1901 in Tarboro, NC - she was born 1913 in Elizabethtown, NC. Their home address was the Pennsylvania Apartments, in Pittsburg, PA.

Marriage record states Mary's parents as John Marvin Clark and Mattie Lyon Clark. Her father was deceased; her mother living in Elizabethtown. They were married by Civ. Barbee, Minister of M.E. Church, South, at the First Methodist Church of Elizabethtown. Howard Holderness of Greensboro and Harriet Holderness to Tarboro were two of the witnesses.

Mary Clark Holderness, 89, an amateur artist who in the 1970s designed a large stained-glass window for Children's Hospital, died Aug 22 of stroke complications at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda.
She had lived in the Washington area since the 1950s and in Chevy Chase since 1958.
Mrs. Holderness, a native of Elizabethtown, NC attended Salem College in North Carolina.
She had a home studio and produced sculptures, watercolors and portraits into the 1990s.
The window at the hospital, the focal point of its children's chapel, was commissioned by fundraiser John Sharon and his wife, Frances. Mrs. Holderness realized the family theme working with the artisan John P. F. Coleman.
She was a member of Chevy Chase Club and the Friends of Stratford.
Her husband, retired Rear Adm. George A. Holderness Jr. whom she married in 1937, died in 1987.
Survivors include a daughter, Jan Holderness of Washington; and a son, George III, of Bethesda.

CHEVY CHASE, MD - Mary LeGrande Clark Holderness, 89, died August 22, 2002 in Suburban Hospital, Bethesada, MD.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Rear Adminral George A. Holderness, Jr., USN (retired). Both were natives of North Carolina. She was a versatile amateur artist primarily a painter in her home studio. She designed and created together with Artison John P.F. Coleman a stained glass window for a children's chapel completed in 1977 which is still the focal point in the chapel

A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, Elizabethtown, NC, on Monday, September 23, at 11:30 am with Reverends Fred Davis and Donald Warren officiating.
