Mrs. Lillian Callaway West and Mr. H. I. Holderness of Pine Bluff, Ark. were married Tuesday evening by Rev. M. E. Chappell of the Hemphill Presbyterian Church. The ceremony took place at the home of her sister, Mrs. H. W. Williams, Jr., 1200 Elizabeth Boulevard. Mr. and Mrs. Holderness will make their home in Pine Bluff.

Hospital Monday night, after being accidentally shot near his home Saturday
night, were held yesterday afternoon at the Star City Presbyterian church,
conducted by the pastor, the Rev. J. W. McCain. Burial was in Hickory Grove
Cemetery in charge of Holderness-South Mortuary. Billy was shot when a .22
rifle in the hands of a young companion, Perry Hunter, with whom he had been
horseback riding, was discharged as young Hunter was dismounting from his
horse. The bullet struck Billy, still on his horse, in the hip and ranged
upward, causing an injury which resulted in his death Monday night.

Former Pine Bluff Mayor Dies Here
Harry I. Holderness, 82, retired busiess executive and three times mayor of Pine Bluff, died Sunday morning at 9 o'clock at the Convalescent home, following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Holderness was born in Cahmbersville, Calhoun county, on August 20, 1867, a son of Dr. A. S. and Catherine (Dixon) Holderness, both North Carolinians by birth.
His father, who was born in North Carolina and there spent his early life came to Arkansas at an early age, and was the original settler in what is now the town of Fordyce.
Mr. Holderness received his early education in the schools of Fordyce and came to Pine Bluff in 1867 and commenced the serving of a machinist apprenticeship in the Cotton Belt Railroad shops. He did not finish his apprenticeship in that field, however, but instead entered the employ of R. H. McFadden, funeral director. He continued with Mr. McFadden until he succeeded him as owner of the funeral firm in 1905.
For 11 years thenceforth, he had several partners and in 1916, he assumed full charge and complete ownership of the company, whereupon the name was changed to the H. I. Holderness Company.
In partnership with Dr. O. W. Clark, he was largely responsible for the building and the promotion of the Eden Park Addition, the Pine Bluff Country Club and the Memorial Part Natatorium. He served as president of the Graceland Investment Company, which owns the Graceland cemetery and was interested in many other enterprises of a civic nature, having served on the Board of Trustees at Arkansas A & M College for 20 years.
Mr. Holderness was one of the organizers of the Arkansas Funeral Director's Association and the first secretary of the group. Later he served several terms as its president, while he was also instrumental in forming the Arkansas State Board of Embalmers, of which he was, for 10 years, the president. he held embalmer's license No. !. He was likewise active in the National Funeral Directors' Association.
In 1928, he was elected mayor of Pine Bluff and served three terms. It was during this administration that the Pine Bluff drainage system was installed and the work was started on the levee that now protects Pine Bluff and Southeast Arkansas.
In addition to his work in the business and civic life of Pine Bluff and Arkansas, where he was widely known, Mr. Holderness was active in fraternal and club life. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, in which he belonged to Pine Bluff Lodge No. 69, Lafayette Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, the Damascus Commandry of Knights of Templar, Albert Pike Consistory of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, the Sahara Temple, the Knights of Pythias, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Woodmen of the World, and the Ancient Order of United Workmen.
Mr. Holderness was a member of the First Methodist Church of which he was a member of the Board of Stewards.
He wa first married in 1894, to the former Miss Vida Strange of Beebe, Ark., who died in 1910. To this union were born two children, George S. Holderness of New York city, and Mrs. Robert H. Baker of Little Rock, the former Vida May Holderness.
In 1922, Mr. Holderness was married to the former Mrs. Lillian West of Fort Worth, Texas, who survives him.
Besides his wife and two children he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. John R. Hampton of Little Rock and Miss Minnie Holderness of Fordyce, two brothers, Marvin E. Holderness and James Holderness of St. Louis, two grandchildren, Malcom Holderness of New York, and Miss Ann Baker, a student at Newcomb College, New Orleans, La., and other relatives.
Furneral services will be held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock from the chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son mortuary in charge of Rev. T. P. Devlin, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church.

Holderness established the Holderenss funeral home here in 1867. He was elected mayor in 1928 and served six years, retiring from business when he left office. He also organied the Arkansas Funeral Directors Association in 19__.
He served on the board of trustees of the AM and N College for Negroes here for 20 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillian Holderness, a son George, New York, a daughter, Mrs. Robert H. Baker, Little Rock; two brothers, Marvin E. and James Holderness, St. Louis; and two sisters, Mrs. J. R. Hampton, Little Rock, and Miss Minnie Holderness, Fordyce.

Harry I. Holderness Funeral to be at Pine Bluff, Ark.
Funeral services for Harry I. Holderness, retired Pine Bluff (Ark.) business man and former mayor of that city, will be at 11 am tomorrow at Pine Bluff. His brother, Marvin E. Holderness, who lives at 4954 Lindell Boulevard, is treasurer of the Municipal Theater Association of St. Louis and vice president of H. B. Deal & Co., general contractors.
Mr. Holderness, who died yesterday at Pine Bluff at the age of 82, was chariman of the board of the Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal College for Negroes at Pine Bluff, of which he had been a member for 20 years. He established the Holderness undertaking establishment there in 1887 and organized the Arkansas Funeral Directors Association in 1905.
Suviving besides his brother, are his wife, Mrs. Lillian Holderness; a son, George of New York, and a daughter Mrs. Robert H. Baker of Little Rock, Ark. LOCAL BOY IS GRANTED DEGREE BY VANDERBILT
Nashville, TN, June 15
Among the 200 graduates of Vanderbilt University receiving degrees this week was George Strange Holderness of Pine Bluff, who received a degree of Bachelor of Science. While a student at Vanderbilt, Mr. Holderness served on the staff of the Vanderbilt Hustler, being managing editor during the 1916-1917 term; was a member of Calumet Club 1915-1916 and 1916-1927; was president of the Arkansas Club, and a member of the Pan-Hellenic Club 1961-1917.
Mr. Holderness returned to the city from Vanderbilt about May 1st to enter the officers' reserve corps at Fort Logan H. Roots, near Little Rock where he is now training. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. H. I. Holderness. Fort Roots:
Fort Logan H. Roots (usually referred to simply as Fort Roots) is a military base located in North Little Rock, Arkansas. The land was traded to the Federal Government in 1892 in exchange for the property now known as MacArthur Park, in Little Rock, which had been a military arsenal since the 1830s before Arkansas was even a state. The base was named for Logan H. Roots in recognition for his work in the negotiations.
The Sixty-Sixth Congress of the United States transferred Fort Roots to the Public Health Service Department on March 4, 1921, for conversion to a veterans hospital for neuropsychiatric disorders. On June 10, 1983, a newly constructed hospital building was dedicated on the existing property. The main hospital building was formally named the Eugene J. Towbin Healthcare Center in May 1996 in honor of Eugene J. Towbin, M.D., Ph.D., in recognition of his 40-year career at the VA Medical Center. The Center provides long-term, rehabilitative care for eligible veterans.
Although four of the existing hospital structures were demolished, Fort Roots (as the campus is still known) retained many of its original military buildings and an 11-acre "parade ground" in the center of the original post. Bon Voyage Party
A bon voyage party was given in honor of the Misses Martha Von Dohlen and E. Mildred Krooss, both of Flatbush, at the home of Miss Krooss recently. There were 25 guests including members of Signa Delta soroity. An illuminated ship formed the table certerpiece. Mis Von Dohlen and Miss Kross sailed on Tuesday on the "Tuscania" for an extended trip through Europe.
The "Tuscania" of the Cunard line, arrived in London, 16 Jul 1927, from New York. Passenger #720 was E. Mildred Kross, bound for the Russell Hotel in London, She was a Teacher, age 28.

George S. Holderness Retired Architect
George S. Holderness of Bronxville, a retired architect who designed several hospitals in the area, died yesterday at Lawrence Hopital in Bronxville of heart failure. He was 92.
Mr. Holderness was a partner in the Manhattan architectual firm of Eggers and Higgins for 44 years, retiring in 1967. During that time he helped design Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in North Tarrytown, a wing of Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, Meadowbrook Hospital in Hempstead, NY and Triboro Hospital in Queens.
He was born 28 Dec 1895 in Pine Bluff, Ark to Harry I and Vida Strange Holderness. Mr. Holderness graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1917. He served in the US Army Field Artillery during World War I. After the war, he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating in 1922
He married Mildred Kross in New York City in 1933 and they lived in Brooklyn.
Mr. Holderness and his wife moved to Bronxville in 1957.
He was a member of the Reformed church in Bronxville.
Mr. Holderness was a member of the Siwanoy County club in Bronxville, the Larchmont Shore Club, the Shriners, the Masons and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
In additon to his wife, he is survived by a son, G. Malcolm of Manhattan; and a sister, Vida May Baker of Little Rock, Ark.

She was born 1 Mar 1881, in Austin, TX and was widowed. Her parents were William Henry Calloway, born in GA, and Nannie Smith, born in Virginia. Mrs. M. O. Rife was the informant.
