Joe registered for the World War I draft on 5 Jun 1917. He gave his name as Joe Ben Haden, Jr. and signed the same way. He was age 26, born 21 Oct 1890, in Ladonia, Texas, which was still his place of residence. He was a Dry Goods & Gro. Merchant, employed by J. B. Haden & Co. of Ladonia. He was married. He claimed exemption "Support wife, Needed Occupation". He is described as medium height, medium build, gray eyes, light hair.

Although the date of Joe & Clara's marriage was given to me as 1916 ...that was incorrect. County records show that they married 16 Jun 1915, Fannin Co.

1920 Census: Joe B. and Clara were renting in the rear of West Main. He is listed as "Retail Merchant"

Honey Grove Men Visit the Haden Farms at Ladonia
Joe Haden, business man, farmer and soy bean king of Fannin county, was host to sixteen men from Honey Grove Friday afternoon, the trip being made to the farms of Mr. Haden for the purpose of viewing the different crops of soy beans.
Those making the trip were S. M. Ford, Dan Baker, Tom Yant, Dick Self, A. G. Adams, Charlie Charles, H. L. Thompson, A. J. Garner, N. R. Troy, H. L. Allen, Earl Conyers, N. J. Barnes, Bob Neely, Elwyn Raiden, C. H. McCleary and J. V. Clayton.
Mr. Haden grows several varieties of the beans; the first place visited showed a demonstration of the hay crop. He explained that the hay is very nutritious and sells for $9 per ton and that stock prefer it to alfalfa....

Funeral services for Joe B. Haden, Jr., 66 year old retired merchant, were held at four o'clock Friday afternoon, June 21, 1957 at the First Baptist Church. Mr. Haden had been in ill health for the past several months. Death came at 9 o'clock Wednesday night, Jun 19, 1957, following a heart attack.
The Rev. G. B. Bailey, pastor of the First Baptist Church, conducted the service. Interment was in the IOOF Cemetery, directed by Delta Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Alvin Bramlett, Tom Cain, Ben Ed Fry, Robert Ponder, Ernest Moore, and Billy Hill. Honorary pallbearers were Roy Crossley, Grady Fowler, W. A. Bradshaw, Ebb Bartley, Carl Little, A. B. Cain, and L. F. Fry, all of Ladonia; and F. C. Bomar, Honey Grove; Allen Spies, Leonard; and Dr. L. H. Leberman and Dr. Marvin Connor, Commerce.
The survivors include his wife, Mrs. Clara Haden; a son, Dr. Joe B. Haden III of Abilene; a daughter Mrs. Edward White Jr of Galveston; two grandchildren, and two brothers, R. C. Haden and Maurice Haden, both of Ladonia.
Mr. Haden, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe B. Haden, SR., was born October 21, 1891 [1890] in Ladonia, and had lived here all his life. He was married in 1915 [1926] to Miss Clara Fulton of Ladonia, where he entered the mercantile busines..
Haden was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Ladonia and Bethel Lodge 134, A.F.& A.M. in Ladonia, of which he was a Past Master. He attended Ladonia High School, Austin College at Sherman and the Eastman Business College at Poughkeepsie.

The above clipping was accompanied by a letter from C. S. Holderness to Harris Connor & family, dated 4 Jul 1957. [C. S. was a brother-in-law of Joe B. Haden, Sr, being a brother to his wife Bettie Holderness Haden.] He states in the letter that Joe B. Jr had had a previous heart attack some months prior to the one that killed him. Joe B.'s brother Will had previously died of cancer.

LADONIA - Joe B. Haden, 66, retired dry goods merchant, who died of a heart attack here Wednesday, was buried Friday. The funeral at First Baptist church was conducted by the Rev. G. B. Bailey and Delta Funeral Home made interment in the IOOF Cemetery.

Born in Ladonia, Oct 21, 1891, Mr. Haden was a son of J. B. and Elizabeth (Holderness) Haden, Graduate of high school here and of Austin College, Sherman, and Eastman Business College, Poughkeepsie, NY. He was a member of the Baptist church here and of Bethel Lodge No. 134 AF&AM.
He married Miss Clara Fulton in 1915 and she survives, besides a son Dr. Joe B. Haden, III, Abilene and Mrs. Edward White Jr., Galveston; two grandchildren and two brothers, R. C. Haden, Ladonia.

Joseph Benjamin HADEN Jr. and Clara FULTON were married on 16 June 1915 in Fannin County, Texas.257 Clara FULTON194, daughter of Samuel Hugh FULTON and Lona Sue PAYNE, was born on 17 September 1893 in Texas.187,256 She died on 7 August 1978 at the age of 84 in Ladonia, Fannin County, Texas.187

Gleaners Class Met with Mrs. Jack Deatherage
The Gleaners Class of the 1st Baptist Church met Wed., Mar 9 in its monthly business session at the home of Mrs. Jack Deatherage.
Plans were made for a Visitation Day and Talent Offering was given toward the new Educational Building. A dainty refreshment course was served ten members.
Mrs. Joe Haden, Jr. is teacher of the class and the class extends an invitation to all Young women not affiliated with a Sunday School Class to come and worship with us each Sunday morning.

Mrs. Clara Haden has been transferred from a Paris hospital to Park Plaza hospital in Houston.

Clara Fulton Haden died at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, 7 Aug 1978. Her home address was 506 Main Street, Ladonia, Fannin, Texas. Clara was born 17 Sep 1893 and was a widow age 84 at her death. She died of a fracture of the hip with accompanying arteriovascular disease. She had a fall to the floor. Her father was Samuel Hugh Fulton; mother was Lona Payne. Joe Haden was the informant. Burial in Ladonia Cemetery.

Mrs. J. B. (Clara Fulton) Haden Jr., formerly of Ladonia, died Aug 7 at a Dallas hospital.
A descendent of an early pioneer family of the Ladonia area, she was born Sept 17, 1893, at Ladonia, daughter of Samuel Hugh Fulton and the former Lona Sue Payne. She graduated from Ladonia High School and Texas Presbyterian College in Milford, receiving her degree in 1914.
On June 16, 1915, she Married Joe Ben Haden Jr. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church at Ladonia and a longtime teacher of the Gleaner's Class there. She was a member and past president of both the Southern Literary Club and the 1937 Study Club. she had also held offices at the district level in the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs. She was a past president of the Ladonia High School Parent-Teacher Association.
Survivors nclude a son, Dr. Joe Ben Haden III of Houston; a daughter, Mrs. Edward White Jr. of Dallas; and six grandchildren, Sharon, Virginia Claire and Greg White, and Kathy, Joe, and Doug Haden.
