Yetman and related families of Newfoundland

Notes

James Hedley YETMAN

I have a picture of James' gravesite (he is my grandfather). James and his first wife Clara (my paternal grandmother) had 9 children before she died. I do not have the names of all of them. One was an infant and one was a little boy who died tragically in a fire at the age of three. After Clara's death James married another woman named Annie who was a lot younger than him. They had two children - a boy and a girl. The boy's name is Jim (James?). They were both born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Annie died in 1996 in St. John's.

1921 Census - St. John's West; Profession: Fireman; Age 26; Religion: Church of England

James middle name is listed on my father's (Frederick Roy Yetman) baptismal record as Hedley.

My cousin Valerie (nee Yetman) Simms of St. John's, Newfoundland Canada - Aug 1997 - said James' middle name is Hedley - this according to Valerie's mother Olive Yetman.

More information from Val (4 Feb 1999) -- James Hedley was a short man; wore size 6 shoes

Baptism certificate -- Tilton in Parish of Spaniard's Bay Exact birth and baptismal date -- Names revised in record NOTE: On some of James Hedley's children's records, his middle name is listed as Harvey -- in this record it is changed to Hedley. Listed parents as Clement (fisherman) and Harriett; Abode: Tilton. Copy requested 5 April 1950 but I do not know why or for whom.

Clara CURTIS

Everything I know of Clara has been given to me verbally by family members. She died when my father (Frederick Roy Yetman) was 14 years old.

1921 Census - St. John's West; 24 at time of census; Religion: Church of England

Following information from NFLG - Record - 1803357

Exact death date from cemetery plot in Forest Road Cemetery, Church of England. Buried as Clara Yetman (her married name).

According to my cousin Valerie (nee Yetman) Simms of St. John's, Newfoundland - Aug 1997, Clara was born in King's Cove.

Family traditions have a lot of mysteries around Clara - she is supposed to have been Spanish, Indian or French because she had a dark complexion and her hair was so black as to be almost blue. There is some thinking that she was a teacher. I know from seeing her marriage certificate that she was literate so this is not an impossibility.

St. John's Daily News, 1 April 1935: Passed peacefully away Sunday at 2:30 PM after a short illness. Clara, beloved wife of James Yetman, aged 43 years. Leaving to mourn husband, two daughters, six sons, two sisters, one brother and a large circle of friends. Funeral will take place at 2:30 PM today, Monday from her late residence, Mount Royal Avenue. Foreign papers please copy.

Cyril YETMAN

Cyril was tragically killed in a fire at the age of four. He was with some older boys in a storage shed in his yard. The older boys were playing with matches and caught fire to the shed -- they escaped but Cyril didn't. Apparently, all that was ever found of him was one shoe. His mother never recovered from the shock of his death and died months afterwards.

The Daily News -- St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada P. 10 -- Saturday, 21 July 1934
"FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD IS BURNED TO DEATH"

Cyril Yetman loses life when bough house catches fire -- residence partially gutted.

Shortage of water for fire fighting.

Yesterday afternoon, Cyril Yetman, four year old son of Mr. & Mrs. James Yetman, Mount Royal Avenue, was burned to death when a bough house, in which the small boy was playing, caught fire. The flames spread through the open windows of Mr. Yetman's residence, and before the firemen could get the flames subdued, the residence was partially gutted and a great deal of the furniture and wearing apparrel burned. No insurance was carried on the furniture or effects, and a little on the residence.

At 3:28 PM yesterday, a phone call to the central fire hall summoned the fire-fighting apparatus to Mount Royal Ave. When the apparatus got to the junction of LeMarchant Rd. and Golf Ave., Superintendent Codner could see smoke and smell the fire. The apparatus went up Golf Ave. and down Mount Royal Ave. When the apparatus arrived at the scene the bought house, which had been set up about 4 feet from the back of the residence, was consumed and the flames had entered the back window of the residence, which was burning seriously. Two lengths of the hose were laid out to a hydrant at Mount Royal Ave., about 150' away from the burning house. When the valves at the hydrant were opened, there was an absence of pressure and a considerable time was taken up with coupling the pumper. Three streams of water were then available, two being used on the burning house and one on the house opposite, the paint on which was cracking from the heat.

Superintendent Codner informed the Daily News last night that nobody mentioned to him that the little boy was within the bough house when it was burned.

Sister and Brother Fail in Rescue

The father of the little victim in an engineer with the Railway, at the pump house at the dock, and was working yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Yetman left her house to do some shopping, leaving a 17 year old girl and a 14 year old boy in the house. Suddenly they heard screams coming from the back yard and, rushing out, found the bough house in flames. They made efforts to get at the small boy and finding they could do nothing to save him, and the house being then on fire, they shouted for help. A telephone had been installed in the house and the fire department was phoned.

The body of the boy was recovered and taken in the West end fire truck to the morgue, and afterwards removed to the undertaking parlours of W.J. Barrett, from when the funeral will take place this afternoon at 2:30 PM. He leaves to mourn father, mother, six brothers and two sisters.

Mark YETMAN

Information on Mark Yetman (my grandfather) and his family came from the following sources:

Mr. David Briffett (my second cousin); 203 - 3e Avenue; Verdun, Quebec; H4G 2X1; Letter: 30 October 1976.

Mrs. Julia Uhlman; Carbonear Road; Harbour Grace, Newfoundland; Canada. Information given during visit 7 Sept. 1973.

Mark Yetman's death date from an obituary notice; my mother (Mary Beatrice Yetman) attended his funeral.

Mark Yetman and Elizabeth Briffett were married by Rev. J. March at Immaculate Conception Church (Roman Catholic). Witnesses to the wedding were William Glavine -- Harbour Grace - South Side and Catherine Yetman - Bryant's Cove.

Elizabeth Ann BRIFFETT

I have copies of Elizabeth Briffett's baptismal record and marriage certificate in my possession. Elizabeth was baptised by J. March at Immaculate Conception Church (Roman Catholic). Sponsors to the baptism were Wm. Delaney and Bridget Yetman.

Elizabeth died at the age of 92.

Edward YETMAN

I have been told that Edward died as a baby but I don't know how old he was.

James YETMAN

James always goes by "Jim." Uncle Jim had several children and I was friends with the oldest daughter Mary who was 2 or 3 years older than me when I spent my summers in Newfoundland as a young teenager. She married before I did to a man who had the last name of Noseworthy.

James was baptised at Immaculate Conception Church (Roman Catholic).

Mark YETMAN

Uncle Mark died of cancer - I believe it was either stomach or colon cancer. Uncle Mark and Aunt Phil did not have any children.

Bridget YETMAN

Bridget died at the age of 14 of meningitis. I am assuming that she died in Bryant's cove and was buried there. It could have been in Harbour Grace.

Leo YETMAN

Never married but with Joyce for over 30 years. One daughter -- Lisa, born in August 1974.

Newfoundland Provincial Archives: File Entitled "All Newfoundland Births" -- Box 16 W - Z

Annie GOSSE

My step-grandmother married my grandfather when my father (Frederick Roy Yetman) was 14 years-old. They were married in Newfoundland; I am assuming she was born there. Annie and James Harvey Yetman had 2 additional children -- a daughter (I cannot think of her name) and a son named James (Jim). As of this date (Feb. 6, 1993), Annie is alive and living in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Information from Val (nee Yetman) Simms, my cousin -- 4 February 1999: Annie had 2, maybe 3 brothers and one sister -- Gladys, Barrett (a fur maker in Harbour Grace/Bay Roberts), Noah.

James YETMAN

James was my father's (Frederick Roy Yetman) half brother.

Clement YETMAN

Clement Yetman added to the family of Joshua Yetman and Caroline Hutchings based on the naming of Joshua [albeit Chipman] on the marriage record of Clement Yetman [Chitman] and Harriet Butt, and this Joshua being the only Joshua Yetman found born about the right time to be Clement's father. Clement's birth date as given in the 1921 Census is is only eight months after the birth date of the previous sibling. But his birth year is listed differently in every record found for him. At the time of his marriage to Harriet in 1888 he is listed as age 26, making him born in 1862. In the 1921 Census he is listed as being born in May 1867, but being age 64 which would make him born in 1857, obviously one is in error. In his obituary in 1927 he is listed as age 75, making him born in 1852. To add to the confusion, when he is married to Georgina Lundrigan he is listed as Clarence Yetman, son of Joshua Yetman, age 26 in 1884, making a birth year of 1858. But in the christening of their child Elfrida he is listed as Clement Yetman.
1921 Census - St. John's West; age listed as 64 at time of census. Street address listed as: St. John's West Ward 2 Patrick Street; Belonged to the Church of England; Profession: Laborer

St. John's - St. Mary's Church of England - Parish Records; Marriages: 1917 - 1923, Box 2
Newfoundland Provincial Archives; Occupation: Agent.

The Daily News, St. John's P. 10 -- 27 December 1927:
Passed peacefully away on December 26th, Clement Yetman, aged 75 after a long illness, leaving a wife, three sons, two brothers, three sisters, and a large circle of friends to mourn his sad loss. Funeral takes place from his late residence, 394 Water Street at 5:30 PM Tuesday , to the railway station.

As of 1927 he still had 3 living children and 5 living siblings (maybe others who preceeded him in death?)

McAlpine's 1904 Directory, Tilton; Clement (of Josh.) laborer [Also William, of Joshua, fisherman].

McAlpine's 1908 Directory, P 532; Clement Yetman (Occupation - furniture) living in Harbour Grace.

Apparently Clement and Harriet had not yet moved to St. John's from the Harbour Grace area. Oldest son (William) was born in Spaniard's Bay and the other three were born in Tilton. Therefore, marriage must have taken place in that area as well, probably in the Church of England.

Bay Roberts -- Tilton and Spaniard's Bay -- Church of England; Vol. 41; Baptisms: 1860 - 1891
Marriages: 1860 - 1891. Lists Clement as a fisherman on his son William's birth/baptism entry.

Marriage record is found there: Lists Clement as being "of Tilton" and Harriett as "of Spaniard's Bay."

Tilton - Spaniard's Bay - vital Statistics; Baptisms: 1860 - 1891, Vol. 41; Church of England - Spaniard's Bay - Harbour Grace, Fisherman

Marriage took place in Spaniard's Bay; Living in Tilton at time of marriage; 26 at time of marriage; Fisherman

Although Clement is listed as a bachelor at the time of his marriage to Harriett Butt, it seems evident that he is the same Clement Yetman who was married to Georgina Lundrigan and had a child Elfrida. Since both Georgina and Elfrida had died, this may have been a simple error in the records.

Harriet Sophia BUTT

Death date is approximate and place of death is believed to have been St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada but that is not certain.

1921 Census - St John's West. Age listed as 50 at time of census; Address listed as: St John's West Ward, 2 Patrick Street.

Valerie Simms (nee Yetman, cousin of Jennifer Yetman Bell) supplied information that Harriette's last name was Butt. Valerie also said that Harriett's second husband was a Mark Yetman.

Death date found in newspaper. Living with "Clem" -- "Uncle Bob's son" (according to Val Simms) on Craig Ave. at time of her death. (January 1999)

Bay Roberts -- Tilton and Spaniard's Bay -- Church of England; Vol. 41; Baptisms: 1860 -- 1891
Marriages: 1860 -- 1891

Harriett was married twice -- both times to a YETMAN. Her second marriage was to Mark YETMAN (I believe he was my Mother's uncle). She lived in Bryant's Cove with Mark. Later in life, after Clement's death, she lived with my great uncle Bob. After her marriage to Clement, she lived in Tilton and had a store there. Information provided by Val (nee Yetman) Simms, my cousin -- 4 Feb 1999. The second husband probably the Mark Yetman first married to Elizabeth Jane Noseworthy.

Chesley YETMAN

1921 Census - St. John's West; Single at time of census; Age 20 at time of census; Address: St John's West Ward 2 Patrick Street.

Substantial difference in the date I had of James' Birth as being 1819 and the one given to me in an email from [email protected] which gives it as 23 Sep 1845. I have gone with that date as Mr. Spafford had more detailed information on the family than I had. James was 70 years and 5 months when he died.

Maryanne Huggins and her aunt, Alice Adams, have in their family history that William Yetman was the son of John Yetman and Susan Menchions. (Feb 2004). This was verified through reviewing records. Previous parentage of Thomas and Susannah Yetman corrected.

Baptisms: 1860 - 1891, Vol.41; Marriages: 1864 - 1891, Vol. 41; Witnesses to Marriage: Mary Ann Yetman and Nathaniel Yetman.

1921 Census - Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, Canada; Upper Island Cove - Feather Point. This census lists Bridget's husband (William Henry Yetman) as being a widower so Bridget died sometime before the 1921 census was taken - probably in Bryant's Cove.

Will of Bridget WP 17 July 1915

In the name of God, Amen. I Bridget Yetman, of Bryant's Cove being of sound and disposing mind and memory, but of a feeble state of health, and considering the uncertainty of this life, do make publish and desire this to be my last will and testament as follows: First: I direct that my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses be paid. Second: Out of the bequest of my father the late William Dunn to me I give devise and bequeath the following sums: to my brother Thomas Dunn I give devise and bequeath fifty dollars, to my brother James Dunn I give devise and bequeath fifty dollars. Third, the remains (?) of said bequest of the late William Dunn, I give devise and bequeath equally among my husband William Yetman and my nine children, namely, Joseph, William, John, Mark, Thomas, Anastasia, Catherine, Mary Joseph and Julia Ann Yetman. And last, I hereby constitute and appoint Reverend John March to be executer of this my last will and testament, revoking and annulling all former wills by me made, and ratifying and confirming this, and no other, to be my last will and testament. Bridget Yetman (X) (her mark). Signed declared and published by the above named Bridget Yetman, (illegible) and for her last will and testament, in the presence of us, who, at her request, have signed as witnesses to the same this seventh day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and six. William Quilfoyle (?) William (X) (his mark) William Whelan.
Estate: $1818

Three other children, Eliel, Beatrice, and Nathaniel were at one time listed with this family. However, since they were not named in the will or the settlement of the estate they were unlinked from this family.

Ellen Mary YETMAN

Information came from baptismal certificate, listed as Ellen Mary. The name has sometimes been entered as Mary Ellen. There is also some question as to where the family was born. Some are listed as Bryant's Cove only or Bryant's Cove/Harbour Grace or nothing. I know that my grandfather (who appears as her brother "Mark" in this family) was born in Bryant's Cove so I am assuming the others were also. This person's name may also be Mary Jo. In Bridget Dunn Yetman's will there is a daughter Mary Joseph listed, but no Ellen Mary. It is possible they are the same child, but also possible Ellen Mary died and there was a later daughter born who was named Mary Joseph.

John Patrick YETMAN

Death date: John Patrick, by family tradition, died on the Titanic. But searches of Titanic websites giving complete passenger lists does not list anyone named Yetman. Birth information came from baptismal certificate. He was called Jack.

Mary Joseph YETMAN

Mary Joseph Yetman named in the will of her mother, Bridget Dunn Yetman.
