From Granville County Kinfolks - Deed Book "L" pg. 182. Nicholas METLOCK sold land in Granville Co., to James THOMPSON of Louisa County, VA in which Mary (SHELTON) METLOCK, wife of said Nicholas, relinquished her dower right, October 15, 1777.

[3] the following record is in the AMHERST CO, VIRGINIA census... could it identify how Notley Thomas ties in with the Matlocks??? If Sarah was Richard's sister, perhaps she did not marry Mr. Thomas, but named her child for him anyway - further research needed! This could explain Richard's comment in his Revolutionary War Pension Application  that the family Bible proving his birth was in the possession of his brother-in-law, Notley Thomas..... there must be some connection.

[5] Birthdate for Richard listed in his Pension application 7th June 1832 where he states the information comes from a Bible in the possession of his brother-in-law, Notley Thomas. In the 1830 Census, Notley Thomas lives adjacent to Richard Medlock in Hawkins County, TN. The name of the Matlock/Medlock sister he married is currently not known.

Personally appeared before me the undersigned, a Justice of the Peace in and for said County, Richard Medlock, an applicant for a pension under the Act of 7th June 1832 and who being duly sworn deposeth and saith in addition to the former statement contained in his Declaration hereto annexed, to-wit: that he has a record of his age which was contained in the Bible owned by his, affiant's, father in his lifetime but which Bible is now in the possession of Notley Thomas*, the brother-in-law of affiant and which shows that he was born in North Carolina 1761. He states further that he is acquainted with the Reverend William C. Reynolds and John Rogers who have testified to his character, etc. in his declaration and the affiant is acquainted with Lewis Click, Esq. all of whom reside in his neighborhood and many others who would, if necessary, testify as to his character for varacity their belief of his service SWORN to and SUBSCRIBED before me the 16th day of May 1833.

* Notley Thomas was b ca 1754 in Frederick Md and went to Newberry County SC (Ninety-Six District), then Hickory NC and finally to Hawkins Co TN where he shows up in the 1830 census living "next door" to Richard Medlock/Matlock. Notley died in Hawkins Co TN in 1841 leaving wife, Temperance Sheppard Thomas of Newberry SC, dau Mary, dau Elizabeth Thomas Bassett, and son John Thomas. He was listed on the 1835 Pension List for Hawkins Co TN as having cavalry and infantry service. At that time his age was 81.

Does this tell us that wife number one of Richard was a Shepperd or that Notley Thomas had more than one wife???

[2] ages for children in this family group are determined by comparing data in several censuses.

[3] David served in the War of 1812 in the First Regiment (Bradley's) of the Tennessee Volunteers as Ensign, then as Sergeant in the First Regiment (Hall's) of the Tennessee Volunteers along with his brother Charles. After Charles died abt. 1833 in Indiana, David is said to have raised the youngest child, William Robert and perhaps others of Charles' surviving children (if any survived). This explains why William Robert (youngest son of Charles) spent time in Van Buren, Iowa where David moved. The estate of Charles Matlock was administered by Matthew Tanner then his son Samuel (after the senior Tanner's decease) in Jackson County, Indiana. Matthew Tanner entered into bond with Jonah F. de Bolt and Andrew Gilwick to administer the estate; Samuel Tanner entered into bond with Daniel Peck and Adam Miller. The estate was not settled until 1837. 

[4] The 1830 census in Hawkins Co., TN, shows Loving living adjacent to his father and brother Charles with a wife and 3 sons. Children of Loving named in 1837 Court Papers in Jackson County, Indiana assigning guardianship to Wendell Poor: Amos Matlock, Richard Matlock and David Matlock. In later papers, Wendell Poor apprentices Amos, son of Loving, deceased, to to John F. Carr "to learn the art, trade and mistery of a Tanner..." until 1846 when Amos will be 21 - this establishes his birth date to be 1825. NOTE: Wendell Poor was married to Elizabeth Weddle, daughter of Daniel and Mary Wallen Weddle and brother to Mary Weddle who married Richard Matlock. When Elizabeth Weddle Poor(e) died, Wendell Poor(e) married her younger sister, Thirza Weddle.

[5] Dorothy Matlock is the daughter of Richard and Mary Weddle Matlock, therefore Johnson and Dorothy were half siblings. Dorothy moved on the Indiana after Johnson died.

[1] Richard Medlock/Matlock served in the Revolutionary War from 1 April 1779 to 1 July 1781. Pension allowed 4 October 1832 in Hawkins County, TN. Records state he had 13 children, other sources say 14...

[2] Children of Dorothy Matlock and Johnson Matlock are: Peter (d. Bef. 1840); Wells (ca. 1830-1911; served on the Union side in the Civil War: Company H, 50th & 52nd Indiana Infantry), Robert Berton (ca. 1833 - d. Civil War: [Confederate] Sixtieth Tennessee Infantry ; March 12, 1863), Jesse (ca. 1835), George R. (1836-1908; served on the Union side in the Civil War: Company C; 3rd Tennessee Cavalry. He entered as a Private and was discharged as a Sergeant), Huston (1839 - d. Civil War: [Confederate] Forty-third Tennessee Infantry ; Rogersville, Jan. 10, 1862), William (1840-1927), Edith (1840-1901), David (1843), Henry (1848-1916). NOTE: two brothers served on each side in the Civil War. Dolly's daughters, Isaphene (ca. 1852), and Tennessee (ca. 1855) were born out of wedlock with Enock Horton (of Hancock County, TN) after Johnson died. Dorothy is enumerated in Hancock County, TN in both 1860 & 1870. In 1870, a child named Drucilla, age 7 , b. TN is enumerated in the household, so apparently, Dorothy had eleven children - no idea who the father of Drucilla was. Family oral history says, Dolly moved on to join other family members in Indiana, where she died and was buried. I assume that must have been between 1870 and 1880 as I cannot find her enumerated in 1880.

[3]Children of Daniel Matlock and Hannah ? are: Louisa (b. abt. 1840-41, TN), Sarah (Sallie Ann) (b. 1843, TN), James (b. abt. 1845-47, TN), George (b. abt. 1848 m. Polly d. 10 Oct. 1930) and Mary  (b. after 1850, TN)

[4] Information on George's son, Joel is found in the Jackson County Genealogical Society Paper, June 1986. Listings of Soldiers in Civil War from Jackson County:

"Joel H. Matlock was born in Jackson County August 17, 1847 and was the fourth child of George and Betsy Weddell Matlock who were natives of Tennessee. In February 1864, Joel Matlock enlisted in Company H. of the One Hundred and Twentieth Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was in the battle of Resaca and was with General Sherman until after the battle of Atlanta. He mustered out with the rank of Orderly Sargeant. On November 5 1868 he married Mary A. Scott. They were the parents of five children: Cora Effie, Mary A., Grace, Price H., and Bessie." Source Gordon Weddle.

... continuing facts about Charles:
4) beginning in 1833, there are documents regarding settlement of the estate of "Charles Matlock deceased" in Jackson County, Indiana. Apparently the estate was finally settled in 1837 - these documents refer to but do not mention the names of Charles' heirs. No mention of Charles wife is made suggesting she also perished. Executors were Samuel W. Tanner & Matthew Tanner who entered into bond with Daniel Peck, Adam Miller, Jonah F. DeBolt and Andrew Gilwick.
5) a wife and nine children are unlikely to disappear off the face of the earth without mention....so what happened??? If you can identify any of the names of these children, please contact me!

[1] William Robert Matlock served in the Civil War as a Union Soldier: Company B; 50th Indiana Infantry (along with Johnson and Dorothy's son George) & Company D; 3 Iowa Cavalry. He entered service as a Private and left as a Corporal. Family stories say that Elizabeth Mariah insisted on following him to the edge of the battlefields where, as an herbalist, she tended the sick until William Robert was released as a result of complications of Asthma.

[2] Sisters Mary Elizabeth and Susan Mulvina married two brothers, Ross and G.W. Harman. Ross may have been a physician, according to family oral history, but must have died early as Mary moved on to Franklin County AR with her parents where she married James W. McKinney (source: Carlyon Sue McKinney, granddaughter of James W. and Mary Elizabeth Matlock McKinney).

[3] Dora and William were married by J.P. J.F.King in Cross lane, Crawford Co., Arkansas. William Allen Fraley was born 20 Apr 1873, Alma, Crawford County, Arkansas; d. 15 Jun 1953, Apache, Caddo County, Oklahoma; buried at the Elgin Cemetary, Elgin, Comachee County, Oklahoma. source: Ron Johnston

All the children except Ella Mae died young with their mother Sarah. They all died the same week. She had two sons by her first husband, Douglas McKinney, and then had about eight to ten more children with her second husband Robert Orlen Matlock. Only two, though, lived to maturity. The rest were born prematurely and all but one of them were stillborn. Two of the children that she lost were fraternal twins. They were a boy and a girl. The little boy was like the rest. He was stillborn. The little girl, who was named Julietta, lived about thirty minutes.
