One of the best known Masons in the province of Quebec passed away at Detroit yesterday in the person of Mr. William Samuel Buckland who spent the prime years of his life in Montreal, where he was a widely known and esteemed citizen.
Mr. Buckland, who was 76 years old, died in Detroit at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. A.C. West. He left Montreal a year ago for California, as he was in failing health, but could go no farther, than Detroit.
Mr. Buckland was born in England and came to Canada in 1888. He immediately entered the service of the Canadian Pacific Railway and remained with the company until a year ago. He was long night superintendant of the old Delormier Shops, and later became an inspector.
Mr. Buckland was widely known in Masonic circles, being the oldest past Master of the Eastern Star Lodge No.74, A.F. and A.M. of which he was senior warden. He was also past Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of Quebec, and a Royal Arch Mason. He was a member of St. Thomas Anglican Church.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Major Rev. A.W. Buckland, of Cookshire, Que., and Mr. Joseph W. Buckland, of Montreal, both of whom are prominent Masons, and three daughters. Mrs. A.C. West, of Detroit; Mrs. F. Bidwell and Mrs. R. Heron, both of Montreal. He was also father of the late Engineer Commander W.F.Buckland, R.N.
Mrs. Buckland, nee Phoebe Willington, predeceased her husband twenty- five years ago.

Son of William Samuel Buckland (2 Oct 1851-9 Nov 1925) and Phoebe Buckland (nee Willington) (Nov 2, 1841-Feb 17, 1899); husband of Maria Morrison (1857?-August 21, 1905), Annie O'Neill (1860-July 13, 1920), and widow Sybil Pollard Smith who married the twice-widowed Rev. Buckland in Montreal on November 19, 1927; father of Sapper Gilbert Victor Buckland (Service No. 1009882) and Gunner A. Alfred William Buckland (Service No.303037).

Padre Buckland joined the 5th Royal Highlanders of Canada (Militia) on Feb 1, 1886 in Montreal and served until January 31, 1896 as their Padre but was paid as a Private and seldom there because he was a Missionary/Minister in the Diocese of Rupert's Land from 1887 until 1896. Padre Buckland was appointed Honorary Captain and Chaplain in the Chaplain Services of the CEF at New Carlisle, Quebec on August 10, 1915. He sailed for Britain on September 4, 1915 and was attached to the 49th Battalion as their Chaplain on 4 Oct 15. Padre Buckland returned to Quebec City in 1918. By 1921 the now Padre (Major)was living in Paspebiac and Cox Township with his 92 year old father William Samuel Buckland and was still a minister until his father died in 1925. (2103)

Padre Buckland suffered during a gas attack in November 1915 and was invalided from France to Britain then Canada for medical care. He was temporarily assigned as Chaplain to the 123rd Battalion, Royal Grenaders, from October 11 to 17, 1916. He returned to duty as the Senior Chaplain of Canadian troops at Shoreham England on 5 Mar 1917. Capt Buckland was appointed temporary Major for this assignment from October 17, 1917 until July 26, 1918. He returned to Canada on August 3, 1918, demobilized at Quebec City and discharged from the service on December 26, 1918. He was reappointed to the active Militia on the reorganization of the Chaplain Services on December 17, 1918. Capt Buckland was attached to the Fusiliers du St Laurent on October 1, 1920 and promoted to Major until May 1, 1927. Padre Alfred Willington Buckland died at his home in Cookshire Quebec on November 29, 1932 and was buried with his second wife Annie O'Neill and son Sapper Gilbert Victor Buckland on Dec 1, 1932 at the Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal, Quebec.
