INDEX

[1233] Gertrude (Mama) Sparling
86, Sydney
Gertrude (Mama) Sparling, 86, of 10 MacPherson Crescent, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Tuesday, April 25, 2000, after a brief stay at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Mary Bridget OToole and William Wall.
She was predeceased by her husband, George in 1989 and her youngest daughter, Darlene, mother of Carl in 1972. Also predeceased by sisters, Veronica, Stella, Anne, Gladys (Toots); brothers, William, Michael and John and daughter-in-law, Pauline (McGillvary) Sparling.
Gertrude is survived by one sister, Mary Coffey, Maryland, USA and brother, Patrick Wall, Sydney. She was considered the eternal friend and great Matriarch of nine surviving children, George (Claire), Roland (Joan), River Bourgeois, Joan (Ronald) Donovan, Orleans, Ont., Colin (Diane), Korena (Ken), John (Mary), Greg (Shirley), Dolores (Steven) Fifield and Carol Ann (Steve).
She will be sadly missed by her 28 grandchildren, who preferred to call her Mama. Also survived by 40 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and God children; her very special friend, Mrs. Catherine McCormick, and daughters-in-law, Jeannette, mother to Rolands children, Sally (MacGillvray) Sparling, mother of Colins children.
Mama had the innate ability to make each one of her grandchildren feel as if he or she was number one and for that they cherished her. Gertrude was very interested in politics and a similar interest was instilled in her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Branch 12, Royal Canadian Legion and was an Honoured Royal Lady of the Elks Lodge.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at St. Josephs Church, Friday, April 28 at 2 p.m. with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
May her great effort on earth, reward her in Heaven.
