Andries Eligh and Willem Eligh were showed as being part of Captain Dubois' Company in 1767 at Catskill, N.Y.

ELIGH
The Eligh family were first recorded on the land assessment rolls of Marlborough township, Carleton county, Ontario in 1839. The name remained on the rolls well into the next century. For many years this name was commonly pronounced 'Ay-lik' by
people in the area where the Elighs lived. Their location in the township was consistently on lot 6 of the Broken Front and concession 1. The Broken Front consists of a narrow, irregular band of land which lies between concession 1 and the Rideau
River. That is, the family occupied a river-front farm. Perhaps because of their location the Elighs were engaged in river transportation for many years. As an illustration, a local news item in the Kemptville Weekly Advance of April 1, 1897: "Luke Depencier is re-engaged for steamer Swift to run between Kingston and Ottawa. Wm. Eligh and John Ault will take their familiar places on the Olive while Wm. Eligh will assist in the management of the Col. By."

On his gravestone in the Beckett's Landing cemetery, only a short distance from the Eligh farm, is inscribed:
"Capt. Peter Eligh, 1870-1942".

As late as the 1920's, produce from the area, eg. cheddar cheese from the local factories, was loaded onto Rideau River freight boats from 'Pete Elich's wharf, which was on the Eligh farm.

The earliest Eligh name on local records was that of Jacob 'Elick', age 49 in 1851/52, born in Upper Canada, and married to Sarah. It was his name which was on the land assessment rolls in 1839, 1840 and 1841, but it is only from the 1851/52 census that the identities of his family group can be first discovered. The assessment rolls from 1842 to 1850 are lost and in 1851 it was Jacob's son, Charles, whose name was on the roll. The Marlborough township map in the Historical Atlas of Carleton County, Ontario, (H. Belden & Co., 1879), shows the farm on the west � of lot 6 on the Broken Front and concession 1, 127 acres in all, in the name of Lemuel Elich. That probably indicates 100 acres in concession 1 and the other 27 acres along the
river on the Broken Front. Lemuel (1828-1898) was another of Jacob's sons. On a township map of 1863, the names on the property were L. Eligh and Wm. Eligh, yet another son.

There is no sign of a gravestone for Jacob. In the Christ Church (Anglican) cemetery at Burritt's Rapids is a stone with this inscription for Sarah, "Our mother. Sarah, wife of Jacob Eligh, died Feb. 22, 1878, aged 68 yrs." Jacob had died before 1861 since in the census of that year, Sarah was recorded as a widow.

The identities of the Elighs of later generations can be learned from the successive censuses. The problem lies in identifying those who preceded Jacob. The L.D.S. International Genealogical Index (IGI) has a Family Group Record for Peter Eligh, (1779-1852) and his wife, Abigail (1789-1816), both of whom were born, married (in 1802) and died in Osnabruck township, Stormont county, Ontario. Six children are listed, all of whom were born in Osnabruck township and four of whom died there.
There is no information about a daughter, Ann, and the sixth, Jacob, was born in 1802, died in Marlborough township and was buried at Burritt's Rapids. On the whole, it is reasonably certain that Jacob's parents were Peter and Abigail. The IGI Individual
Record for Jacob says as much. The Woodlands East (Protestant) cemetery identified in the OCFA as the Pioneer Upper Canada Village cemetery in Williamsburg township, Dundas county, has these gravestone inscriptions on a single stone:
Peter Eligh, died July 11, 1862, age 82 yrs;
his wife, Abigail, died Feb. 6, 1816, age 26;
also, Catherine Eligh, died Nov. 17, 1870, age 82.

Peter's IGI Individual Record records his marriage on September 21, 1802 to Abigail Tupper. Since she died very young, it would be reasonable to assume that Peter married again and the Record reports his second wife as Catherine ------?------, whom he married on July 21, 1820.

As to Peter's ancestors, a Family Group Record of Jacob Eligh (1750-c1830) identifies a son as the Peter Eligh (1779-1852) referred to above. This Jacob was born in Ulster, New York and died in Osnabruck township, Stormont county, Ontario. The
IGI offers no clue to a person in any earlier generation that can be reasonably be regarded as Jacob's father.

Elich, Andreas, age 37, New York(State), is shown in 1710, #6301, p. 563 of the Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, along with Elich, Anna Rosina, age 23, New York (State) and Elich, John George, age 3, New York (State).

Elich, Andreas is also shown as 7820, p. 443 for 1710 traveling by himself.

In 1727, Andres Elich is shown as #9041, p. 12, and 6665, p. 304 as departing from Philadelphia, PLA

Andres Elick was a passenger on the ship "Molly" ; qualified September 30, 1727

Anna Margaretha Frolich was confirmed at the age of 15 years on January 14, 1730 at Andreas Elig's house at Newton.
