OBITUARY: Source and date unknown:
Death of Archibald A. Wylie
The community suffered a severe loss on Friday February 16th by the passing of one of its oldest and most
highly respected citizens, in the person of A.S. Wylie.
Although Mr. Wylie had been ill for practically a year, his death came as a shock to his many friends here, and to
say that the community is greatly impoverished by the loss of such a friend and neighbor is saying little.
The late Archibald Smith Wylie was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on May 13, 1853, and came to this country
when a mere boy, eleven years of age living on the present home with his uncles.
Mr. Wylie was married on June 14, 1882, to Maud Helena Empey, this union being blessed with four children,
three of whom, with his widow are left to mourn his loss. The children are, Mrs. Wm. A. Smirl, Iroquois, Ont, Mrs.
L.W. Young, Baltimore, MD and Lloyd Wylie, at the old home. One son, Sgt. Wm. Ralph Wylie, gave his life on
Sep 9, 1916, in the battle of Courcellette.
Mr. Wylie in religion was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church, having been an elder of St.
Matthew's,
Woodlands, since Dec 8th, 1895 and he was for many years Superintendent of the Sunday School. In politics he
was a liberal.
The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, Feb 19th, from his late residence to St. Mathews Church, the Rev.
Robt. Sinclair officiating. The funeral was under the auspices of Wales Lodge, A.F. & A.M. Interment took place
at upper Woodlands Cemetery.
Friends present from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Wm Smirl, Iroquois; Burton Empey, Montreal, nephew; Mr.
and Mrs. Wm. Dafoe, Aultsville, brother in law and sister in law.
The floral tributes consisted of wreaths from Mr. Herman Empey, Mrs. Murdock and Burton Empey, Montreal;
Mrs. L.W. Young, Baltimore; and a floral emblem from the Masonic Lodge of Wales.
