Robert J. Black was a carriage-maker in Shawville for many years. In 1899 he began selling stoves and in 1912 he embarked in the merchantile business and began selling groceries. Robert and Harriet had 14 children, 2 dying in infancy.

They were buried in St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery, Shawville, Quebec.
