INDEX

[1013] [black-extract.FTW]

In the early census of the area Joseph's occupation was listed as a
farmer in Aldfield Twp. He was the enumerator for the 1891 census for
the Township of Aldfield.
He was the first Post Master at Matin Lake, opening it on November 1,
1889. He performed this service with the help of his wife until his
death in 1895.
After a somewhat lengthened illness, and being in hospital several times,
at just 42 years of age, Joseph passed away. His death left a wife and
nine children, ranging in age from 3 months to 15 years.

Mary Jane was married when she was 17 years of age to a man who was 8
years her senior. She gave birth to their first child when she was 18
and when she was 34, they had their tenth and last child, and three
months later she was a widow.
She became the post mistress after the death of her husband and
except for 6 months - from July 1900 to January 1901, when William
Turcotte was the post master - held the position with the help of her
daughter Viola during the last years, until her death. Viola then became
the post mistress until the post Office was closed in July 1936.
Some things never change. The following was found in the Shawville
Equity, dated June 15, 1899. "The postmaster at Martin Lake, Quebec,
writes us to say that copies of the Equity addressed to that office, do
not reach their destination till the week following publication. We have
only to say that our edition is all mailed here on Wednesday evening of
each week, and should therefore reach the office mentioned within two or
three days, unless the mail connections are defective."
Mary Jane was well known and highly respected through out the area.
She acted as mid wife to many new mothers and was called upon often to
bandage wounds and set broken bones.
After being ill for one year, Mary Jane passed away in her 75th
year, at the home of her daughter, Tessie (Mrs. W. H. Armstrong), in
Ottawa, Ontario.

Shawvill Equity, Thursday, November 7, 1907.
Mr. Edgerton Martin, while on a trip over the height of land for the
Geo. Gordon & Co., with whom he has been employed for the past several
years, made a great discovery of cobalt and silver fully equal to
anything yet discovered in or around Cobalt. We understand from Mr.
Martin that the vein is about two and a half feet wide and can be traced
for about two hundred yards on the surface. The only draw back being the
distance that it is away from the railway, it being about seventy miles
north of Wahnapitea Lake. Mr. Martin also reports that there is
excellent pine as far as he went; he says that it is eqully as good as
anything lying along the C.P.R. and that pulpwood is unlimited.

[1015] [black-extract.FTW]
He was known as Clinton. He worked on dam construction, lumber mills and
in bush camps. He also was a prospector.

Cache Bay News, October 23, 1928.
Clinton and Margaret and son Ivan moved to Toronto, Ontario, and are
living on Clinton Street.

[1016] He never married. He died in 1936 or 1937 in Ottawa.
