INDEX

George was born in Lower Canada to parents of Irish origin and his
religion was listed as Church of England. From the early census reports,
his year of birth is estimated to be about 1840.
The 1871 census states he was a farmer and gives a brief description
of his farming activities. His land was described as Lot 45, Range 5,
Thorne Township, Pontiac Co. Quebec, he owned 100 acres, 40 of which were
cleared or cultivated, the remaining 60 were wild or wood land. The
crops for that year were spring wheat, oats, rye, peas, potatoes and
hay. The animals he had were 4 horses, 5 milk cows, 20 sheep, and 2
pigs. They made 200 pounds of butter that year and sheared 70 pounds of
fleece from the sheep. From the fleece they made 120 yards of home made
cloth or flannel.
In 1870 his one story log home was destroyed by fire.

The early area census state that Elizabeth was born in Canada with Irish
origins. She was 75 years of age and a widow for 24 years, when she
passed away suddenly at the home of her daughter, Viola, Mrs. James
Rooney, of Campbell's Bay, Quebec.
She was buried beside her husband in the church yard of St. George's
Anglican Chuch, Thorne Centre, Quebec.

Mary Jane was married when she was 17 years of age to a man who was 8
years her senior. She gave birth to their first child when she was 18
and when she was 34, they had their tenth and last child, and three
months later she was a widow.
She became the post mistress after the death of her husband and
except for 6 months - from July 1900 to January 1901, when William
Turcotte was the post master - held the position with the help of her
daughter Viola during the last years, until her death. Viola then became
the post mistress until the post Office was closed in July 1936.
Some things never change. The following was found in the Shawville
Equity, dated June 15, 1899. "The postmaster at Martin Lake, Quebec,
writes us to say that copies of the Equity addressed to that office, do
not reach their destination till the week following publication. We have
only to say that our edition is all mailed here on Wednesday evening of
each week, and should therefore reach the office mentioned within two or
three days, unless the mail connections are defective."
Mary Jane was well known and highly respected through out the area.
She acted as mid wife to many new mothers and was called upon often to
bandage wounds and set broken bones.
After being ill for one year, Mary Jane passed away in her 75th
year, at the home of her daughter, Tessie (Mrs. W. H. Armstrong), in
Ottawa, Ontario.

Elizabeth married Thomas in Clarendon Twp. It is not known yet if Thomas
was related to Joseph Martin husband of Mary Jane. The odds are pretty
good that they probably were close relatives.
Elizabeth and her husband are both buried in Union Cemetery,
Sturgeon Falls, Ontario.

[751] Sarah and Samuel are both buried in the cemetery of the beautiful stone church, St. George's Anglican, Thorne Centre, Quebec (near Ladysmith).
