Obituary - Traverse City Record-Eagle January 10, 2002
PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Ward Sparling, age 93, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Kingsley, passed away on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 6, 2002.
Ward was born on Sept. 15, 1908, in Kingsley, the son of Arthur and Maude (Davenport) Sparling. He graduated from Kingsley High School in 1927, and attended Davenport Institute in Grand Rapids.
He served in the U.S. Army from February 1942 to August 1945, performing duties in air mechanics and field artillery.
Ward returned to the Kingsley area with his wife, Gertrude (Laarman) where they farmed for many years. Ward attended the Methodist Church in Kingsley for many years and later joined the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City. He was a commander of the local American Legion Post, and a member of the Kingsley School Board for 14 years. Ward retired as a building contractor from the Farm Bureau in Traverse City in 1971. After retirement, Ward and his wife moved to Punta Gorda, Fla. Ward resided there for the past 30 years.
Ward is survived by his daughter, Linda Beebe of Wilcox, Ariz.; his brother, Kenneth (Beulah) Sparling of Florida; two grandchildren, Jeff Beebe of Traverse City and Jenny Beebe of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two nieces and a nephew.
Ward was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude in 1993, two sisters, Marian and Lucille Bourgois; and a brother, Russell.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 11, at Kays-Ponger Funeral Home in Punta Gorda, Fla., with the Rev. Larry Pope officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in Royal Palms Cemetery in Punta Gorda, Fla.
