Herbert Gilpin Sparling
A prominent barrister of Battleford is Herbert Gilpin Sparling, a member of the firm of Sparling & Mighton. He was born at St. Mary's, Ontario, on the 27th of September, 1878, a son of Robert W. and Martha (Gilpin) Sparling, the former a native of Tipperary, Ireland, and the latter of County Armagh. Robert W. Sparling came to Canada with his parents in 1843, when three years of age. On reaching manhood he engaged in farming and followed that line of work in Perth county for the remainder of his life. His death occurred in December, 1902, when sixty-two years of age. Mrs. Sparling survives him and is residing in St.Mary's, at the age of eighty-four years.
Herbert Gilpin Sparling spent his boyhood in St. Mary's and there received his education. He taught school in the Northwest Territories, Edmonton district, for three years and in 1898 came west. Subsequently he entered the University of Manitoba, and was graduated therefrom with the B. A. degree in 1906. He immediately came to Battleford and commenced the study of law in the office of R.R. Earle. He was called to the bar in 1910 and then opened an office in Grenfell, where he practiced on his own account for two years. He then returned to Battleford and formed a partnership with R. R. Earle and that association was maintained until 1917, when Mr. Earle withdrew from the firm and went to the coast to make his home. Mr. Sparling then practiced independently until 1921, when he took S. M. Mighton into partnership with him. They have since practiced as Sparling & Mighton and enjoy an extensive and important clientele, handling much important litigation before the courts.
Mr. Sparling is well versed in his profession and stands high at the district and provincial bars. He owns considerable farm land in this district.
On the 11th of May, 1910, Mr. Sparling was married to Miss Blanche Kenny, and to them two children have been born : Ruth Yvonne, whose birth occurred on the 29th of April, 1911 ; and Helen Louise, born on the 15th of February, 1914. Politically Mr. Sparling is a Liberal and he maintains an active interest in party affairs, although he has never sought nor desired political preferment. He is a member of the high school board and was formerly on the public school board. Along strictly professional lines he is identified with the Saskatchewan Bar Association and the Battleford Bar Association and he is a member of the Masons and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Socially he is identified with the Canadian Club, the Battleford Golf Club and the local Curling Club. Mr.Sparling is a consistent member of the Methodist church.
